Can't Stay Asleep

I started having a similar problem this year.

It could be a lot of things. I guess a sudden onset of sleep apnea is a possibility if you are really putting on weight.

How do you know you are waking up repeatedly? I know by the fact that I glance at the alarm clock and then fall right back asleep. I also dream excessively and in great detail. This happens both on and off ZMA.

This is a type of insomnia(sleep maintenance insomnia) and it is tough to deal with. Supplements dont help in my experience(mostly because Gaba, Melatonin etc is to help you fall asleep).

There is a book, The Insomnia Answer, which proposes a regimine of sleep restriction to counteract sleep maintenance insomnia. It may be worth looking into.

Take heart. I know exactly how you feel and in the scheme of things, its not all that bad. Trust me, your body is getting the sleep it needs. If you find a solution, let me know.
i ahve a lot of craazy vivid dreams and when i wake up it takes me a little while to fal asleep. i have had somke stress lately, girlfriend breaking up with me, work, and im going to a new school in a couple weeks. these could all be factors. if it keeps up im going to the doctor. i doubt its slep apnea i jsut got off a cut im not big 205 and ive been alot heavier(FAT) in the past. i dont have to get up at 6 tommorow so ill see how it goes. it sucks when im finally getting my diet and training in check and something stupid goes wrong. i used to have a problem falling asleep but now its jsut the quality of my sleep.

Its interesting that you say that you used to have a problem falling asleep. Thats how my current situation began…garden variety insomnia probably due to a crazy work schedule and some other stress. After that went away(for the most part), I was left with the sleep maintenance problem.

The guys who wrote the book I mentioned said that this is a typical pattern. It results from having problems with sleep which results in greater time spent in bed trying to compensate. This pulls apart the fabric of your sleep(your body begins figuring out it doesnt need to be asleep for the whole time you are in bed) and causes you to wake up more fequently than you used to. At least that is their theory. They also claim the answer is sleep restriction therapy, which I have been unable to try because my work schedule is still crazy. The book is worth a read.

sleep resticton therapy as in not sleep for a whole night kind of thing? yeah i woke up last night even more often

Not really. To simplify greatly, you would take a set period of time, say between 11 PM and 5 AM and spend that in bed, hopefully sleeping. Once 5 Am rolls around, your up until 11 that night. No naps and no extra time inbed. 6 hours is an average to start but the book gives a more precise way of figuring your starting time. After a couple of days, your natural sleep drive should have you sleeping solidly through those 6 hours. Once you are at that point, you add 15 or 30 minutes to your time in bed until you are up to your target…probably 7 to 9 hours.

Like I said, I havent tried it because my work schedule precludes giving it an honest shot. I would imagine the first couple days are pretty bad, especially if you dont sleep much during your 6 hours. However, in theory, it seems to make sense and could help reset a screwed up sleep system.

I find for myself, that ZMA keeps me awake. But melatonin rocks my world. 30 minutes after a dose of melatonin I am out. Normal benadryl works exactly the same for me, one benadryl and I’m down for the count.

Hope this helps.

Short term…benadryl or melatonin. Both over the counter, cheap and with little side effects. Both work. The sleep retraining in the post above also works, but takes more effort.

Why do you say that?

Can you stack GABA wiith your pre-bed ZMA?

Is there reason not to take GABA at all?

no i dont take steroids

i jsut started my bulk till im huge. well problem is i try and go to bed early and i normally fall asleep around 10. but every 2 hours i wake up. I wanna sleep because when i wake up at 6am i am exhausted. Are there any methods that will help keep me asleep. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing too scientific here, but my only suggestion would be to include some type of ‘white noise’ to help you both fall, and stay, asleep.

I have a fan that I keep by my bedside that I have blowing all night. The quiet “humming” sound it produces just knocks me out, and drowns out any other random noises that might wake me up.

I used to do that too and it works great. But then I realized that it is probably not environmentally friendly because I’m using electricity all night. That’s why I hired someone to hum whenever I start to stir in my sleep. It costs a shitload, but I like the feeling that I’m helping to save the environment.

DB

I use an air cleaner at night which makes that humming noise. I can barely fall asleep with that noise now, and hey at least I’m cleaning the air so it not a total waste to the environment :)
i have my wife give me a “hummer” before bed. its relaxing, im saving money, electricity, and the enviroment.
just my peanuts worth…
-jjt-

I used to take my supps just before going to bed, I found that this really messed with sleep.
I take two doses, 1 with breakfast and then at around 2:30-3:00 p.m.
Now I sleep.
good luck with it.

Why ?

pre bed supps: 3mg melatonin when needed, a serving of ZMA, a children’s aspirin 81mg, a concentrated garlic pill, half of a vitamin, and a vegetable concentrate pill. i take the aspirin to thin my blood and lower any inflamation. i think garlic is known to decrease blood pressure and helps clean out the plaque in the blood vessels.

I love the white noise that other people talk about. i can sleep with the vacuum on. In the summer i leave the ac on low and make sure the room is pitch black with minimal light.

Also try to eat a slow digesting meal with small liquid amounts to prevent you from having low blood sugar levels and having to go to urinate. laters pk

Ive said this many times before and I’ll say it again about ZMA - Split the dosage up - for some people it might affect sleep in a negative way if taken before bed. I was the same way as alot of you - I would have restless sleep and have nightmares.

I started splitting the dosage up throughout the day, making sure my last dose was by 6pm. Everything smooth since them. Your not getting a huge shot of magnesium in each tab when you split it up so you won’t get drowsy. And you get all the benefits of Zinc and Magnesium supplementation(and there is a laundry list of them) without the sleep issues. Some people even get a little boost from Vit B6.
