Cracked Ribs

Okay. I just started a new job and my insurance doesn’t kick in for another month, so I’d like to avoid going to the doctor unless I need to.

Anyway, there’s a place on my ribs on the right side of my body that has been sore for about five days now. In addition to being sore, if I lay on that size or sneeze or cough hard, it feels like I’m being stabbed in the side.

I looked it up on WebMD and it said that it could either be a bruise, a strained muscle, or cracked ribs.

I haven’t been to MMA class in almost a week because of it. I don’t want to miss out on more training, but I also don’t want to worsen the problem if it’s serious.

Has anyone ever cracked a rib? What it’s like? Does that sound like what I did? What should I do for it?

I did take a few kicks in the ribs and got slammed pretty hard in class, but my ribs didn’t hurt until about three days after that. Which really adds to my confusion.

It doesn’t hurt to breathe, ro walk around. There’s no pian if I lie on my back. Lying on either side hurts, and any impact (even running) hurts.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like a cracked rib.

Breathing in deep doesn’t hurt?

I don’t think the doctor will really be able to do anything if your ribs are broken. He’ll probably just tell you to avoid activity that could strain it. It’s right up there on the list of pointless doctor’s visits, right along with the broken toe.

I got gut wrenched bad in wrestling a year ago and tore some cartilage. Wrestled through it, but it hurt like a fucker. I made the mistake of going to the doctor, and it was a huge waste of time. Waited forever in the waiting room, eventually did an X-ray and was told to “take it easy.”

Damn injury took a couple of months to heal fully, probably because I didn’t stop going to wrestling practice.

Hurt ribs suck bad. There’s not a whole lot you can do to make it better, it takes forever to heal, and it hurts real bad. Props to Steve Yzerman for playing with a torn rib muscle in the 2006 NHL playoffs. I’m sure he had some wicked painkillers, though.

Do feel like your gonna either die or piss your pants when you sneeze or cough? If not, you probably don’t have a cracked rib.In a younger day, I took a huge kick to the ribs in a fight. A broken rib hurts like all get out.

Deep breaths don’t bother me. Coughing hurts pretty bad, but sneezing literally feels like I’m being stabbed with a butcher knife… which is real fun, cause I also have a sinus infection right now.

So, I guess whether it’s cracked or not, I should just skip the doctor, huh?

Should I wrap my ribs? Ice it? What’s a good way to alleviate the pain and accelerate healing?

I’m new here, but thought I’d chime in since I cracked two ribs a few months back. Took a hit to the side and cracked the ribs and was an idiot and kept going. Later on took another hit and sprained by back. Of the two, the cracked ribs hurt less but took longer to heal. Took about 2 months total to come back without pain.

You don’t wrap ribs any more. From what I hear it’s easier to heal from a cracked rib than a bruised one. Ice didn’t really work for me and I took just enough painkillers to be able to function without screaming in pain. I was off prescription painkillers after about 3 days and doing over the counter stuff for probably another 3.

The main thing that helped me was excellent posture (and some kickass drugs for the first coupla days). If you know you’re going to cough or sneeze, try pressing on the area, not too hard just enough to support it. I also slept in a recliner for a week or so, but I was told to to whatever hurt less.

Remember I’m not a doc and this is just my experience. Hope it helps and that you heal quickly.

Probably not cracked. Bruised is more likely.

Or you could have bruised the small muscles between the ribs. This can also be very painfull.

Don’t do anything that makes it worse. There, I’ve said it. It’s about as helpfull as useless doctors advice, but hey, it’s free right?
