Chasing Big Strick

Great lifting LS! Really a bummer about the lat and shoulder pain. Good that you’re doing face pulls for the shoulders.

Thanks eco… The lat feels better and the shoulder as well. Shoulder is still a bit tweaky when put under significant (by my standards) stress.

You know, that is one of those things that no one ever told me…that I need to hit the rear delts and upper back to keep the shoulder healthy. So, I have started doing reverse flies or face pulls every workout.

Legs/Back-

Hip and leg stretching, mobility work…

Squats - Shouldn’t have worked out so early. My legs were definitely asleep.
bwx10x2
barx10
135x10
225x5
315x3x2
365x3x2 - partials…big time
275x6

Rack Pulls - set just below the knee cap
225x5
315x3
385x3
435x3 - PR +35#

455x2 - PR +55#

475x1 - PR +75#

490x0 - bar didn’t budge

Face Pulls
100x12x3

Wide Grip Pulldowns (front)
160x12x3

Felt good about the rack pulls. I want to DL 500# by the end of August. If I can get my rack pulls to 500# for reps, I can really concentrate on squats and the bottom of the pull.
Thinking of this, I told my wife I need to buy 10# of weight (I currently have 490# and need that to get me to 500#). Noting my failed attempt at 490#, she smiled and said, “Why? You can’t lift the weights you have.”

Everyone’s a smartass…

Looking strong ls…

Your making some fast gains.
nice work

Tell her it’s more motivation if you actually have the plates sitting there looking at you. Or save your lunch money and buy them on the sly…

Nice rack pulls, by the way…

Way to go on those rack pulls!!!

Thanks gents…

kmc - I am still in the “beginners” or catch-up phase. It will slow down. I just hope that it isn’t too soon.

soldog - she was just playfully picking at me. She hasn’t stopped me from spending $1000+ on weights and equipment, over the past 3 months. I don’t think she would argue over another $10…lol

math - it is getting there. Boy am I am paying for it now. Hips and low back are aching.

You, Sir, are a lucky man!

I am indeed. I think it really comes from a) I work, she doesn’t and b) her life story…which is far too long and complicated to put out here. Let’s just say that she, in many ways, takes a more traditional view…but got there by a very non-traditional route.

Edit: That is not to imply that she is not opinionated and can’t be rather stubborn. That comes with marriage, though.

Nice pulls Strick.

Thanks bigbumpy… definitely a work in progress.

On another note…note to self: NEVER lift early in the day ever again. I am paying the price for working out so early. My everthing is sore and tight right now.

Ouch… Did you marry my wife’s sister? It’s that type of comment that keeps me from building my own gym at home

Actually, she is all for my working out. Sometimes I feel like I am on display, though, when she comes in to watch me.

The home gym was an expensive compromise, to keep me from spending all my time at a gym. For what I have spent, though, I could have pre-paid 3 years dues at the gym.

Ouch… again, but money well worth it. Your lucky to have that support!

Good lifting.

I would say go for broke and get 45s because you are going to need them soon. You don’t want to be buying little plates everytime you hit a PR. I have over 600lbs in plates at home but only 4 are 45s. Drives me nut sometimes because I may have to buy more bigger plates when I am strong enough to pull 600.

You’re right on that. No need to gather even more 5’s and 10’s. I just hate going and dropping $95 for 90# of weight.

Bench Day -

Couple of things…
My shoulder is still slightly off (well, both of them, but I am used to the issue on the left…never better, never worse, just there). I decided I would play the bench by ear. The weights felt REALLY heavy, but I think that was because my shoulder was a bit tweaky and I was favoring it. So, I decided to keep pushing the weight up until I had to stop.
Also, I used the bench setup mentioned earlier, to try to get my shoulders closer to the rack and not have to go so far back to rack it. This worked until it got heavy. At 305#, the bar went up and hit the bottom of the rack pins. Fortunately, I had enough gas to re-lower the weight a bit and press it around the pin. Unfortunately, I burned a lot of gas on the set. I ended up having to go back to my previous setup.

The workout…

dislocatesx10x2
YTWLx2

Bench
barx20x2
95x15
135x15
185x5
225x5
275x1
305x1 - This is the set where I hit the underside of the pin
320x1 - PR +5# - Ties my lifetime PR, set 10 years ago.

325x0 - no gas left…failed on the way down.
225x5 - REALLY no gas left

Supersetted Rev. Flyes and Shrugs

Rev. Flyes
35sx10x3

Shrugs
225x12
275x10x2 - had to use a DL grip for these…can’t hold it but for 6-7 reps with overhand.

Pushdowns - elbows out
140x10x2

Pushdowns - elbows in
100x20x2

I am still avoiding OH presses, close grip presses and pin presses due to the shoulder. I seemed to have gotten through without any issues. I hope that it heals up quickly as I am missing them.

Hey congrats on the PR LS! I suspect you had more in you had you jumped more instead of going directly to 320. The way that bar went up at 320 - I think you had 330. I’m going to have to work out my own setup in the rack now as well…

320? Muscle memory or no, that’s just awesome. Great work.

Do DB presses bother your shoulder?

DUDE!!! Nice benching!!! Whoa!
