Cheat Curl = Ultimate Functional Exercise

This is an interview with some dude from Sorinex.
For those who don’t know, Sorinex is the company that
manufactures the “Back Attack” Good-Morning Machine
and the “Hurricane” Lever Machine (both are used at Westside)

Sorinex also posts videos of people doing kettlebell snatches
on bosu balls through their YouTube Channel.

My Humble Opinion on this Video: Doing a Cheat Curl with an
underhand grip is dumb as hell and is a pretty good way to tear your bicep. But based off the points that this guy has made, I gotta say that Hammer Curls and Especially Heavy Log Curls
are looking like better exercise than before.

Dan John’s throwing site seems to be very pro-cheat curl and overhead squat. the cheat curl is more a curl grip power clean than anything else.

Are you gonna tear your tricep on a push press or jerk?
Did you see that throw and catch with about a minute left from Manning to Tyree? Holy shit that was awesome.
Gotta agree with you on the Cheat log curls but i dont see why they would be ok and regular cheat curls wouldnt.

I wouldn’t say it’s the ultimate functional exercise, but I do agree that cheat curls have their place. Like cleans and deadlifts, though, you have to do them right, or else, injury will be inevitable.

The same reason doing trap-bar deadlifts is safe but doing reverse-grip deadlifts is bad. With a neutral hand placement or a pronated hand placement you’re not going to be putting as much stress on your bicep.

It’s mainly only used for discus throwers. I can’t see the carry over to many other sports, where a pulling motion like that is used.

As someone else already said, Dan John is a big fan of this exercise when used for discus training.

Al Oerter: 5 x 325lbs cheat curls. Crazy.

I feel like I need to say this: I don’t really think the Cheat Curl is the Ultimate Functional Exercise. I just wanted people to check this thread out.

I’m gonna have to say that Cheat Curls and Log Curls might fit the bill for Keg Tosses and Caper Tosses. Might also be useful for getting off the line and getting in position to block for a lineman.

It might be harder to convince people that cheat like hell curls are a good exercise. You can’t convince me of it. But I also think that it’s pretty hard to make a case against Log Curls as they’ll help anyone who needs to be strong. I’m gonna say that they’re not as good as an Olympic Lift because you’re defiantly not working the back to the same extent but just because an exercise isn’t as good as a Power Clean doesn’t mean it’s not a good exercise.

Actually, the average gym rat loves to do these, especially the squat rack curler type.

I think the problem is his form is too strict.

Are we gonna start a “monolift curlers” thread? lol

The “dude” from sorinex is Richard Sorin himself. lol

Anywhoo… here’s a video showing Ricky Bruch doing what appears to be a 160-170kg cheat curl/clean on Eleiko bumpers. (It might actually be a bit more, he has change on the sides. )He also does what appear to be 110kg (or more) for reps. Its towards the end of the vid.

The “Power Clean” video from Bigger Faster Stronger shows Stefan Fernholm doing a 385lb cheat curl/clean. Magnus Samuelsson’s Worlds Strongest Arms video shows 140kg (308lb) cheat curls for reps. Kazmaier did 315 for I believe 15 reps.

So yeah, 325 x 5 by Oerter is very do-able. I myself maxed at 295 for a triple last week and I am a nobody.

I know those numbers are “nufin’” we all know guys who did 400 for reps in high school… riiight…

They are actually much easier on the shoulders than conventional grip cleans, you dont even feel the stress on the biceps if done correctly. My power clean is 330, so yeah, there seems to be a good carryover doing them this way.

Fun stuff, go try them.
