Brute's Book

Hi Brute.

Yeah I’m doing the box squat thing too to try to fix my form. I’ve also heard that bottom up squats can help too.

Hey Charlie :smiley: Thanks for stopping by :slight_smile: Yep…I gotta try those bottom ups too…so many things… :{

I just love seeing you on video.

My squat has been screwed for a long time (knee cave…argh!). Patience is indeed a virtue, but patience sucks ass.

AGREED!

woah, brute! That’s waaaay wider than I squat even with my increased stance. It looks like your knees disagree with this width! How did the toes out feel? I played around with my squat yesterday thinking of you. I can’t believe how different an inch in or out makes.

KIMBA!!! thanks!

OH MY GOD LULA YEAH. IN all fairness I’ve ignored this shit for a long time…school time sucks.

Arachne!! You think my knees are at a weird angle? Hmm. Well I tried today wide again just with the bar and toes forward, hard to balance. I think I’m ok with wise now…and I got longer legs so it looks ridiculous :{ MAYBE. I’m not even done tinkering :frowning: I don’t even have my stance yet . BLEH.

today
sheiko 37 started on deadlift day
dls 175x5, 205x5 x 2 sets 245x4 x 2 sets, 265x3 x 4 sets.

I’m really trying to work on my deadso form too. All these were set down for a rep which sucks. I gotta work on pulling back and letting the bar rub my shins up.
dls from box-- i figured that meant deficit. I used 25’s to load the bar instead of standing of something
170x5,205x5 x 2 sets, 245x4 x 2 sets, 270x3 x 4 sets.
roman chair 4 sets of 10, ghr attepmts, that shit hurts my quads bad. like 3 sets of 5. I had more in me but MAN it hurts my quads I laid a pad over too

stepmill 20 mins

Brutiful, well I have ridic short shins for my size, so my mechanics are probly all different than yours. Keep zeroing in on that stance. I forgot, did you say you are doing the meet at the end of March?

Brutiful - I (still) like your style !!! (yes, I do still lurk in here  )

Squat stance was nice, knees not so much. When powering out of the hole, tell yourself knees out knees out.
Spread the floor with your feet and force those knees out.

Do you work your abductors and adductors at all?

I really think you can get this wider stance squat down, please remember to stretch and take care of the hip flexors.

Arachene–nah…no meet in march. I’m no where near ANYWHERE now. I asked for the days off and I plan on keepin em so I might pop by and check it out.

POWER!!! :D!!
OK. I gotta get this, and no i haven’t done adductor /abductor work. I WILL NOW.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get used to this whole thing? My plan is just get my stance, get it going, then add 10 pounds or so a week. I’m going to start with whatever wt looks good and I can do.

I dunno. I’m still hunting a improved front squat with sheiko. for most, and and to get my deads pretty. My only hope is to just ingrain the hell out of my cns to a new squat habit and I’ll work on adding wt later. ??

oh. and…

Be prepared for LOTS of vids. And…my frustration too!!

Yayy!!!

Another sign I need the abductor work I think shows in my deads. Here’s today deficit dead my last set of 270 and I was tired. But YES. I pivot those knees in >:{ MAHHHH.

And power are you right about the hip flexors…what I would do for someone who would dig their thumbs into mine right now. Tight. I’m going to try that on myself and see if it helps.

TEXI YEI :)!!!

Oh I subscribed to your youtube channel. LOL

Love the dog assisted pull ups!!

Nigel is no help at all with pullups!!!

Nigel looks super adorable, though!!

Ok, few things I see with your DL. Turn those feet out a little. It’ll help reinforce the knees out. The knees track the toes, afterall.

You’re not “TIGHT” off the floor. Meaning you don’t pull the “slack” out of the bar and your arms before you start to actually pull. If you could work on bracing your body a little more and puling just enough to get that tightness in the bar before you give 100% into getting that weight off the floor, you’ll get more drive out of your legs and avoid straining any soft or connective tissues in the arms. You can see how you dip down then YANK the weight off the floor at the initiation of your deadlift. This is tricky to get yourself to do, but once you do, you’ll get a way smoother pull.

I can’t see what you’re doing at the top, but you can see the bar go up and then come back down to your final lockout position. Are you doing a shrug at the top? Your hips should lockout the lift, not your traps.

Finally, do you feel the gloves are beneficial? I know most people don’t want callouses, but I am seriously anti lifting gloves. This may have been addressed before, but I feel wearing them doesn’t allow your grip to strengthen properly and that definitely has an effect on your lifting. You can only pull what you can hold.

K, long post is long. I know. Sorry!

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!

BRUUUUUTE!!!

ha

Oh, and I’m not a fan of super huge amounts of “corrective” work. Some stuff does need to be done, without a doubt. But as for your knees going in, I think you just need to focus on pushing them out, EVERY DAMN REP! lol

This will get you strong in the movement and allow you more time for bigger things. Just my 2 cents but, I wouldn’t go super crazy with it at the expense of other, more beneficial training you could be doing.

Texi–> That makes a lot of sense. I defiantly have some loose arms there. …which make me squeeze my knees in to help lift off. AND I do tend to trap it up when I get tired at the top of the lift.

Those are some great pointers!!! Its all starting to make sense now!! :D!!! HAMMIES!

AND! The toes out bit is way true…I just recently moved my toes from the full on streight position to slightly out., and it made differance. Toes out more!!

Seriously! Thank you for pointing those things out! Its adding up in my mind as I type this!! :D!!

**Lightbulbs!!

OH and about the gloves, Yeah. I’m keeping em. I don’t mind callouses at all, but at my job I wash my hands constantly and Denver is a dry ass climate. Days before gloves where just too painful after lifting to deal with , bloody cut up hands are killer when you use alchohol and cholohex scrub up patients many times a night.

I am able to lift and dl without them for meets which is fine with me! I could be being a baby…but yeah. OWWIE!

I got your back Brutiful!!

:D!!!
