Smoking pot may or may not be injurous to one’s health. However, I have noticed that it sure brings out an abnormally high level of defensiveness in a lot of users. I wonder if it is one of the compounds in the weed or if those who smoke tend to be less secure with themselves and are self-medicating to some degree? Oh well. Not my business nor do I care who does or who doesn’t smoke it.
Yeah i think maybe it was a pun, ‘chronic’. I certainly always have some vodka red bull when i go to a club. The friends i have that don’t, are either saintly, pimps or on some silly NLP experiment.

“Chronic Marijuana Use”
This indicates drug addiction, not just a guy who puffs a little and gets sleepy.
It’s amazing how people rationalize and justify their addictions.
I know people who have a case of “Chronic Alcohol Consumption” and can’t seem to go out to a club without drinking. How is this not the same? They function seemingly well and their lives aren’t falling apart. Why is it you associate extreme addiction the way you do? Are all of the people who have drinks every time they go out “addicts”?[/quote]
I can’t believe you guys think a guy who has a beer or two when he goes out (occasional use) is the same as a guy who gets stoned every day (OP). Prof, you are describing a social drinker. Now, if that guy physically HAS to drink EVERY NIGHT, then he’s a addict. Addiction is all the same. I never said it wasn’t. Alcoholics justify their behavior the same as drug addicts. Both are very bad. I seriously doubt you know any alcoholic or drug addict who has his life together. There are also sex addicts, gambling addicts, internet addicts, steroid addicts. All of them have severe consequences and those who have these addictions can justify their behavior. My point is, if you gotta get stoned you have problems. It’s your body.

And my point was alcohol is proven to be chemically addictive while marijuana is NOT. That means if you can understand the concept of a “social drinker” why do you think marijuana can’t be held under the same concept?
I smoke fairly often but always a small amount (.2g) for myself. The O.P is a chronic and in my eyes as bad as an alcoholic or a gambling addict. I don’t need to smoke but I want to. I can go weeks without it but It would be the same to me as a person not having a glass of wine with dinner.
Alot of old friends have a problem with weed , They have made nothing out of themselfs much like a person with a drinking problem would.
Chronic or alcholic , whatever your means of destroying yourself is will take over your life.
I drink , but maby once every couple of months. I have priorities , my son, my wife and my job . I also smoke when it dosnt interfere with any of those either.
Anyways Im sick of this weed + workout bullshit and medical studies .
(sorry for the spelling/grammer)

Prof,
The OP is an addict, not a social user. I personally don’t use drugs, but if someone else does sporatically, good for them. Probably isn’t going to ruin their life. The problem is, where do you draw the line between social user and addict? I have suggested that anyone who uses every day (and by use I mean to the point of intoxication) is an addict and WILL have problems.
just smoke some crack and you will be fine.

I was gonna wrote a long argument about why a bit of mull smoke will do very little damage to your development when on a good training program.
Instead I’ll go the other way and suggest that you smoke for size and strength gains.
hmmm…I guess by your definition and your beliefs I’m really a bit of a conundrum. I smoke almost everyday (albeit, small quantities), yet the only “problems” I have are quite run of the mill. I have a B.S. in Organizational Behavior and Communications. I am working on my M.A in Public Health.
I’ve got a great job in NYC with a nice office (with a window! but not yet the corner office), and I’ve got a great girl too. Actually, to tell you the truth…life is pretty good and I’m a happy and a fairly accomplished young man at the age of 28…if I do say so myself.
Am I an addict? I don’t know. I quit for months at a time but for the last four months I’ve been smoking nearly everyday. It has not negatively affected my quality of life, level of motivation, sex drive, or level of success.
But since I found T-Nation I wondered…“will it affect my weight training outcome?” That’s it! I am NOT wondering how it will affect me in life because I consider myself a success and I believe that others with a stringent sense of what success entails would feel the same if they saw:
a) My loving, intelligent and beautiful girlfriend
b) My caring circle of friends and family.
c) The home I own
d) The car I drive
e) My office
f) My bi-monthly paycheck
So as far as how it will affect me in life…that is a non-issue as I’m doing quite well, thank you. =)
My question was simply…how will it affect my weight training results.
T-Nation and this thread has provided much interesting insight but as it turns out, the answer is still up in the air…but it probably would not hurt to cut back a bit.
Anyways…Thanks all!!
Alex
well if you dont know then the dope has already done its job.

I appreciate your input! =)
I spoke to a good friend of mine from high school last week. Surprisingly I found out she smokes every night. I say surprisingly because she never smoked in highschool and was always one of those goody girls.
Anyways her reason behind it is she has a job at a law firm and goes to school full time, smoking at the end of the day helps her relax and not become overwhelmed with life. She is one year away from graduating with a bachelors in law and a degree in neuroscience. She’s only been in college for 4 years.
Thats pretty damn good considering the fact that “most addicts have screwed up there life” There’s worst things in life then smoking some bud to relax from an overly stressful life.

I am wrong. Smoke all you want. It will not and can not effect your life or progrss in weightlifting. Many scientific studies show that marijuana is as healthy as milk. It’s not addictive either. Sounds like you got everything figured out. Good luck.

Here in Switzerland, our education system is slighltly different. After 6th grade, you are put into one of the following: secondary c, worst/ secondary b, ok/secondary a, good/gymnasium, elite, requires that you pass a test and get all passing grades the first semester to stay in.
Now, I’m at the gymnasium level, going to graduate next year. And there are more stoneers than non-stoners, and very many get dead drunk every weekend. These are the kids that will go on to study at university and work in the more influential, higher paid positions later on.
Also, someone stated he knew more sucessful people who smoked than sucessful people who didn’t. What does this show? Not much, except that there are more people in general who don’t smoke than people who do.

What the heck kind of logic are they teaching you over there at the elite level? Me thinks you must have been stoned the day they taught the chapter on Boolean Algebra.

First, I have never smoked even a single joint and have only been drunk once in my whole life, so I’m not one of those I’m talking about. Also, my main study is not math, but modern languages (and just as a preemptive strike, I speak german, english, french, italian, croatian, and russian-approximately 5 more languages than the average american citizen).
Still, my reasoning is sound. If, purely hypothetically, approximately 90% of whole population don’t smoke and 10% do, and 90% of the “sucessful” population don’t smoke and 10% do, then nonsmokers are not a bit more sucessful than smokers. As for Boolean algebra, yeah, it’s taught in 7th grade, so it’s four years since I first had it, might have forgotten some parts.

Robert, I don’t care if you smoke, drink, inject or whack off 17 times per day.
And you’re right about Americans and languages, in general. It’s one of our biggest of many weaknesses. I only speak 4 which, as I recall, was the required number for Swiss students to take in school the last time I was there. Here, in the U.S., we get angry if somebody speaks Spanish to us and rant that they have to speak English if they want to be in this country. However, when we visit their country, we get just as angry if they don’t speak English. Sadly, that is all part of the arrogant American culture.
And, just for clarification, I didn’t question you conclusion. I merely pointed out that it was impossible to get to that conclusion from what you quoted. Now I suggest that you use your elite god given mental prowess and study some humility. You’re sounding too American.

What crap. It makes you stupid. Why do you think it’s called dope?
The slowing down of decision making skills has been a known side effect of marijuana for many years, even back when it was thought to be completely safe.
I have smoked A LOT of marijuana. I have studied it extensively. I now think that I have become less intelligent due to my high use. I can only hope this will reverse in time.
If you think smart people use it then you are kidding yourself. Truly smart people either wouldn’t use, or would use knowing that they are doing something unhealthy. Only an idiot smokes thinking it’s not affecting them for the worse.
