Jim,
I’m substituting my 5x10 BBB work on squat with box squats
I’m a raw lifter and know you have said before that box squats work better for geared lifting
I basically put box squats in to give my glutes and hamstrings more work to help my regular squat and deadlift , from what I’ve researched and seen most take a quite wide stance
Will this wide stance carry over well to my regular more narrow squat and conventional stance deadlift? Or is it best to try to do the same stance for all the movements
There is really no way to know if it will carry over or not. My guess is that it won’t. The box squat tends to take away the ability to rebound out of the hole for raw squatters in my experience. You have a safety net in the box being there, so your form/mind set changes to reflect that safety, which doesn’t help for the regular squat.
Also, if you are squatting correctly, your hams and glutes are likely getting enough work already.
There is nothing wrong with giving this idea a go, though. Just make sure that you are giving maximum effort and dedication to the main work sets.
In general, it has been my experience that box squats carry over better to working with gear. However, a lot has to do with how you do them.
You do not need to take a wide stance; take the stance you normally take. Once you sit on the box, stay extremely tight and then squat up. Also, be sure that the form is the same as a regular squat, too.
This is no guarantee that it will work but it will increase your chances.
