Christian Bale Rant on Set of Terminator

For what it’s worth it was during the release of TDK which was a HUGE event and definitely put a lot of pressure on Bale. That and the fact that it was foreshadowed by Ledger’s death. If you’ve seen any of his interviews during that time, he looked rather pissed and on edge.

Initially he also didn’t want to do T4. It was only because Jonah Nolan rewrote the script that Bale came on board.

His reputation is known to be very intense. He puts his work before all the celebrity stuff. He doesn’t seek attention.

I think his rant was taken a bit out of context. Surely he could have handled it a bit better, but to me he’s still one of the best actors of his generation.

Nice, I wonder if he fights like a man?

I think the guy should have dressed up like the Joker the next day.

I’m sure that Bale and the crew would have had a good chuckle.

didn’t he go ape shit on his mother too. He’s turning into a superjerk

Yeah, I wonder what the details were on that incident?

From what I heard they were trying to blackmail / get money from him or something like that and it was well-deserved.

his rant actually reminds me a lot of all the “idiots at my gym” threads.

Yeah, that would definitely have me on edge. I don’t think I would take it out on some guy trying to do his job, but I guess it explains the free-floating anxiety/anger at that time.

In my mind, Bale doesn’t get a free pass because he’s Bale, or Bateman, or Wayne, or makes millions…

He gets a free pass because he’s human.

So what if he runs a little hot, and who knows if there were any underlying circumstances revolving the whole incident. Fuck man, who hasn’t had that kind of outburst in their life? Anyone?

And who gives a fuck if it lasted 4 minutes or 3 seconds, it’s still a blow up meltdown tantrum that doesn’t fix anything or make anyone look good within the whole process.

Fact- McG coulda stopped it.
Fact- Bale got out of hand.
Fact- The DP acted like a meek little baby.

I mean, there’s being respectful and apologetic and then there’s being a complete and utter pussy. The DP was the latter IMO. When that happens, the attacker goes for blood. I’ve been in that position before and feel like a big asshole for it, but when someone cowers rather than argues back it’s an instinct to destroy them. Tell me that isn’t true.

For those who would have been fired for outbursts like that, I get your points 100%, but sometimes it’s in the best interest of everyone involved to let men be men and figure shit out on their own. This whole “I would have been fired if I’d acted that way” line just doesn’t matter.

So, is Bale a cocksucker for this thing? At that moment, yep he was. However, should we be all spun up and offended by it?

No way.

I’m sorry but this is the reason why I love this guy! So intense!

a lot of haters saying they don’t care how much money someone makes. why mention it. it sucks but it is think it the tirade is taken out of context. not because i’m a diehard bale fan. i think is a precise actor like a lot of the great ones. i wasn’t there but it seems he built up to a certain point and now had to go all the way to square one for no reason.

the poor guy shouldn’t be abused for a mistake but it seems like someone with his job description is the last person anyone would think would be ignorant of what is at stake. i’m not an actor or director or set designer but i learned a long time ago that standing in a particular spot for a scene is important and the lighting is something they sometimes take days to synch with the script.

I agree with a lot of this, but Bale doesn’t get a pass for being an Alpha Dog.

Like DB mentioned, there are a lot better actors that don’e act like assholes.

I am not offended except for those people who had to put up with it because their jobs depended on a dickhead.

what a power tripping asshole

and for those who call morality police and say dipshits for being offended? well… guess what, a lot of us would love to have knocked his head off but would bite our tongues to keep a job and keep food on the table for our families, our spouses, our children.

he can be replaced.

What a piece of crap.If he were not famous he would easily get ktfo.

the biggest loser how thread was better than this one.

This is the only post worth reading in this whole thread. Especially if you have read up about the context of the situation.

Hey folks, Harry here… I’m getting slammed with assloads of people angry at me for not posting the Bale explosion from the set of McG’s TERMINATOR: SALVATION. Well, first off - there’s a real simple reason. It isn’t news. And it certainly isn’t cool news. It is a moment in a man’s life taken completely out of context and most likely leaked to personally embarrass Christian Bale.

Now, I know what a lot of you are thinking… There’s no excuse for a temper tantrum like that to ever occur and if you are going to act that way, you deserve to be embarrassed by your own actions.

Except, you want to hear the REALITY behind that clip?

I know this because I happen to be somewhere where someone that was there that day and for the shoot is. And this person isn’t a publicist, nor are they invested in Bale’s career. They’re just someone that thinks it is absolute bullshit that this moment in Bale’s life is being aired and that the real story should get out there.

The DP on TERMINATOR SALVATION, Shane Hurlbut, is a apparently a light tweaker. He’s a fairly young DP and likes to fiddle with his lights on set during action, which is a big “NO NO” on most productions unless worked out in advance with performers. But apparently Shane was a pretty unrepentant light tweaker.

The scene in question, was a very emotional and tough scene between Christian Bale and Bryce Howard. A scene that required soul bearing and a deep level of immersive concentration. The sort of scene where everyone on set knows not to get in anyone’s eye lines, and definitely not to move lights around while FILMING. You lock that shit down before the scene starts.

Bale had indeed warned the DP on multiple occasions about messing with lights while the cameras were rolling, and Bale was in the midst of a painful scene with Bryce, what was described to me as being the emotional center of the film and his character for the film.

Now, the reason I know all of this is because the person that was there, felt that it should be made perfectly clear that Christian Bale was the utmost gentleman and cool guy on set. And the DP really was doing something that professional DPs with experience just don’t do. Not during a performance.

You don’t need me to give you a link, it’s all over the internet, I just felt that you should know what really went down - and that this particular outburst did indeed modify the DP’s behavior - and for future DPs. Fuck with the lights before and after your actors are acting. Not during.

Christan Bale doesn’t get paid to be nice to anyone, he gets paid to act.

This incurs a question of balance, though. Most people are, however incidentally, paid to be nice to others. But our culture places value on certain talents (=popularity=salary), and excuses the lack of being nice respectively. I earn just over minimum wage because I haven’t developed any highly valued talents, therefore I cannot afford to be less than polite to other people. If Bale were enough of an asshole to outweigh his talent, he would be fired. That asshole standard is just different than the one I’m judged by.

I had a boss a while back who would blow up on his employees. I think it would have been a funny situation if I’d taken his same words and blown up on a client, just for the heck of seeing his reaction on being confronted with a double standard.

I don’t see the difference. What is acceptable behavior at his job entitles him to behave differently?

The method of treating people with respect, even when they make mistakes and you are angry, does not change, no matter what the circumstance.

meh, who cares, he’s probably a perfectionist with a coke habit under a lot of stress, im a chef, ive worked in high end restaurants where this type of behavior happens all the time, obviously movie sets can be very stressful, and everyone deals with stress differently, im a Bale fan, yeah he sounded like a c@#t at this particular time, but it wont stop me from watching his movies.
