BP Journey: From Under 200 to 500

My buddy’s first attempt @ 675

With high weight is high risk. Ive seen BPers get injured with lower weight as well. Proper form and technique is everything.

Read anything written by big bencher and personal trainer Mike Westerdal. Westerdal is a bench press expert and has help many professional bench pressers break through bench press plateaus and increase their bench press. No BS or guesswork. Just good, solid method, technique and advice. T

You’re probably not after 15 reps of 315 but posting this anyway.

I would also caution you to not to flare your arms out at a 90 degree angle, but keep them more positioned at 45. This will keep excessive strain off of your shoulder area and prevent potential damage in the shoulder area later on down the road. If at all possible, pull your arms and a bit more and try to focus your lift with your triceps a bit more. It looks to me like your arms around a bit wide which, of course creates a higher risk of injury. T

Hey thanks T. Bringing my arms in a bit more is something Ive been working on. Its like training the muscle all over again. I did have a bit of a complication as you say a couple of years ago as I was placing the bar too high when touching the chest. Thanks again for the input.

Bench. Straight from the Master himself. None other than Tate. Enjoy.

Get rid of that shit you are laying on ASAP. Notice how low the bench is on the Tate video. There is no way in hell you can have good form that high in the air.

That’s Mr. Blacklabel to you.

No way man. I want Black label in here. He is doing a great job rubbing my balls. Hey BL move it to the left a bit more. Yeah…thats it. Good boy.

Duly noted, I loled… honest.

Tate is no doubt the pro. Westerdal, on the otherhand has an approach that is more personable in my estimation. I’m not knocking Dave at all. T

That may be true, but Tate has produced RESULTS like no other. Westerdal does some great lifts though.

Just got done doing back. Started off doing ample warm-up for bent over rows. I did five sets of eight reps with 275 pounds. I know that’s pitiful. However, I could feel my lower back beginning to feel a bit of a tingle. It kind of spooked me a bit. So as Dixie said I need to get some bigger balls (lol…). Anyway, 275 without support was like jumping off the end of the pier for me and admittedly I was a bit spooked. However, I adjust pretty quickly and feel that I can start doing nonsupported bent over rows with over 300 pretty soon. That is pure speculation. However, I know that my body rapidly adapts when forced to do so.

I’m out of here for the rest of the day. I have some scheduled depositions the rest of the afternoon.

Later Y’all,

Honestly it all depends on how much body English you use. A strict(er) 275 for 8 isn’t bad.

It makes me feel good that I’m close to this one.

That’s not too far behind me. I rep a 310-15 for 8. Really, for starters that is above average. Bench needs to get beyond average to match his BP amounts. Or he’ll probably be stuck.

^^^was that Sebastian Burns as the liftoff man?

Man I dont know. He looks like he could up a few eh?

As much as I like Dave Tate and appreciate his instruction, I’m not sure his advice on the bench press applies to the average raw bencher. Tucking the elbows to the degree he recommends has never worked for me or anyone I know that benches raw, but rather would be more beneficial to a geared lifter.

Plus, a lot of his older videos preach against benching in an arc, which I think is just silly. Abbreviated version: if you want advice on raw benching, get it from raw benchers.

so what happened to this guy? did i miss something? fake weights?
