OK, I’m trying to add cottage cheese to my diet. I’m not sure if I can stomach it plain. I tried about a half pound the other day and had to hold my breath. Now I understand that some people make shakes with it…but how? Say I have 8 oz. of cottage cheese, some chocolate protein powder, and milk…would 8 oz. of milk be enough to throw in my milkshake machine with the cottage cheese & protein powder? Or would that be disgusting? I’m just curious as to what recipes you guys use.
Also, if I’m looking for an occasional alternative to cottage cheese, what could I use?
I actually like the taste of cottage cheese(I know, I’m insane)but I absolutely cannot stomach it in shakes. I made the choco-peanut butter shake from PN the other day and could barely choke it down. Plain, I could eat the whole container, but mix it with anything and…gag.
I really like that PN recipe of cottage cheese + choc. Metabolic Drive + natty PB + flax. Its pretty dessert-like. If you need the carbs, I also like mixing some blackberries and splenda in the cottage cheese.
I love to take frozen peaches and heat them in the microwave till they are pratically bubbling, then mix with some Splenda (if the fruit needs it) & Cinnamon then top with the cottage cheese also mixed with a bit of Splenda. The hot fruit makes the CC “melt” a bit and for me it is a healthy meal that feels like a cheat.

I do the same thing with various frozen fruits and berries but I add Metabolic Drive (esp. the banana cream flavor) instead of Splenda. Mix and mash everything together and it tastes like the filling for a cheesecake.

does it smooth out or do the curds stay in the shake? If I’m chugging this thing and it’s all chunky I think I’d vomit. [/quote]
It smooths out as long as you blend it enough. It tastes like a milk shake.

I’m with analog kid on this one. I love cottage cheese, have so since I was a youngster.
Fresh berries or a little ground cinnamon always does the trick for my daughter. She won’t eat it plain.

Blend the CC and liquid for a while before you put the powder in. Once the powder is in it thickens pretty fast. I had the same problem putting ground flax in my shakes - reminded me of sand.
Heh, I always enjoyed cottage cheese, and yet I always thought it was GROSS before I tried it. Anyway, try the whipped version, thats the one I started out with; it’s not chunky and I know some people get turned off by chunkiness in food. Also, I recommend Friendship brand, the 2% Probiotics kind, it has 3g fiber per serving, and like 2g carbs. I wouldn’t have any other brand besides Friendship, thats maybe why you don’t enjoy it.
I’ve actually never added cottage cheese in my shakes, but I think I might start. Adding cinnamon to cottage cheese makes it taste pretty good even though I enjoy it plain (with flax seeds too), but I’ve added black pepper, splenda, etc. to spice it up a bit.
Any low-carb shake recipes with cottage cheese? Also, I’ve never added flax to my shakes because I feel like the seeds will not blend, I’m guessing I need to get the flax meal thats already ground ?
I think I’m gonna try out:
Scoop of Grow! Whey
1/2 Cup of FF calorie countdown milk
1 cup water
tablespoon of natural PB
1/2 cup of cottage cheese
1/2 teaspoon cocoa (try it, it’s awesome and has no fat and relatively little carbs 1-2g)
1/3 or 1/2 cup black coffee (this gives me the best kick in the morning…and adds to the flavor)
Packet of splenda (maybe 2)
I’ll let you know how it tastes when I try it out tomorrow…
1 cup cottage cheese
1 heaping TBSP Unsweetened Ghiradeli cocoa (I find this one has the best taste)
4 second squeeze of Mrs. Butterworth’s Sugar Free syrup (consistency and taste complements the Ghiradelli the best)
1 Tbsp flax seeds
1 Handful of almonds
Cottage Cheese + PB is really all you need to know. I eat this at least once a day.
Others are posting good recipes though, the PB just happens to be super simple and super delicious. With the right amount it just takes like you are eating PB.

LOL I actually am using friendship. It’s not AWFUL, I just can’t see myself eating it multiple times per week.
