A few days ago I posted my dealing with a lower back strain/injury (?)from around New Years. This Thursday & Friday I have a complete physical and a chiro appt. respectively but the week prior, I stopped working out altogether (you could call it my “back-off week” LOL) and I’m afraid I’m chubbing up big-time despite watching my diet somewhat.
Basically I am looking for suggestions how to do cardio with a lower back injury… Sex with the GF is dicey right now but I let my adrenaline power me through it, ha ha.
Seriously though, should I still do the bike and the elliptical trainer ? Running is out of the question right now as the impact is felt and I fear exacerbating the injury. Swimming is out since I don’t know how.
Any feedback is appreciated and I look forward to hearing from anyone who has also gone through this and your experiences.
Thanks,
JAY
It all depends on how injured you are, how far along you are in your recovery, and whether your Doctor thinks certain activities may be a threat… Having said that, I think the general rule of thumb in injury rehab is “If it hurts, don’t do it”. I’d also add this… If you have to adjust the way do it(compensation), don’t do it. The last thing you want is to add injury upon injury.
You say rows don’t hurt, what kinda rows are you doing?
Do either of the following movements hurt or cause any numbness:
a) extension( leaning backwards)
b) flexion (slumping, or curving forward)
c) lateral flexion ( side bending)
If any of the above cause an increase in symptoms, where does the increase occur?
Are you experiencing any numbness or shooting pains?
How did this injury occur (You said you think it was from squatting, did you mean it happened while squatting or do you think it occured due to repetition of bad form while squatting?)
I’m not really qualified to diagnose anything but coming off of a back injury that lasted about 3 years I might be able to share some info!
