Bulking and Pressure?

Hello all,

I am lifting seriously since the month February. I was 147 lbs, now 160 lbs thanks to the articles and forum discutions I’ve been reading avidly. I am currently following the intermediate 5x5 by Rippetoe, seeing appreciable gains in size and strength. My diet may be sub-optimal for bulking. It consists of a protein shake in the morning (banana, oats, olive oil, 2% milk, natural pb, and Isoflex protein), I take fish oil, a multivitamin, and the rest of the meals consists of dairy (milk, cheese) nuts, lean meat, and I don’t forget the veggies. I am 18 years old, lifting 3 times a week, and was on a rowing (2 practices/week) team prior to the end of the semester.

I took my pressure recently and noticed it went quite up (85/146), as where before I was always in the 120ish. Is there something in my diet or exercise program that may cause this? No one in my family has hearth or pressure problems.

what is your salt intake ?

Wow! You must have a superheart if your diastolic is reading 146! I imagine you want the reverse though.

You will need to take another rested reading to see if it comes down and continue taking them. It’s not too far out of the ordinary and it depends on when you took it.

You should always check in the morning on the same day of the week. If you start feeling light-headed then get to a hospital of course, but I don’t really see anything that out of the ordinary (except a indication of prehypertension.)

If you went to the doctor he would just ask if you’ve been feeling tired/light-headed/dizzy/seeing spots, any chest pains or shortness of breath, family history etc. If you answer yes to any of those then they’d follow up with an ECG and take it from there.

It may have been a one off thing but keep checking for a month to see if it comes back and make a log of what you eat (seems like you do that anyway) for the doctor to look over.

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it.

I never gave a look at that. Like I mentionned I eat mostly unprocessed food (maybe a footlong Subway a week), and I don’t salt anything besides my dinner (not that much). The nuts I eat are unsalted, maybe coming from the cheese, but it’s not excessive, mayber 50-80 grams of chedar/day.

Yeah, I’ll take another read today rested. The day before writing this post, it read 141. It’s one of those personnal pressure electronic machine, if that matters. But my friend’s dad and himself have consistent mesure, so it seems legit. I don’t feel lightheaded when working out, or whenever. I’ve finished my finals 1 or so week ago, if stress could be it, but I feel mostly relaxed from having finished. I took my pressure in the afternoon, before diner, if that helps.
