I’m new here. I have worked out at various levels of intensity over the last 30 years. I’m 51 and thinking of making a serious effort to get in great shape and get stronger. I’ve read about creatine but wanted an opinion on the pluses and minuses any health risks associated with the use thereof. And as with any products sold at nutrition stores there seems to be cost & quality differences. Any recommendations on the best products to go with? Thanks!
Plain creatine monohydrate is all you need. Look for the “creapure” stamp on the bottle. As for associated health risks with creatine, there are more health risks associated with driving to work every day. Creatine is pretty safe.
Creatine is the most widely studied supplement in nutritional science and has been a focus of scrutiny for over 20 years now. Harmful effects have never been demonstrated and new positive benefits are being regularly discovered (including an anti-myostatin effect just a few years ago).
Some anecdotal evidence suggests a possible increase in muscle cramping/dehydration, it’s not something that I’ve ever experienced but increasing your water intake is a general recommendation across the board.

Serious effort starts with a plan, plans start with research. Research starts by typing what you want to know about in to a search bar like the one in the upper right hand corner.
Esp. if the topic is this general.
Thanks everybody except the guy who sounds like he’s preaching to me. I think posting a question here qualifies as part of my research. If you have anything of value to offer on the topic like possibly a personal experience that would be appreciated.
Most containers warn against taking it if you have any preexisting renal disease.
I do wonder about whether taking it is just associated with elevated serum creatinine (the breakdown product of creatine), creatinine being one of two markers used to detect renal pathologies.
Everyone here is a liar. Creatine is a dangerous steroid that causes instant death upon a 1mg dosage.
Sweet jesus don’t you people watch the news!!

Interesting that you point this out as I do believe creatine tends to have this effect on me. Since I’ve dropped it from my workout drink I notice I’m not cramping up after lower body workouts anymore.

Pfft. Most of the bad effects can be avoided if you bake it before snorting it. Dilute it in tears for best results.

Oh please. There’s little room for sensitive/butthurt here on the interwebz, and a simple “creatine” search absolutely would have answered your questions and more.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for the day.
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
(substitute ‘search’ for ‘fish’ in this case)
creatine… really people, it’s creatine, at this point that’s like asking if water is bad for you. Seriously, asking this type of question you would be best off investing some money in a personal trainer (oen that knows their stuff), that or spend your time reading all you can for the next year, whichever way is more economical for you.

Good stuff! To bad we can’t get a handle on this dangerous epidemic!
