breaking news on egg whites!

well to me anyways…

I just found out that egg whites only contain 3g’s or protein. What the fuck, i always thought it was 7. This is terrible,. now i have to eag twice as much.

That all depends on the size of the egg. If you’re only getting 3 grams, that’s not a very big egg.

Calorie king read 3g. Per Large Egg White. I guess the yoke has some protein in it.

Approx. half the protein in an egg is in the yolk and the other half is in the white. A “large” white egg has around 6g of protein. If you look on the carton that you buy the eggs it should have the Nutritional Facts label on it somewhere.

OH MY GOD, People! You make me want to cry.

I just eat the whole eggs. Cholesterol is good for you!

Why not just eat the whole egg? It tastes better, fills you up more, and gives you more protein.

egg whites might be the worst thing for gas. ever.

I say let them grow up. Then you’ll have more protein.

Eat the whole egg bro…it’s good for you. I eat 3-4 whole eggs every day.

I can’t eat the whole egg. Just the thought of all that cholesterol going into my body doesn’t sit well with me. Plus i dont mind eating like 12 eggs, it’s only 2 bucks or so.

Why not just eat the yokes? Or how about the whites on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and the yokes on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday? This just leaves Sunday. (Hamsters?)

These are the yokes folks. (Someone was going to say it. I still apologize.)

Seriously many of the diets on T-mag have listed using 1/2 of the eggs whites only, and 1/2 full eggs. Also omega rich eggs are a good choice, especially for boiled eggs.

why not eat the yolks?

calories, that’s why.

If you are trying to get a very high ratio of protein in your diet while limiting calories, eating whole eggs is not going to work for you.

Fortunately, this isn’t breaking news for most of us BUT it is a manageable situation.

Eggs, as i’m sure you know, are dirt cheap. Buy them at Wal-Mart, 5 dozen for $4.65. Might even be cheaper at a wholesaler, don’t know, not one near me.

That’s a whole $0.08 per egg.

Forget the yolk if you are concerned about cholesterol (200mg/yolk is a ton). If you want healthy fats/more calories there are many better alternatives.

Reasons to eat egg whites:

  • one of the most bio-digestable protein sources
  • cook faster w/o the yolk
  • pure protein

On the bio-digestability note, while egg whites may only have 3g protein, from my understanding you digest and use that entire 3g. Where inferior sources, say with 15g protein, some of that will be wasted and not used by your body. (correct me if i’m wrong, I’ve only taken one nutrtion course)

So I say mix those whites up, throw in 12 if you have to, it’s less than a $1 per meal and enjoy your huevos!

By the way, didn’t mean to sound like an ass with that last post. There is tons of information on T-mag that is breaking news to me that many on here have known for ages.

So please do not take offense!

seanc:
When I mentioned just eating yokes, it was a joke. Maybe I should have said, “eat ONLY yokes” to make it more obvious. Hence the word “seriously” after my statements. Speaking of which why didn’t you complain about the hamster statement? These are fat little buggers, especially when deep fat fried. Boy do they scream when you drop them into the fryer. :-p

Info on eggs from The Atkins Cener:

An Egg-cellent Idea
If there could be a perfect food, the nutrient-packed egg would top the list.

If you?ve been following the Atkins Nutritional Approach?, you already know that eggs are a staple?but you may not know about the various vitamins and minerals they provide. But before we look at the good stuff in eggs, let?s dispel your concerns about cholesterol.

Cholesterol: You Can?t Live Without It
First of all, you need to understand that eliminating or cutting back on eggs and other cholesterol-rich foods will not automatically reduce your cholesterol levels. That?s because if you cut back on dietary cholesterol, your body simply makes more so it can perform its various essential duties: insulating nerve fibers, maintaining cell walls, producing vitamin D and manufacturing various hormones and digestive juices. In fact, eating cholesterol-rich eggs may help your liver work less and produce less cholesterol. Study after study suggests that egg consumption can provide numerous other health benefits and that, in fact, eating eggs does not contribute to high cholesterol levels:

In one clinical study, 24 adults who added two eggs to their daily diet over a six-week period increased their total cholesterol by only 4 percent; meanwhile, their HDL (?good? cholesterol) rose by 10 percent1.
A Michigan State University study indicated that ?egg consumption made important nutritional contributions to the American diet, and was not associated with high serum cholesterol concentrations.?2
Frank Hu, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., and his team from the Harvard School of Public Health noted that, after adjusting for age, smoking and other risk factors, there was no evidence of an association between eating whole eggs and the risk of heart disease or stroke in men or women3.
Researchers at the University of Tennessee found no association between egg consumption and the risk of coronary heart disease in nondiabetic men and women4

Nutrient Powerhouses
Moreover, if you?ve been avoiding eggs or tossing the yolks because you?re concerned about cholesterol, you?re also missing out on a host of important nutrients. Here are the facts:

Egg yolks are a superior source of carotenoids, which can lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration, an eye disease, by 43 percent5
Eggs have choline, which can help lower cholesterol, and scientists speculate that it improves memory and learning capacity. Choline is also used to make a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, a chemical substance that allows your nervous system to send and receive nerve impulses.
Along with folic acid and vitamin B6, eggs contain vitamin B12, which helps reduce and remove homocysteine, an amino acid that, at elevated levels, increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Organic gardeners use crushed eggshells, a rich source of calcium, to cultivate rich soil and healthy plants. But the content of the egg itself?specifically, the yolk?is also rich in calcium.
Your body needs zinc, found in eggs , to produce more than 200 enzymes, some of which are essential to the immune system. Recent research from Japanese scientists also indicates a relationship between zinc deficiency and learning impairment6.
Whole eggs are rich in dietary sulfur, which can reduce inflammation and is also beneficial in detoxification and antioxidant protection.
Magnesium found in eggs can help with a number of health problems, such as migraines and fibromyalgia. Practitioners at The Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine use this mineral, along with a controlled carbohydrate program, to treat high blood pressure.

Other vitamins and minerals available in whole eggs include vitamin A (which makes the yolk bright yellow); vitamins D, E and K; and iron, riboflavin, niacin, potassium, sodium and lipoproteins?all of which are essential to a healthy diet. So relax and enjoy your scrambled eggs and omelets, knowing that not only are they excellent controlled carb foods for followers of the Atkins plan, but unlike carbohydrate-laden breads and cereals, they?re actually good for your health.

Try the new Southwestern Egg Beaters. They are great. No fat or C.

God is dead… er, Atkins I mean… so fuck him…

I praise high-protein diets, but if you care about how you look, high-fat don’t cut it, at least certain types of fats…

Like was said before, eat your whites, but it seems like everyone’s so concerned with their damn weight. I’m not fat and I eat whole eggs sometimes or mix them with egg whites or use them with shakes or eat the whites with amino acid supps, or whatever… then again I’m one of those wierd people who wants to pack on muscle, not just be ‘ripped’ year-round so you can see my abs cause I’m thin and have no muscle, therefore I look ‘ripped’-concentration camp-style because my bodyfat is so goddamn low…

I’m so sick of assholes who talk about ‘ripped’ this and ‘shredded’ that. Screw that noise… I wanna look like I work out, look being the key phrase, ‘cause for the life of me, most the jerks runnin’ around the gym may have those visible abs and that whole gaunt Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday ‘fitness mag’ cover/geisha boy look down skippy, but you take any one of those dudes outthe gym for a month and don’t exercise 'em or feed 'em and I promise you they still look the same… like dudes who work out and don’t look like they do, and what’s the point in that?

But yeah, off-topic grumblings aside, eat egg whites or eat ‘em whole… just eat the bastards, and keep lifting hard or start if you don’t already, and quit bitching about a little freakin’ fat sometimes as if you’re competing in the Little Mister Hot Buns contest tomorrow down at the Bam-Bam Lounge’s all-male fitness model revue/convention/gang-bang…

Face it… popular image of health ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. Jared is a fat ass no matter how much Subway he eats and staples he adds to his stomach. Doing more cardio than actual weightlifting makes you a woman, and abs will show if you stop eating the wrong crap. No results you say? Progress is stalling you say? Try eating eight healthy meals a day and putting away the ankleweights…

I eat 36 whole eggs per week, mostly scrambled ones at breakfest. I’m 166 lbs at 8% right now at 5’7" with a 6.5" wrist for reference. I wouldn’t call myself “shredded” but I’m fairly decent looking. I drink milk like it’s going out of style too and eat them there chickens as well not to mention lots of that chicken from the sea. Steak and other red meat goes down the gullet about twice per week. My cholesterol was 124 at last check. I really think that most of the guys on this forum read too much. I’m beginning to develop a great appreciation for Goldberg’s attitude. Great guy ol’ Goldie!!
