Am I reading correctly that you think it is safer to bench in a smith rack than with free weights? I don’t understand this at all…what exactly would you do if you dropped the weight on your chest, since you would be pinned an unable to lift it off to the side or roll out from under it?[/quote]

Yes, actually, I do think it is safer as my free weights don’t have any safety catches at all. At least with the Smith rack if I go to failure which I usually do there are safety catches at the bottom that will not allow the bar to go beyond my chest height. Something I cannot do free weight until I get a power rack. I live in a rural community and the closest gym is way out of the city about 60 minutes away. Thus, my plight. I don’t use Smith rack because I necessarily want to, however, if I’m wanting to go to failure it’s my only option until I purchase more equipment. I have already fractured my sternum with 380 pounds about a year ago and have no intention of doing that again.
I know that sucks, however, for me that’s just the way it Tee I Iz right now

Dixie,
405 raw is a good lift. Can you upload the video to this thread so I can study your form? I’m a visual learner. I’m sure you can rep 505 for three as well at 7 1/2" like I can. That would be great if you could post that to this thread too. I’m sure your form is much better than mine in the above video.

I have a photo of the lift on my training log, you can see my form somewhat on that. I do not own a video camera, but I can tell you that I have tried to make my form identical to what Dave Tate discusses on his “6 week Bench Cure” (or a title somewhere along those lines). I would point you to that article/video rather than my own, and would also point you to Meat’s many, many bench videos.

Bummer on not being able to upload your video. Do you have any pictures of repping 505 from (at or pretty close to) the halfway point for three reps? I think if I can position myself through studying your form I can probably do more. Right now I am just speculating.

Hey Yall,
If any of you could upload your three reps at 505 from the halfway point videos I would really appreciate it. I’d like to see your form. I saw Christian Thib do that but am not sure of the weight he was using.
Thanks for all of your input.

My bench is not as good as yours and I wasn’t planning on giving you any advice. I’m just a fan of good lifting videos.
Bench…are you doing a floor press? Why not get on a bench so you can get leg drive?
Edit: I just watched your video again…it would seem the pulling stands you’re benching from are non adjustable so you are more or less forced to bench this way? IDK…
I noticed that when you pressed the weight plates lacked about an inch from clearing the pulling stands. I went and measured this on a plate. It was about 7" like you said. This is about a 5 board press equivalent. I’ll go ahead and throw this out since you asked other advice givers their stats. I have 5 bd pressed 545 raw for a triple. Pressed 455 on a 2 bd and am flirting with a 405 paused off the chest Raw bench. I have recently done a Raw 495 reverse band press for a double (couldn’t quite lock out that 3rd rep on that day)
I will say that doing dead benches with 505 is pretty freaking good! Hey without all that “need a video” which would be cool, go buy yourself a power rack or something that you can do proper benches in. That will help get you your goals. Partial rep ranges will only get you so far. good luck man!

Hey SD Yes this is a floor press. I didnt know a person could do this until I saw Christian Thibadeux (or however you spell his last name…lol!) do some heavy reps this way. I cant get on a free weight on a ceonventional bench yet as I do not have a cage. Someone recommended a cage in this thread and I am goiing to go in that direction for the sake of safety. As stated above I fractured by sternum with 380 about a year ago because I have no safety catches :-# man that hurt like no other not to mention scare the living crap out of me. Im sure any amount of 400 would not feel much better…lol!
So for now it is reps with 505 (and up) for three from the floor when doing really heavy. Id like to live longer than 45
Thanks for your response SD

Dude you rock. You are the only one who has given an intelligent response without blowing a cum wad all over this thread.
I’m thinking about asking anyone in this thread to upoload thier 505 for three reps at the halfway point before listening to any recommendations. Im not trying to be an A hole. Im just trying to eliminate the BS.
Im going to continue to decrease the distance between my chest and the bar by laying on 1" plywood on the floor a layer at a time (next week 2" then 3" then 5" and so on) until I am doing a dead bench 505 raw. Right now I am repping about 7 1/2 inches at least, then 8 1/2" then 9 1/2" then 10 1/2" then 12 1/2" then a full range lift as my reach is only 15" or so.
Ive had people recommend repping lower weights or do a 5/3/1, which is ok. But I feel that repping lower weights fast and explosive is a sure way to get no where in a hurry. If I do not challenge my muscles and nervous system to response to an impossible weight and freak my body out in order to adapt, then I will never break that barrier.
Thanks man. Your recommendations are officially welcome here.

since my response wasn’t intelligent…here’s some of my lifts
bench full ROM 495x2
reverse grip- long pause 460x1
foam press- 565 x 1
full ROM bench 520x1
flat back, feet up , paused 475x1
reverse band bench press 725x1
full ROM bench press 455x4
decline bench 405x14
bench press 225x50
bench press 315x21
paused incline barbell bench press 455x1
decline bench press 545x1 paused
bench press 405x10
Excellent.
Correction – your responses were intelligent (I wasnt referring to you) and your lifts are impressive. Thanks for posting this.
BTW a 455 incline is insane. Nice job.
How much do you weigh? I only weigh 210 and am naturally skinny
A curse for a lifter.

Also your handling of 405 x 10 was pretty killer too. Nice job

I missed this one: reverse band bench press 725x1
That was friggin awesome.
You belong in a Dave Tate video Dude.
Thats crazy weight man. You make a dude like me want to go back to my impressive pink dumbells LOL!!!
Well done.

i weigh anywhere between 250-260.
i know you are new around these boards so be careful throwing around blanket statements. there are many people here that know what they are talking about. i’ve been competing in bodybuilding and powerlifting for over 20 years. I’m going to repeat what i said, if you are looking for help i always start with a full ROM video to know where you are starting from. your plan to slowly increase the ROM isn’t anything new and really doesn’t address many of the things that will need to be done to get a big bench. you always start with form, then you determine weaknesses either form or muscular.
i spend most of my time on these boards helping people to correct form issues. no amount of supramaximal work will get you where you want to be without having all your bases covered.

Hey Thanks. You bet. I will be video taping my 465 bench full ROM soon. Those were some pretty awesome lifts that you posted for sure. 20 years is a long time. Im only a 3 year old lifter and a 210 lb beginner. Pretty scrawney for powerlifting
–Bench
Dude, if you want to hit that target it is doable but you need a proper plan. In your full range bench, what is your bar speed like? What would you say your weakest part of the lift is? Off the chest, in the middle, or at the lockout? Do you do any speed/band work at all?

Full ROM 465 lb RAW. Against my better judgment I did this by myself at my house without a spotter. I know my form has to stink. Id still like to see some of these other guys (ie Dixie) put up a video too. So far I see maraudermeat with a mega impressive 720 x 1.

Nobody else needs to post a video except the OP, if someone wants to brag about their numbers they can start their own thread for it or use the PR thread. You started this thread claiming to have an impressive lift of 465 yet posted a video of something completely different.
