There’s a guy at my gym who does a lot of crossfit exercises on the Power Rack. Him and I have developed an understanding. We respect each other’s workout and we are able to share if need be. Besides, nobody else uses the power rack accept those clowns who think it’s a place to do curls…we all know the story and the many threads.
Today, this clown disregards my gym bag as I was gone for 10 min for a bathroom break; band box squats killed me and it was the first time I threw up after doing box squats. Normally I go on a semi-empty stomach but the hunger pains got the best of me; NEVER AGAIN!!! So, when I return, this clown has his crossfit tee-shirt on and starts setting up the olmpic bands (don’t know official name) and then states he was here first. Clearly you can see my bag is there, but nonetheless, I ask can we work together. He states that he has 10mins of whatever he’s doing and that we can’t work together.
I was heated! I had one last set of ME 3/4 or high box squats to do and I only had 3 sets left. This turned into a pissing contest and then he goes in tells gym personnel who instructs me that I have to abide and wait my turn; I guess Rank has its privileges as he was a pilot in training at my base. What a crock!!!
Since this is the only power rack in the gym, I had to wait my 15 mins, and by that time my legs were soo tight and degraded, that I missed my last ME exercise.
This crossfit has become a popular surge on my base. I have nothing against the Crossfit people. I’ve even met and talked with Mark Rippetoe. He has a gym down here in Wichita Falls Texas. And his gym is old fashion, powerlifter’s dream and olympic lifter’s dream. I just can’t see paying for a membership when I get to go to a gym for free.
Has anyone else had any problems with the Crossfit folks when utilizing the Power Rack?
I don’t know if they’re crossfitters, but if I had a dollar for everytime I had to sit through high rep sets of 55lb pound terrible looking so-called “power cleans” in front of the squat rack, then I would be a rich man.
No haven’t had a real problem with them here…maybe because you abandoned the rack for 10 min, he felt he could use it. Don’t blame him. I like a strength emphasis but - the top C’Fitters who actually use appreciable weight in circuit training, are beasts. I know because I’ve done their w/o’s. It’s all about adaptation and systemic endurance is my own weak spot; I can appreciate the CF trend. IF it’s done w/decent resistance.
To bad you couldn’t light up a few good farts in the area.
Any how I’ve seen pricks like this that jack your station when you go to take a piss. It’s not just crossfit people but all sort of other foreskins out there that are just straight pricks.
Your story is funny because a few weeks ago i was setting up my rings on a goliath rack [there are 3 racks and i was the only person in the whole gym at the time] and getting my shoulder work and some other ring lifts on when some “cool dudes” roll up.
They thought the muscle ups i was doing looked pretty easy and so they asked if they could try. Guy couldnt even do it when he jumped off the floor. then he redeemed himslef by saying “oh that’s not a real strength exercise anyways.” to which i say “really? what is?” and he goes… get ready for it:
“squats. I rock at squats.”
Im thinking “you squat?” but i say “alright lets do some squats then.”
tuns out he doesnt actually “squat” but instead he half squats. I admire the bravado of these young uni fellas and his friends were great cheerleaders but I still out full front squatted their half back squats that fateful day. At least they didnt get all shity and were good sports. their names were timmy and something else and the fat one.
Anyhow moral of the story is that you should eat a half bag of apples and go find your crossfit friend and gas him out. I doubt it’s crossfit that makes him a cunt but the crossfit sure does seem to amplify the cuntery in many folks.
I’ve had run ins w/ some. The worst was the kids who thought they owned the weight room for doing crossfit. The one made a big scene like he was going to puke, and drug a garbage can under the pulley station/pullup bar. He finished and just left it there. He was doing fran, which is pullups and thrusters, and a good conditioning workout but it took them about 15 minutes and their thrusters were half assed. I watched the workout and he plain and simple didn’t push hard enough to puke or even feel naseous, but I guess he liked to think he was pushing himself that hard.
Another one was doing deadlifts and burpees in the power rack. I asked him if he minded moving so I could squat, and he obliged, but said w/ a scumbag inflection that I should have asked him before he started. He was nice enough to move, but I still wanted to punch him in the face.
I can’t complain though, as I rarely have to deal w/ anyone in the squat rack but me.
This was at WPAFB in OH too, and I don’t see as many crossfitters as you would think.

Nice one Avocado!
I think the guy was/is a prick because he’s a pilot, not because of crossfit. Pilot’s usually make passengers sit in the back seat, cause their ego’s ride shotgun. Not all pilot’s are douche bags, but there sure seems to be a lot of them stricken with the disease.

I’m all about sharing the power rack when it comes to doing some powerful exercise. However, this clown was just using the bands rings (whatever their called). Even if he was doing circuits, I would’ve got my sets in between his circuits and held the power rack down for him. In addition, all we was doing was pulling his own body weight. Now, I have to say, I couldn’t done what he was doing for 10 min straight, but if that is all he had planned, he could’ve went outside to the jungle gym and done the same exercise instead of using the power rack for a pullup exercise on steroids just to show everyone his new toy!
By the way, I agree with some of the CF being beast. Those overhead squats are brutal and I have even incorporated those in my workouts every 5th week as a mini-deload. I have yet to do bodyweight, but I’m up to a staggering 185Lbs and I mean my body is wobbling to keep stable.
I was in the army for three years and I really miss lifting on base. Besides the few cocky 2nd LT’s who thought their shit didn’t stink, most folks were willing to work together on stations and even help spot each other. This is how I learned to lift in the first place; from a couple of NCO’s who were bodybuilders willing to help out a skinny 165 pounder learn the ropes. When I got to college I found out how different it is. None of that brotherhood here man. That sucks you found “that guy” on base though. You would think that all hard core gym folks, whether powerlifters or crossfitters, would share the love of lifting, but it doesn’t seem that way most of the time.
Anyways, getting to your question: I face off with these crossfit turds every other day it seems. Pair of guys, look like they get manicures together, hold hands and go skipping in the park. Even tried to be nice, offer to let them work in (especially since I am taking long breaks on heavy days) but to no avail. Hate to stereotype crossfitters, but seems like it’s always them acting like they are the TRUTH when it comes to lifting.
My gym also has only 1 power rack. A couple were using it to do 60lb overhead squats, followed by stair climbs and runs around the track. They used the rack for about 45 minutes, for 60 friggin lbs! Then they got pissed off at 3 different people for taking the power rack while they were upstairs running.
I did crossfit for awhile last summer as a change up to my normal routine. It is difficult to do in a gym. But, I always tried to go off into a corner and adapt my workout as to not interfere with others in the gym. (Maybe that’s beacuse I hate waiting for someone to finish curling in the rack).

AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Sorry. I wanted to make sure no one missed that little gem.[/quote]
I’ll be here all week… send money.
There is no shortage of humor where crossfit is concerned. Some are monster clowns [which is ironically their mascot] but some are strong athletes and great coaches and some of my best mates.
It seems like it’s the lone labia types that train the WOD by themselves in a commercial gym that are the real assholes. I’ve never found anything but coolness at a proper CF gym or with a group of CFers [or at least 80% cool with 1 or 2 “tough” guys]. But you gotta watch out for the han solo poofs down at golds who leave the treadmills on sprint and their shit all over the power rack when they take it from the floor any how.
The thing is to learn up about all their little principles and then you can counter them with their own logic. Like with the bible and evangelicals.
he coulda let the OP at least work in though. My bet is that he was doing muscle up for time and there was some pretty good opportunities for the OP to squat. but i wasnt there so i dont know.

Typically most CF exercises are “for time” so it doesn’t really lend itself to having people work in.
I’m not endorsing the use of Crossfit, but I think if you leave a rack for 10 minutes, your “right” to use it pretty much leaves with you.

I’m cool with the fact that if I’m gone for a period of time, I lose my right. The irritating part of all this is how we starting crying, told on me, and then used the only power rack in the gym to do an exercise he could have done outside. The weather was nice that day and he could have went to our mile long track that has the jungle gym and do his stuff there.
Guess I am a biased on the use of the power rack. If you use the rack, do some work with the weights. Don’t use it to do pullups with the Olympic bands.

yeah I reckon if it where for time then there might not be an opportunity. But often they go a run a bunch and switch out. I once worked in when they were at other stations or up on the track.
I do think he could have gone outside if that were just the same.
