Eating But Still Can't Gain Weight

what’s your exercise routine like?
play any sports?

any idea how many calories you’re taking in now? hard for us to figure out without knowing serving size.

I was in the same boat, tracking calories and getting 4,000 cals/day and keeping my exercise to a low enough level not to be burning a ton.

wasn’t gaining any weight.

I’ve since upped it to 4500 cals/day and have put on 3 lbs in a week.

the simple answer is that you’re not eating enough. you just need to figure out where you’re currently at calorie wise and increase it 250-500 cals/day.

what kind of surgery?

umm I caculated it all a while ago, im taking in 3400 cals a day and over 200 g of protein, 300g of carbs, and 82g of fat. Im in cts ovt training and i play hockey once a week and that is the day i eat and extra like 300 cals. I mean im eating so much more than I was before.

eat more!

Hope you are recovering well from your appendectomy.

bananas and peanut butter

I now, I guess I have to eat more but I mean I increased my cals about 1000 in the past few weeks so I mean its alot than I had. Also pb is full of cals but I dont wana have it to much and get a peanut intolerance, do you think that can happen?

If you eat too much of something you can build up food allergies.

There are lots of options though.

A lot of good food has a lot of calories. If not peanuts than other nuts?

Avocados have a lot of calories but good healthy fats.

cheese, olives, lamb.

Maybe you just need to be constantly eating. Olives, cheese, nuts and jerky.

sorry to double post but you can always drink your cals.

Mix your Grow! Whey with half and half or your Metabolic Complete.

V-8 juice is good. Those Naked Juice things are loaded with calories.

what i found works for me:

i eat the same large amounts of food i was eating when my weight was constant, except after almost every single meal i grab a couple handfuls of mixed nuts or couple spoonfuls peanut butter and chase it with a large glass of whole milk. this way i am able to add the extra calories needed to slowly gain weight.

it sounds like you are getting a good amount of protein and calories, but as a 17 year old, your metabolism is probably through the roof and 3400 may just not be enough…

try adding in more healthy fats. Like mentioned nuts (walnuts, pecans, cashews, etc) and even natural PB.

they make almond butter too, but it’s like $10/jar :open_mouth:

you might want to just start out by adding an extra serving of Surge during your workout (if you can afford it).

yea being a teen I deff cant afford that haha

At 17, you dont have a job?

You can save a lot of money if you shop at costco’s, BJ’s, and the like and buy in bulk and just freeze the rest.

Whole milk is an easy way to get in more calories.

No you aren’t.

i think he was answering in response of my Surge double dose suggestion. I work full-time and with all my other supplements, it’s tough to think about doubling up on Surge which is almost $2/serving each and every time you strenously workout

If you ain’t growing, there are overwhelming chances that you’re just not eating enough.

And remember, it’s a long-term endeavor.

Read the response above over and over again.

This isn’t rocket science. Eat enough and you will gain weight.

Now whether it’s muscle or fat will depend on what you eat and how well you train.

That doesn’t look like 3400 calories. Let’s do the math. 200g of Protein = 800 Calories, 300g Carbs = 1200 calores, 82g fat = 738 calories. That’s 2700 calories.

The answer is simple. Add more calories. On top of weight training, and sports, you’re also young enough that you are still growing vertically, so you need to eat, and you can probably get away with not eating 100% clean.

Here’s breakfast:

8 whole eggs, scrambled,
4 pieces of whole wheat toast, with butter and jam
A glass of milk
A glass of juice.

Better than juice, if you have a blender, blend 2 cups of milk, a banana and some frozen berries. That’s about a thousand calories to start your day off.

I tried the bulk thing and i couldnt eat enough with a clean diet, so i decided to stay where i am now. I hated the amount i was eating and it made me feel like shit also. I always was full, i am much better just maintaining now.

If your really up for bulking, you have to eat more than you think. I hope that your very, very hungry lol

Seriously?

come on guys! as a former fat boy (similar to Shugart) i find it ridiculous that you guys can’t eat enough to gain lean mass…track your calories read Shugart’s quality mass diet article…do the opposite of what you’re doing now in the gym (unless you just started a new program)…

most importantly…KEEP YOUR FOODS CLEAN…otherwise your risk instilling bad habits for later in life when your metabolism isn’t so fast…say hello to being skinny fat with a nice potbelly…just like fat dudes have to suck it up when losing weight skinny dudes have to suck it up when they want to gain…

John Berardi has an article somewhere where he said that he had to eat roughly 7-8000 kcals A DAY to gain weight…here is what he ate roughly:

4 packets of oats
12 eggs
4 slices of whole grain toast

~60 gram protein shake
3-4 whole grain bagels slathered with pb

1 lb of lean beef
broccoli

~60 g protein shake
3-4 whole grain bagels slathered with pb

2-3 chicken breasts
green veggies
1 lb of pasta
tomato sauce

~60g protein shake
3-4 whole grain bagels slathered with pb

plus: a few protein bars throughout the day

THAT’S UNREAL!!! NOW IF THAT’S NOT A DIET FOR WEIGHT GAIN I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS!!! but the point is he kept it clean…he only went up to 12% bf from 8% but he gained a ton of lean mass and strength…check out his webpage…

obviously this is not doable for everyone because eating that amount of food adds up to a ton of $$$ per month, but if you’re 17 maybe you can convince your parents to help you with buying that amount of food

well i realize that the simple answer is if your not gaining weight your not eating enough but by upping my cals up about 1000 I was hoping something would happen, also its 3400 ive dont the math a million times. Also i am eating preety much 100% clean so maybe I shouldnt do that. ALso there is no way my rents would buy that much food for me
