Damaged Knee, Can't Run/Lift

i hurt my knee a little over a year ago playin basketball. it didn’t hurt that bad but it’s been popping ever since. i went to the doctor and he couldn’t see any reason why it would be in pain or popping or anything.

so about a month after it happened i could run again and i went on like it was fine, because it felt fine and the doctor said it was fine. so a few days ago i was at the gym and tried to run and it popped a lot so after like a minute of trying to run i stopped cause i didn’t wanna mess anything up worse and i was in a lot of pain.

it pops anytime i bend it at all and squatting or anything would be hell. is there any way i can try and fix this??? any work outs to maybe strengthen some muscles in my knee to make whatever tendon or ligament or something in my knee have less stress on it??

I was actually about to post my own knee problem and ask for some advice.

I had knee surgury back in Feb, and I havn’t been able to run since. It was a minor partial meniscectomy, no big deal. I find it very painful to run or lift with it.

Now I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “popping,” not my knee will pop occasionally like if you were to crack your knuckle, but that doesn’t cause it to hurt. Prior to my surgury and tearing my meniscus I guess it had always had a slight tear in it, so what would happen was what the doctor described as “locking.” I described this “locking” as “popping,” in that it felt like my knee might be dislocating and I wouldn’t be able to move it. Is that what you mean?

I’m not a doc. so take this all with a grain of salt. If I were you, and it was causing you a lot of discomfort, it may be worth getting a MRI to see exactly what’s going on inside your knee.

Since I’ve been trying to lift, I’ve noticed that deadlifts feel better on my knee than squats. Maybe give those a shot and see if it works better for you.

Hope this was some help.

To the OP, what type of popping is it? Does something seem to slide over the side of your kneecap?

I’ve found there are a lot of people I know that have patellar tracking problems. There’s a couple suggestions in articles here. The way I had dealt with it before was to do short arc leg extensions (toes pointed out).

I know people might disagree with it, but it worked in my case, if that’s your problem. Is there a localized pain anywhere? More description will definitely help.

My does the same thing pretty much, it kind of pops out of place when twisting pressure is applied. It’s only happened once when I was squatting and rarely throughout the day. There is no pain the injury is around 5 years old. Well I went to an orthopedist and he says that there’s a meniscal tear so I’m getting surgery in November.

no i don’t think anything is sliding around or over my knee cap (i hope) it just pops kinda like a knuckle and i know thats not really rare for some people but if it pops a few times it’ll really start to hurt and if i’m bending at all i stand straight up and try and get it to where it wants to be.

but it’s not just at the gym anymore. at first it was. now it’s like getting up from chairs at school or walking up/down stairs if i bend it enough. sounds to me like a lot of people have messed up knees like myself haha but i’d like mine ta go away cause it hurts thanks for all the advice so far…

Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. It’s affecting your running, it’s persistent. I’d have it checked out again.
