Bulldog: Working on regaining man card

Are we happy or are we unhappy about this?

Just a observation. Im expecting a bump in my calorie setting starting this coming weekend if the trend continues

Ah. Gotcha.

Bodyweight down and performance up? Sounds like a ā€œRecompositionā€!

Wouldn’t go that far yet… performance id say is up because im not running on a deficit.

I never understood posting pics and asking strangers what your bodyfat might be.

People are too cheap to seek out an actual form of measurement, yet they want to make use of methods that require a detailed amount of measurement.

Which, for sure, makes no sense at all if you run 2-brain cells together, but the desire to save money makes people make poor decisions. I’m actually in the middle of writing a blog post about that very thing.

The other option is people do it because they want to excuse to post physique photos without just flat out saying ā€œI want a compliment on my bodyā€

You’ll not regret buying any of those. Maybe buy a 150 lb one, add l00 lbs sand in beginning, and then add sand over time to fill it to capacity. That way you aren’t wasting $ on l00 lb sand bags. Probably could work up to 250 after awhile.

I was considering doing progress photos. Might reconsider now…

There is, legit, nothing wrong with just plain wanting a compliment, haha. That’s the thing. People are conditioned to believe it’s wrong to be vain or to appreciate their physical success, so, instead, they try to hide it by saying that they’re just looking for a bodyfat estimate.

F that. If you’ve got something worth showing off: show it off. Modesty is overvalued.

I think you should! You’ve been working hard, and it’s fun for everyone when we share the journey. Both inspirational because we’re following the change and reassuring that imperfection is okay for people with work and kids and other competing priorities, as that’s how most of us live. I think the 21-year-old me who worked in a gym would be proud of this version of me, despite my physique being objectively only so-so.

I second this for two reasons (at least). First, progress is so gradual that you don’t actually notice it day to day and when you post and others notice, it gives you some momentum.

Also, posting progress proves that it can be done and can give others motivation to stay the course.

Just my .02 - I find the mirror and pictures posted with the actual body fat to be the most effective method and have gotten pretty good at assessing body fat. I have correlated my own estimates with BIA, caliper, and other methods and am pretty close to the measured body fat.

I look forward to seeing your thoughts in the blog.

Sorry for the derail @bulldog9899

Ah, I wrote more on the notion of trying to save money and, in doing so, spending way more. ā€œThe poverty premiumā€ as it relates to fitness.

The big issue I have with trying a photo to a number is visceral bodyfat. You can have two dudes that look the same degree of lean, but one can have a different number than the other because one dude has more fat between their organs than the other. We know how lean each dude looks: we don’t know what number they look like.

Ahhhh… The skinny fat. Never a good thing.

I am undecided on this. But now you have me thinking about my own vanity. This feels like a good rabbit hole for some self reflection.

  • Well im all for saving money… Plus a good dexa scan is for rich folks. BUT there are options that are more available and cost effect and more reliable than some strangers eye balling a pic online.
  • Oh yeah I agree most of the time guys are posting to have their egos stroked. I recall one guy loosing his shit when people called him high on his %.
  • I fit the the category you mentioned… That being that i can get lean as hell and still carry a good amount of visceral fat.
