Colonics by the Cabana~ People Magazine:
Courtney Love has been to We Care Spa. So have Gwen Stefani, Tara Reid, Ben Affleck, Gisele Bündchen and Liv Tyler, says the spa’s manager. For up to $2,000 a week, stars undergo detox cures at the modest spa in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., where they trade solid food for vegetable juice and go for 40-minute colonic “irrigations” to help release impurities up to once a day.
While the primary goal at We Care is “a healthy lifestyle,” says spa manager Rory Legacy, “many people do lose some weight. After a colonic or two, the tummy gets very flat. We have models who come for a few days and fly right to Paris” for fashion shows.
Still, isn’t pumping about 20 gallons of liquid into the large intestine a bit…daunting? No, says Legacy. “You go into the treatment room, and the technician will show you exactly what is happening and talk to you through the process,” he says. “It doesn’t hurt, and most of the guests get fascinated by what is released by their body.”
Colonic irrigation, however, has its dangers. “This is sort of a backroom practiceâ??we don’t have any stats,” says Dr. Robert Beart, USC chief of colorectal surgery. “The risks seem to be small.” The possible risks, according to medical journals, include infections caused by contaminated water or perforation of the intestine or, in very rare instances, death.
But clients of We Care don’t seem to care. The spa has a several-weeks-long waiting list, and it’s jammed during awards season. For regulars, the place is addictive. Says owner Susana Lombardi: “They come in and they leave glowing. We have an 80 percent return rate.”
After thinking about this I remember hearing about a bunch of stars doing colonics years ago before some award show. This article is old, 2004, but I have not heard about it since so maybe they went out of style or maybe my local news just stopped talking about it.
