So, I don’t usually post in the Bodybuilding forum, because I don’t think I have a right to do so, but maybe you gents can give me some advice on the subject.
As a stupid sonuvabitch high school kid with no parental guidance, I did not train legs. In fact, I ran cross country. Try to imagine the disadvantage at which this put me.
I do mostly powerlifting stuff now, but devote half my sessions to lower body movements. My legs still look like shit.
Fix me.

BROSCIENCE ALERT
you are not squatting with high enough reps. I’m talking 10-30- rep horrible nightmare sets.
How often have you heard guys say that squats just give them a big ass? Well most of the time (this is what I’ve noticed anyway) these guys tend to be doing 5x5 or similar.
My theory is glutes respond best to low reps, but quads need high as fuck reps. So by squatting with low reps you are providing your glutes with the perfect training stimulus for growth, but not providing anywhere near enough for your quads.
This leads to people complaining their ass only gets bigger when they squat, although I’ve never really understood why people are so scared of a bit of glute hypertrophy. I wear my oversized ass with pride and have been told on more than one occasion it’s my best feature, but I digress.
So yeah, if squats aren’t doing anything for your legs, you need to do much higher reps.

To add onto this, I noticed pretty good gains in my quads just by doing a single 20 rep squat set (back then I used high bar, that’s probably relevant)twice a week after heavier lifts. Didn’t think they stalled strength gains at all, and Wendler approves of their use as a first assistance lift for 531. Just food for thought
