Yes that would work but couldnt you just use a weight and increase the number of reps before jumping 5 pounds??
If you can bench 200 or 500 yes 5 pounds is a smaller increment at 500 than it is at 200 but I think just staying with a weight until you can perform a higher number or reps before you add 5 pounds would also work … but I agree those chains would work.

What’s your point?
And you could make 16 and attach them to the dumbbell handle. Platemates only attach to metal dumbbells so if you use this you can use it on any kind of dumbbell.
my trick for small increments to a bar is to add extra clips - you know - the ones that keep the plates from coming off? They each weigh around a pound, so instead of one a side, I may end up with 2 or 3 before jumping to the next 5 pound plate.
