Can't Gain Weight
wukey wrote:
i knew this was coming, i was realy shocked about how easy you were on me yesterday, (must have been the uk crowd) this is probably what i needed (but totally not what i wanted)

I’ve thrown out my old meal plan and i’ll come back in a couple of days with a new one.

in my defence, i may be in ‘skinny fucked denial’ but i really want to get big, i want it enough to take this public flaming and take it all onboard. after all thats what i posted for. if i do what you say and start gaining again i’ll be the first to admit i was wrong and thank you all for thew slap in the face. i supose the answer was always going to be the one that was most difficult for me to do (otherwise i’d have done it ages ago)

Thats the spirit, I am a skinny bastard myself, very skinny.

Try the following as a post workout shake if you cant get hold of Surge

500 ml of milk
2 Banana’s
2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter
1 Tablespoon Milo (Or any other chocolate milk drink)
1 Serving of Protein Powder
250 ml of Cottage Cheese

That is a 1000+ calories

As I am a newbie myself, most of the advice I can give you is probably wrong, but I do believe that this is a kick-ass post workout shake.

Good luck bro!

The plain and simple truth, if you’re not gaining weight, EAT MORE.

Whaaaa you have a high metabolism…shut the fuck up and EAT MORE!

dude you are a tool… . sometimes its not that simple… . really… . I once ate 4000-5500cals a day for over 3 months and didnt gain any weight… . then I read a charles poliquins piece about HCL supplementation… . I tried it out and managed to put on 5kgs in a short time with only 3500cals a day. …

as people have said before its not just how many calories you eat but how much you actually absorb… . Im going to guess you have never had a hard time gaining weight… . because its quite easy to say “eat more” to a person who already feels sick force feeding 1000cals above maintenance. …

he maybe a tool, maybe not, but i’m going to up my cals even more first befor i try any other avenues, i’d be arogant to ask for advice and then ignor it. anyway there can only be one of two outcomes; 1. i gain weight and thank everyone who slapped me in the face with the reality stick, or 2 i still don’t gain weight and i’m back to squar one. then i’ll try this HCL. i think i read the same article, was it about stomach acid?

i’ve already got a doctors appointment so i might as well go and ask him.

PS. just a side note, when i was making my best gains (i know they were newby gains) i didn’t know much and was only having about 2000 per day. when the gains stopped i raised them to 2500 then to 3000 then to 4000+ and nothing, not even a gram of weight gain, a while ago i started a thread about how i could increase my calories when i already feel full all day and i actioned all the helpfull stuff on the thread and still no gains which is why i’ve started this thread. to me it seemed foolish to keep doing the same thing and expect different results (ie increase calories), but for all i know there may be a magical level that once i go over it i’ll start gaining again, don’t know till i try.

thanks for the alternative opinion.

You might wanna include in your new diet 1000 mL of milk before AND after you sleep at night. A glass of milk after EVERY snack AND meal can also help.

The key here is if you can’t eat anymore, drink even more. If the food can’t fill your stomach, the milk will, with all the calories and protein it has along with it. Stuffing yourself with all the milk you can swallow will help you increase weight.

Still, don’t ignore the possibility that you have a hormone imbalance. You said something about having hyperactivity, right? That’s a symptom of excess thyroid hormones, which also causes overdrive metabolism, so still see your doctor to be on the safe side.

thanks, i like your responces, helpfull without making me feel stupid.

I’ll def bring it up with my doctor this friday and let you all know how i got on.
thanks again

I wonder how many of these guys who claim to be eating all these calories are well below 20% of em from fat.

EAT MORE. Sure you may be eating a lot of meals throughout the day, but there are not too many calories in each of those meal. Load them up with some good nutrient and calorie dense foods.

by my calculation my meal plan packs in about 4500 cals, for someone who weight 150 i thought that was quite alot. the weight gainer i take has 1000cal per serving and in 100g of nuts theres about 500cals and my main meal is always very big and i think it has at least 1000 cals. on days that i workout i have about 3600cals in milkshakes alone.

I really appreciate the advise, and i will take it all on board its just a bit frustrating. i feel i eat more than some obese people but i’m skinny like a rake!!! AARRGH
Dude i was the EXACT SAME WAY. they too called me the machine. I started off at a weight of 135 when i started lifting 3 years ago, and i was 5’10. What i did and if this is a good idea, i dunno but it worked for me.

I would take a slimfast before the meal (soppose to be like a meal in one) And then i would eat a huge ass meal. I would do that 3 times a day. WEll 3 yrs later im 205. also i thinks omething that pushed me over tha top was Workin my legs instead of just upper body.

Doing tha squats, deadlifts, all that fun shit. Makes you grow wider u know?. Oh and if you do this, make sure not to forget to keep workin ur stomach…

Please…PLEASE, stop over analyzing this. You are not that skinny. You are 150lbs at 5’9".

I was 160lbs at 6’1" till i was out of highschool. I think i finally hit 180 at the age of 22. I am 25 now and just over 200. This is normal!!!

I used to have to force feed myself. I used to think that I was eating soooo much. It wasn’t until i stopped caring so much about what i was eating that i started gaining weight. I found for a skinny-wristed hyperactive guy like myself, my body worked really well with increased kcal from fat in my diet. Sound similar?

So…Do not read about HCL. Do not talk to doctors. Refer to your craptastic eating plan and see that you aren’t eating anywhere near what you think you are. That is a little girl’s diet.

Once you get more kcal in your diet, and if you still aren’t gaining weight then you can take these morons advice and look into intestine worms and aids and whatever else scapegoat you think the problem is.

The simple fact of the matter is that there is a process. You don’t skip to step C before you complete step A. You are trying to look for a detour before you even find out that your freeway is closed.

Be truthful in your eating habits before you start claiming hormone deficiencies.

Hey dumbass…

Did you even read his diet? If you had you’d realize this kid is not eating enough.

Before he starts worrying about nutrient absorption he needs to get in more calories.

Nothing else needs to be said. If you hear hoof beat, you don’t start thinking “zebras”.

I had the same problem. You need to corrent 2 things.

#1. Eat more.

If you’re not gaining weight at 3000 calories a day, increase your diet to 4000 calories a day. And so on… And so on…

Eating 7000 calories one day a week, and 3000 calories the rest, doesn’t help you. You need to eat consistently.

Eat foods that you enjoy. Your current diet doesn’t look very tasty to me. You can keep your basic meals healthy, but feel free to add some cheat foods as well. Don’t replace the healthy foods with cheat foods, just eat them as well as your normal diet.

As Chicken said, drink a giant glass (or two giant glasses) of milk with every meal (whole milk or chocolate milk). Eat yogurt, juice, and fruit (bananas are good) between meals for snacks. Liquid calories are much easier to consume that solid calories.

#2. Train hard and consistently in the gym.

I don’t gain weight unless it’s muscle mass. I’m a freak. You might be the same kind of freak. I can eat 4000 calories and sit on my ass all day, and I won’t gain fat… But I won’t gain muscle, either. It’s the combination of a huge diet and intense (and consistent) training that will cause you to gain weight.

If you don’t eat enough and don’t train enough, you won’t gain weight. You can’t do one and ignore the other.

If you can eat a fist full of protein, a fist full of carbs and a glass of milk at every meal…we would not be having this discussion.

You have a way with words. You had me at “hello”.
Heh. Like I said, I’m on a fat loss diet right now, so I fantasize about shit like that. Especially on an assed-out low carb day.
wukey wrote:
the low carbs thing has been mentioned to me befor and is a very valid point (do you think they are really that low?), i thought that the flapjacks (which are quite large)and all them baked potatoes would do the trick.

i did post a while back asking how i could increase my carb intake and i’ve added weight gainers and bananas to my diet since then, but my problem is that when i take in more complex carbs my appetite just disapears and i find that i end up missing meals. i can eat simple carbs all day and all night though and they have no effect on my appetite.

I’m reluctant to up my carbs much more because i heard that total calories is more important than macro nutriant ratios, but that might be my last resort.

I think a trip to the doctors is definatly on the cards, apart from my hormone levels is there anything else i should ask for?
have him check your prostate
Boris B wrote:
If you “can’t” gain weight, you simply aren’t eating enough - it’s that simple.
No, it isn’t “that simple”.

It’s the biggest crock of shit ever.

This guy obviously has a medical condition. Telling him to eat more when he’s already eating more, per pound, than anyone else on this site is not going to solve his problem. No 150 lb. person can realistically be expected to eat 5,000 calories a day for years on end. As soon as he stops shoveling food into his mouth, his weight will drop right back down (assuming he can even gain weight on 5k calories). What then? Tell him to keep force feeding himself for the next 15-20 years or stay at 150 forever? Is that your proposed solution?

Clueless neanderthals.

Hormone manipulation is the answer. His hormones are completely fucked up, this is obvious based on his described symptoms. Either his adrenals or thyroid or both are shot, and he needs to fix THAT in order to heal his metabolism and be able to gain weight.

What he posted was a shitload of food for someone who only weighs 150 lbs. His stomach is probably half the size of yours, idiot.

What the fuck were you expecting him to write? “I’m eating 12 big macs a day and can’t go past 150?” If he had written that, you probably would have told him to eat 15.

Unbelievable.
Mike Benfield wrote:
You’re simply not eating nearly as much as you think you are. “Can of tuna and a banana” is a meal someone might eat for weight LOSS.
Are you aware that normal people might take 2-3 days to finish a single can of tuna? They sure don’t buy 5-7 of them every week, I’ll tell you that much.

A full can of tuna and a banana is not a “huge” meal but it’s plenty for a 150 lber.

He is NOT undernourishing himself, period.

Normal people who ate a can of tuna every day would gain weight.
Professor X wrote:
Holy living crap. It took this many posts for someone to finally point that out. Are people just typing so that their avatar looks really nice on the page with everyone else’s? This guy’s diet is less food than many girls I know yet he “can’t gain weight”?

Maybe in 3 more pages…
If you know girls eating more than that, then they must weigh 180 or over…GUARANTEED.

Might be hyperthyroidism. But I actually think the dude is low on insulin. None of his meals seem to be fat + carbs. He’s eating way too clean.

Get some pizza and cheese fries in there, dude. Everyone’s right. It’s a diet problem AND a hormone problem! If you want to gain, insulin is your friend!

Yeah, deal with a health issue by eating tons of crap food.

Great idea!

Only on T-Nation.

One day, you will all look back on what you wrote here and weep…

…or so I’d like to think.
Nominal Prospect wrote:

And just how much do you weigh?

When I was bulking, I’d eat up to 3 lbs of mixed nuts per a week. That was eating clean.

Post-workout, I’d have a 14 oz fatty steak and two cups of wild rice. Or a pound of battered and pan-fried fish and a bottle of wine.

I put on 50 lbs the first year, and 20 lbs the next.

I’d kill a buffet one or two times each week as well. With no attention paid to “making this a protein+carb or protein+fat meal”.

That kind of thinking will keep a person small.

Think like Godzilla instead, and eat everything in your path.

What’s the worst that can happen, you’ll gain weight?

(I’m cutting off 20 lbs of fat now, so that I can see my abs for the first time in my life. 15 down and 5 to go. Eating clean and loving it. With no regrets! Just big muscles and a four-pack, soon to be five or six.)

Read the dates on these threads people.
