Collars / Clamps to Fit Any Bar

The other day in the gym, the spring collars didn’t fit the shug bar. As a result, the weights were shifting around while I deadlifted. I kept checking around the gym but none of the collars would secure tightly.

As a result, I’ll need to bring my own collars. Any recommendations on collars that would fit any bar? (just to be safe)

I had to pick up a set of spring collars at the used sports equipment store for my thin bar. It is a cheapy that I picked up from a yard sale with no collars. My good thick bar collars are too big for it. It is at least a quarter inch off so I doubt there is a spring collar that will work for both.

A gym wont want you to bring in the old screw types since they would damage the surface of the bar over time but I have seen a set of collars at a local shop that are nylon straps with velcro closures. These wouldnt work on a dumbell vertical lift but would be fine on a horizontal lift on a barbell I bet.

From Dave Tate’s “Eat my Meat”

  1. There’s no use trying to find collars for a safety squat or cambered squat bar (they won’t fit). Get a large pair of battery clips from the hardware store. They’re quick and easy to use and work perfectly.

Never tried it myself, but worth a shot.

We use that kind of clip at the gym. They can move around a little depending on what exercise you are doing, but they won’t go flying off or anything. I like them a lot better than those stupid spring clips regular gyms have.

That’s a good tip. I’ll have to pick some of those up as my gym never has any collars that work anymore either.

One question: Do they add a significant amount of weight to the bar? I don’t want the weight of the collars messing up my PRs. (Yes, I’m kidding. :P)

A gym wouldn’t want you to do heavy rack-pulls, because they damage the support bars over time… But we do it anyway xD.

I’ve been to two gyms now that have a set or two of screw-collars, and I can’t imagine them damaging barbells any more than deadlifts or something such as that.

I like those clips pictured earlier and they should work great for all sizes of bars. Those would be much nicer than the type that encircle the bar since at my gym I seem to have to match certain ones with certain bars even though they are all olympic bars.

This is equipment related so I figure I’ll ask here: Does anyone know what to call the lifts that can be seen in Ronnie Coleman’s back training video that he uses to raise the bar off the ground a bit so he can put on more plates while deadlifting? I’d really like to try to convince my gym to buy some of those.

Can be seen using them at the 44 second mark.
