Cringiest Youtube Lifter I Have Ever Seen

This part was cleverly written enough that I thought he was being sarcastic, and it was hilarious when you read it as a critique of the Rippetoe-as-alpha-and-omega attitude seen in the Starting Strength forums.

Was I wrong?

I seriously don’t know lol. Nowadays I’ve accepted that anything is possible in Internetland.

Thanks!

Cringiest haha. Man no kidding

I think my favorite part was him saying perfect form=muscle and the “if you were 100 pounds soaking wet and squatted 1000 pounds above parallel I’d still call No Lift” What a jabroni

Bruh the part about bones and ligaments doing the work instead of the muscles if your form didn’t pass the “Rippetoe’s test” is the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard.

Cool. Sorry. Ok i’ll re-post it. But, I wasn’t a fan of it when I saw it. So I deleted it. Before I post it, i’ll just preface it with the fact that “the good part of me” doesn’t support it & would rather avoid posts like that in the future. If you see posts withdrawn from me, you can pretty much assume a similar situation. Sometimes posts like this “somehow” slip through & i’ll delete them. I’ve implemented more efficient firewall rules in my brain to prevent such thoughts from “slipping out into text”, but there are always cracks that an adversary can leverage. Sorry.

Post that was withdrawn:

This guy gives DieselWiesel a run for his money. Should just call him “Wiesel”.
Let’s see:

  • absolute crap squat form
  • my daughter weighs 154 lb, eat something
  • outfit is just ridiculous
  • plates under heels?! what are you broke or something? go buy some adistar squat shoes you bum.
  • at second glance, are those track flats you’re wearing? WTF?
  • hitting pins above parallel
  • yelling like an idiot at a 24 hour fitness
  • lifting in a 24 hour fitness
  • yells “ez work” into the camera at the end
  • looks like a trashier version of Mike Miller
  • in the second video it looks like he puts towels on the damn pins so to not wake his neighbors or something, are you kidding?
  • having the audacity to video tape such trash & post it to youtube.

“Squatting” that many reps is stupid anyway. Man up and add some weight to the bar. All this high rep squatting bull shit. If you can do more than 10 reps it’s too damn light, anyone with CSCS credentials, an exercise science degree, or even a personal trainer cert understands this.

Edit: I got derailed critiquing the garbage above. What I forgot to say was, I completely agree with the OP. What’s the point of lifting barbells if it doesn’t pass a Mark Rippetoe form check inspection? You could literally be 100 lb soaking wet, squatting 1000 lb above parallel, and i’d say “No Lift”. And so would Rippetoe and anyone who has passed an online form check certification. What people don’t understand is, the muscles don’t actually work properly if form is not 100% correct according to a Rippetoe form check. That’s the thing these neophytes just can’t grasp. Sure you’re lifting a barbell, but are your muscles actually lifting it? No. Without proper form, it’s mostly bone and lever adjusting. Muscle doesn’t properly contribute, as verified by several EMG studies that one can easily look up on google scholar. Remember, perfect form = muscle, anything less than perfect form = bone & lever magic. This really shouldn’t be so hard to understand but the game is just infected with people who would rather “ego-lift” than lift correctly and get three green lights by Mark Rippetoe. Disgraceful.

peace

I completely agree about the bones & ligaments part of your statement, that’s asinine. However, why did you also include the “Rippetoe Test” in there?

If you want three green lights on the internet, it has to look exactly like this:

Curious, do you have a protractor application on your phone? If not, try “Smart Protractor” from Smart Tools Co. That’s the protractor I use when watching squat videos on the internet, or watching people squat in the gym etc. I actually have another custom application I built which gives a “green” or “red” light if the angles don’t match up. People I use it on often thank me for flagging them, as long as I teach them the correct way to squat and I also hand them an abbreviated version of starting strength, a pamphlet if you will. Some people react quite strongly at times but i’m just trying to do god’s work.

There’s this one fella who ignored me for years so I basically printed one of these out and put it on his bumper (Ford 2016 F-150 Raptor). The weird thing about it is, shortly after - he started to improve his form. I chalk that up as a W. Several months later, after his form remained perfect for at least 4 weeks, I removed the decal.

Thank you

@adarqui the 1st video of those half squats really arnt that bad. Unless he was trying to pass them off as full squats or powerlifting parallel squats, I can see them being useful. He has his heels chocked to emphasise the quads and is using high reps which is pretty common knowledge that they grow quads quite well.

Now I don’t know this youtuber and I would probably dislike him if I tried, but mocking things like his clothes and saying “easy work” is pretty petty. I can see why you deleted your response.

Cool thanks for your analysis. FWIW, i’ll take some of your points and run them by some of my friends in the Starting Strength Church. I’m sure they will disagree vehemently. Even though they are correct (99%) far more often than not (1%), there is a remote chance that what this individual is doing yields some kind of benefit or in fact he competes in some kind of high rep above parallel squat competition. I don’t see any briefs, oly shoes, or knee wraps so my analysis lends me to believe that he’s just ego lifting - though I am admittedly not certain.

And yes, I felt petty once I saw the post. For a moment, I felt like one of those “insecure cool kids” who loves to gang up on others. It felt sickening, and to be honest i’m completely ashamed of that post. I’ve reposted it only because of popular demand and to let the record show that we are all capable of mistakes. FWIW, I actually often wear high socks & a beanie as well.

In case the person in those squat videos ever sees this thread: I would like to apologize for the words in my post. Though some found it funny, it doesn’t represent my true character. Hopefully, if you read this, you will accept my apology & we will be on good terms. If you ever feel the need to reach out, just send me a direct message on T-Nation or Youtube.

My deepest regrets. I wish you all the best in your training.

@adarqui respect your opinion but i can’t agree with you when it comes to what you say about only perfect form being capable of properly working (and by extension growing) the muscle. I don’t have any science to back that up, just experience and observation. Others like @BrickHead with vastly superior knowledge to my own may be able to chime in…

edit - I try to use good form all the time, by the way, but at the end of a set I’ll occasionally grind out a rep or two with less than stellar form.

I don’t know, this squat seems unsustainable. His knees were so far forward and his already elevated heels were moving up as he descended I can’t imagine the pressure on his knees, and I can’t picture him reaching parralel like that. But maybe it’s juste me and my bad knees being too cautious

Crom laughs at your notions of good form.

Of course his knees were forward, he had chocks under his heels…

I’m not saying his form was good for a full squat, I’m saying that there may be a perfectly good reason he was doing his high rep partials.

LMAO that was fukin priceless :joy: most gym rats would throw their back out just watching that

I’d say that it’s all the core work I’ve done that keeps my back healthy. Like this.
