Change After Ripptoes Novice?

Hi all,

I have been doing Ripptoes Novice Practical Programming (SS w/o cleans but with chins/pulls) for a few months now. My squat numbers are still going up, but I am kind of getting tired of working my ass off for nothing but numbers (yes, vanity is kicking in).

My current stats are, 31 y/o, 6ft 190-195lbs:

Squat: 3x5 @ 275
Bench: 3x5 @ 215
DL: 1x5 @ 350
Press: 3x5 @ 140
Chins/Pulls: 3 sets to fail with 45lb weight 11/10/10

I was looking to change from this and start increasing the reps. Im still new so I was wondering if their was another tried and true program out there.

Or if you think that I should just stay on SS and stfu, just let me know.

Thanks for any help.

In my opinion I would continue running the prograam if you are seeing gains no point in fixing something that is not broken. However if you honestly don’t enjoy the program then try something different such as WS4SB its a split and is still geared towards strength for sure but you would def see more size gains and in alot of cases (mine included) would see even faster strength gains but every one is different.

5/3/1

You can probably add some vanity stuff to your current program, aslong as you keep it in check it will probably not hurt your recovery.

Example:

Session A:
Squat.
Bench.
Chins.

  • lateral raises and rear raises.

Session B:
Squat.
Press.
DL.

  • curls and pushdowns.

Just go for the pump in this “vanity” excercises, nothing heavy that will impair your performance in the big lifts.

Just and idea.

ps. Good job on your lifts so far man

SS is really more for strength than hypertrophy, I was on it then switched the 531 boring but big

Thanks a lot for the comments guys, I appreciate the feedback. I know I need to keep getting my squat up, and SS is a fast way to do it, I just didn’t know if I was missing out or if I’m trying to have my cake and eat it too.

Dreadlock: Were you able to still make strength gains on the Boring but big, or just maintain? Do you like the program?

20 rep squats are also a good way to get squats up. If you’ve got the mental stamina for it.

You should see steady strength gains on Boring But Big since that’s the cornerstone of all the 5/3/1 programs, Then there’s different assistant work to fit your other goals.
