Dave Hoff Raw Total

How fast do you think they’d go if they were in bare feet or socks? I’ve never really skated, but I’m trying to figure out how fast I actually am compared to them in reality, you know, without equipment. [/quote]

Omgâ?¦ This really does sum up the entire raw vs. gear argument, thank you XD

Not even a little bit. If there were raw guys trying to get rid of barbells or something, then yeah. But the original state of powerlifting was raw. It would be more like if some speed skaters started strapping rockets to their asses and skating 100 MPH while claiming guys without rockets “couldn’t even stand up under that wind speed”.

It is a different sport. Do high jumpers sit around wondering how high pole vaulters could get over the bar without the pole? If they do, they are silly, because getting the most out of the pole is part of the sport of pole vaulting.

I agree, but pole vaulters don’t claim to high jump.

Do geared lifters claim to lift raw?

If so, I agree with you, that’s pretty dishonest.

One of my sports is diving. You can do a lot more from less height with a springboard compared to a tower.

Same basic movement pattens, but the events are different and the difference is the equipment they use. Part of the sport is getting the most out of the equipment you are allowed to use compared to your competitors in each event.

They use the same name for the sport and the same name for the lifts they claim numbers in. (holding with the pole vaulter scenario)

Absolutely true, but that is why I focused more on the question of if they claimed it was raw or not. In powerlifting, since we have the issues you mentioned, I feel that it becomes incredibly important to make the distinction between raw and geared when talking about numbers, since there is overlap otherwise.

It’s the perspective being claimed here in my opinion. That there are two different sports, raw powerlifting and geared powerlifting. They are both called “powerlifting”, and then within that sport name the deviations occur. Hence why it would be dishonest for a geared lifter to claim raw lifts.

By far the best comparison made yet. Different strokes in swimming I think would be a equally accurate comparison.

Edit: Actually not quite, with the diving, the equipment is the aiding factor so yeah, that’s the best comparison.

yes and no… There have always been guys doing whatever it took to total higher. Guys back then wrapped their knees in ace bandages and wore super small reinforced levis that acted like a squat suit of sorts. This notion of old school “purity” is a false notion if one really looks back.

hey, lets all go troll the STRONGMAN section saying that their 18" deadlifts suck cause they are high and that
“tacky” stuff is cheating because real men pick up 300# rocks RAWWWWER!!! lol

Hoff claims the largest powerlifting total ever. I disagree. When you just mention total or lift numbers without mentioning you strapped a spring on your ass, it’s dishonest.

Guys like ed coan and fred hatfield think differently.

We will have to agree to disagree.

I could beat him, if we used my total in 3 lifts versus 1 of his lifts.

Eh, I’m biased. I think geared lifting is silly, plus I just plain don’t like Hoff. He’s a cheater with no integrity that I might let shadow my opinion of geared lifting a bit.

Raw lifting is like saying corn on the cob. Corn on the cob is really just corn, logically other varieties of corn should be corn off the cob. Hoff has the highest geared total ever, but that really doesn’t mean much to me and the mention requires the note of gear.

I could beat him…

With a 2x4…

If he had his back turned…

maybe…

I feel that raw lifting does a very sufficient job of clarifying when/if they are raw that, whenever I see someone mention powerlifting without the raw clarification, I simply assume it is geared.

Sure, it may confuse non-powerlifters, but I can’t imagine there are a whole lot of those people that even care about powerlifting enough for it to matter.

Oddly enough, I have never seen any complaints about the use of squat and deadlift suits in strongman. I honestly bought my first deadlift suit because of strongman, and have no intentions to use it in a powerlifting meet. It’s honestly pretty interesting to see the different mentalities. Something my wife commented on at my last strongman competition was something to the effect of

“I’m glad you started with powerlifting before you got into strongman. If you did it the other way around, I would think everyone was so stupid for worrying about how thick your belt was and the heel height of your shoe, but from this perspective, it just makes strongman seem even more awesome.”

I prefer to use high powered long range weapons on animals.
