Recently I have been looking into supplementing with creatine. However, I have a kidney disorder known as Thin Basement Membrane Disease. From what my doc has told me, the disease is generally benign and does not progress into anything threatening, with the symptoms being trace amounts of blood and sometimes protein in my urine.
When researching the subject, I was only able to find information on creatine use in people without pre-existing kidney conditions. So my question is, is creatine supplementation with a condition such as mine safe? Any feedback is much appreciated.

Here’s some advice: Don’t ask questions regarding a serious medical condition on an Internet forum. If I wrote, “I’m a doctor. You should be okay,” would you follow my advice? If so, then you are a total *******.
My doctor has told me that she didn’t recommend it. But doctors also say that high protein diets are bad for your kidneys. What I was hoping for was a response from someone that was qualified to answer or someone who has or knows someone who has my condition and has experimented with creatine.

Actually, doctors say that proteins are bad for people with pre-existing kidney disease.
There is no such evidence for people without pre-existing kidney disease.
If there are no studies on the topic, nobody is probably sufficiently qualified to answer you…unless you find a nephrologist with a large bodybuilder clientel.
usually studies pertaining to creatine’s safety mention that it is safe for people with healthy kidneys. while this doesn’t specifically suggest that creatine is bad for people with poor kidney function, it definately raises a flag. if a researcher or company needs to cover his ass with disclaimers, there is probably something to consider, even if he isn’t specifically addressing an issue in an attempt to play risk down.
as many have already said, just ask your doctor. but you most likely know that would be the logical thing to do already.
i’m going out on a limb here, but would assume you know you shouldn’t take creatine, you know your doctor will affirm that thought and you want to find an OK from some one, so you have turned to a body building forum hoping to find an excuse.
people act funny about supplements. everybody wants that extra boost and many will justify poor logic concerning health issues to chase the “fountain of youth”. creatine won’t make you superman, but it could potentially kill you if it shuts your kidneys down. don’t take it for now and discuss the issue with your doctor.

CaliforniaLaw and I have not always seen eye to eye, but this statement should be copied and pasted into every one of these threads started by people who essentially are asking for the practice of medicine over the internet.
It’s foolhardy and if taken seriously, like he says, potentially dangerous.
