Oh yeah…I had meant to mention in my workout post, I actually tracked my protein intake for the day. I have been experiencing “protein envy” what with SteelyD’s 400g/day goal and awe at Meat’s 600g.
I managed 310g yesterday. I am going to track it through the week, as I have a fairly consistent diet. But I am guessing that it will always be around 300g, now that I have added morning eggs to the diet. Of course, that includes 3 shakes/smoothies a day. Problem is that I workout late enough that I often don’t feel like eating afterward. So, I get a 90g post workout shake and then a 50g pre-bed shake…and, maybe, something light in between…which compensates for the the normal 50g evening shake, prior to eating, on off days.
I don’t know how I missed it, but happy 40th birthday!
I used to think that I’d be an adult when I turned 30. Then it was 40. Then 50. Now, I’m hoping to finally grow up when I hit 60. Yup. Once I hit 60, I’m gonna stop messin’ 'round with all this childish stuff. That’s the ticket!
Thanks Mathineer. I am completely convinced that whatever growing up I have done is a direct result of having kids and myself being “dad.” I am fighting it all the way, of course.
I have so much more respect for my Dad, now. In the end, when all others had failed or caved in to the pressure, he always made sure it got taken care of…whatever “it” was. I can only hope that my kids remember me in the same light.
**If you have managed to get this far without growing up, you have my praise and envy. Don’t give in now!!
Tracked protein again. 305g today… Man am I looking forward to benching tomorrow! Of course, my traps are still aching. I would have thought that the DLs and rack pulls would have hit them better. Once again, I was wrong…

You’ve me thinking I need to start tracking my intake once again. I’ve been maintaining my winter fat and getting stronger but my recovery has suffered at times.

Are you gonna try for another PR tomorrow? I think you short-changed yourself with the 310 when you were a little stressed. Go for at least 325!

I think the biggest obstacle to my recovery is sleep. I never seem to get in bed when I want to. My youngest keeps showing up in our bed sometime between midnight and 2:00…and I don’t sleep comfortably after that, even if I don’t know he is there. And I have a habit of waking up several times a night.
Heck, if I could string together a few weeks of good sleep, I might be able to lift half of what Meat does.

Thanks FF-
35 huh? Just when I was starting to think that I was the kid around here.
On the bench, I am doing my dead level best to not max too often. That is how I used to do it, but I am REALLY trying to stick with a program right now. It isn’t easy breaking old habits.
I have already bastardized my 5x5. I do 4 bench and 4 leg workouts every 15-16 days. So, what I am trying to do, for bench, is 5x5 on workout #1, 3x3 (heavier) on workout #2, then 5x5, 3x3, etc…
Thursday was supposed to be a 5x5. Since I hosed that one, I think I will do the 3x3 today. I plan on maxing again on the 30th, as I have a short term goal for July 1st.
As mentioned above, I am alternating 5x5 and 3x3 on my bench days. Today was a 3x3. Again, just like last bench workout, everything felt heavy and I was still kind of achy. I am not sure what to think of that. It doesn’t appear that my strength has suffered, just my perception of the weight and my overall sense of well being.

Dadgummit if I didn’t start with that lift thingy again, just before doing the rep. I have got to stop that!

I tracked my protein yet again. 355g for the day. I am really hopeful that, if I can get some decent sleep for a change, that achy, out of synch feeling will go away. Although, it doesn’t seem to bother me on leg/back days, just bench/tri/delt days. Yet another mystery to solve…
If’n y’all want my opinion, you’re creeping into overreaching. That’s noticeable when the strength is there but there are nagging aches and the fire ain’t in the belly and sleep patterns get disrupted. You’re doing a lot of stuff. You’ve got 4 pressing moves and 2 triceps builders. This is good to do for punctuated/short periods of time followed by a deload, but not usually as a regular training practice. Maybe two big pressing moves and a triceps builder might be enough to recover from? Look at it in terms of tonnage. It’s a lot.
Thanks DCA- I had actually been wondering if I needed to scale back a bit. I don’t think this is affecting my sleep, as I wasn’t sleeping great before I started back. But I definitely see how it could affect the rest of me.
I have already scaled it back slightly. When I first started back I was doing 26-28 total sets. Now I am trying to keep it at 21 or less. Do you have a number of exercises/sets that you try to stay under?
As to my delusions of actually getting some good sleep last night,I saw every hour on the clock…some of them twice. Yes, this is extreme. I normally wakeup 2-4 times a night.
Do all of you sleep soundly? If not, what have you tried that actually helped? When I hit the hay, I am tired, and have no problem going to sleep. It is staying asleep that gets me.

I can’t GET to sleep. I struggled with it for 4 years and got a sleep study done. They told me i was a classic insomniac. They said lose some weight and it would help. 65 lbs lighter, I take 12 mg of melatonin, and a 10 mg Ambien nightly. Thank God itâ??s the generic. Oh I also found out I sleep better if I eat a light meal early, so no big meals for me, and I try to eat before 6:30. That pisses the wife off.
The one silver lining, I don’t suffer from jet lag.

I feel for ya. I haven’t really slept well in over a year. I honestly think it’s because I’ve had to move my workouts to the PM hours (like 6-8pm). I get home, and although I’m physically exhausted, my system is primed up.
On top of that, I had some kind of thing go through me like a freight train last night, shivers, cold sweats, fever. I took a hot shower and jumped in bed and proceeded to lose what felt like a gallon of water last night. I’m pretty much worthless today so far.
Lack of sleep just catches up with your system eventually.

12mg of Melatonin? Wow! I take 1 and can tell the difference.
How does the Ambien work for you? Any issues with hangovers? Do you feel like the sleep is actually sound?
I am convinced that my gains, and general sense of being, would be much improved with just being able to sleep through the night.

Now that you mention it…
On the days that I get off work at 4:00 and, hence, workout an hour earlier…and on weekends, when I workout early afternoon, I do sleep a bit better.
And, as much as I am fighting to not put a stop to it, if I could keep my littlest out of my bed (Mr. head-butt, knees, elbows and feet), I know I would sleep better. It’s just one of those things that, when he stops, that phase in life is gone. And I am going to miss it!

I sleep like a sack of sand, once I get in bed. I can, however, just stay awake easily and find all sorts of stuff to do and think about (yes, video games) before that point. But once in, I am dead to the world until my wife “punches me up” or my son starts trampolining.

I have insomnia pretty bad. I take an Ambien nightly. I have mistakenly taken them in the morning a time or 2 and have driven to work, had meetings and not remembered a thing. Now I have my night time pills in a completely different spot. They help me get to sleep. once i am asleep I can get back to sleep pretty easy. I havent had a hangover problem with them. BUT I have had to take a Sonnata on top of the Ambien. Sometimes my empty mind actually works in overdrive… Go figure!!!
