Most often I use the internet to determine the calorie/macronutrient breakdown of my foods. However, sometimes I wish I had a book that I could take with me.
Does anyone know of a good calorie/macronutrient reference in book form? The ones I’ve seen usually disagree with what I know to be reliable sources online or just contain crap foods.
Kinetix, there are two books I like. One is by Nutribase, specifically “The NutriBase Nutrition Facts Desk Reference.” They have a number of different versions, but that’s the most comprehensive. The other one I like is “The Corinne T. Netzer Encyclopedia of Food Values.” Once again, she’s got a lot of different versions, but that’s the one you want.
If you go with those titles in hand, you could probably take a look at them in the bookstore to see which one you like best and then order it from a discount book source.
They are both encyclopaedic in nature. And Nutribase has a software version, too, that’s pretty darn cool. Drop Phill a PM and ask him about the software version. I’m giving serious consideration to buying it. It’s quite the useful tool if you’re a PT and design diets for people.
All that aside, the two sources above will provide you with protein, fat, carbs, fiber for different measured amounts of a food source. It has some fast food and brand names, too, which I don’t usually need/use. But I’ve found it to be exceedingly comprehensive where the foods those of us on T-Nation like to eat are concerned.
While doing some T.A. work for a nutrition course I aquired ESHA Nutrition software. This software not only gives me all of the macronutrients, but vitamin and mineral profiles as well.
I just needed a book for when I was on the go. If you’re considering sofware check out this site.
