The modifications i mentioned are in that article.
Good to know about making one, I’ll probably end up buying though, to be honest. I’m a bit conflicted, the nicer ones that get heavy (ironmaster) are a lot of money, as are individual ones. Not sure how well cheaper adjustable ones (Titan, bells of steel, Rep) work but it looks like there are some decent options there (12-32kg) for an okay price.
@Bagsy what bell did you end up with? Was it a Titan one?
In any case, I’ve been throwing some swings in pretty regularly when I go to the gym and it lights up my back side as well as providing some conditioning, can imagine doing 10k of the them is going to do amazing things.
I have the 12-32 kg adjustable bell from Titan. It’s not the highest quality product, but it works. I am thinking about getting another adjustable one, probably from Titan also. I know there’s another more respectable company or two that offers a 12-32 kg one, but their names slip my mind right now.
The paint chips everywhere, and sometimes the two halves of the bell get stuck when I try to load it to maximum or near maximum capacity. Very frustrating when that happens, but maybe that’s more my own fault.
@heretolog I just bought a single 24kg from titan, fairly inexpensive and it’s the weight that’s called for in the program. I figured having that one, as opposed to home made, would be better for the program so I’m not worrying about it falling apart in my hands mid swing. I’ll still use my home made one for other conditioning stuff though. Probably keep it on the lighter side.
I saw a few adjustable ones from titan, probably the one @Bagsy is referring to but it was a bit more money than I’d want to spend. It’s probably much more bang for your buck, but I opted against it for the 24kg.
I’ll dig through the article you sent, I haven’t seen that one yet thanks dude!
I didn’t end up lifting yesterday, but was very active all day. I spent 7 hours cutting down tree limbs and bushes and carrying/dragging them on a tarp to the back yard. Also, my neighbor and I cut down a pretty large ash tree that I have cut up and need to get rid of as well.
I’d like to get some lifting in today if I can get enough stuff done around the house at a decent time.
With Ironmaster, it’s worth considering that you’re effectively buying a whole set of equipment, because everything interlocks with everything else. They’re like meathead legos. I have Ironmaster kettlebell handles, dumbbells handles and a weight vest: they all take the same plates and locking screws, so I’ve slashed the need for separate DB weights, KB weights and weight vest weights.
The cost definitely is high on the upfront, and availability is scarce, but it can pay off in the end. If nothing else, worth keeping an eye peeled on facebook market.
But there’s also something to be said about a quality fixed weight bell. It’s nice to just have something “ready to go”.
Yea, that definitely makes sense, appreciate the input. They’re currently out of stock but I can see the appeal of using them interchangeably. It looks like they sell separate locking screws for KB and DBs, are those interchangeable?
I almost pulled the trigger on an adjustable bell from Bells of Steel but saw an FB marketplace seller with 3 rogue bells (15kg, 24, 32) for 200 which got me thinking that might be a better option, only problem is they’re an hour away.
Spent 4 more hours cutting and hauling out trees yesterday. My lower back was feeling really stiff and shitty after being bent over with a chainsaw for a couple hours, so I opted to take it easy last night. I will be lifting today after work though.
It was actually a great conditioning session. Lots of tarp dragging, pick and front carry of some large pieces of wood to the back yard (250’ ish) and a lot of lifting logs onto a tailgate.
On another note, I think I’m zeroing in on the main cause of my slight step back in lifting. Wifey and I have been talking seriously about moving out of our house the past couple months. That, in turn, puts a lot of pressure on us to feel like we have to be working during 100% of our free time to get the house in order and fixed up well enough to be sold. We spoke at length about it the past few days and came to the realization that while we still want to move, now just isn’t the right time. We’re not close enough to being done remodeling that we would be able to list the house in a reasonable timeframe without making some huge sacrifices both financially and in regards to our wellbeing.
This should take some pressure off of us and allow us to start enjoying life again. We’ve both been very busy lately and being able to sit down and talk through what we’re doing has helped us immensely.
I also think this new job has been having a strange effect on me. I’m no longer on call 24/7. I need to learn how to relax and have some down time. It’s been over two years of needing to be redlining all day every day, and I have just forgotten how to unwind. I get very antsy and irritable when I am not productive, which isn’t really who I am. “Idle hands” and all that, but being able to enjoy life is extremely important. The work will always be there, friends and family won’t be.
This is definitely what messes with me. My wife has been making comments more and more about how I don’t know how to relax. Even when I’m doing nothing my leg is bouncing or I’m tapping my fingers. She says I always look like I’m uncomfortable if I’m just sitting still.
I never thought that I’d have to learn how to chill out, haha. I’m assuming a lot of it has to do with residual stress from the past few years. I don’t think it just shuts off like a light switch… I still just need time to “come down” and allow my brain and body to recover from all the crap it’s been through.
I think this is a prevailing trait among lifters. Don’t know if it’s why a lot of us turn to training, or if it comes along with training and the changes in mindset it forces.
I dunno honestly. I’ve known a LOT of slobs that just lived at the gym. They’d beg for money on social media or find a sugar daddy, meals would be prepared by outside services, etc. But it’s a bit of a selection bias: the dudes that were “blessed” enough to have gains come easily like that aren’t online trying to find better ways to train, so you don’t end up interacting with them.
For this degree of self-selection, I’d say so. @tlgains has shown the transformative process as well.
Once I was watching a movie wjth a guy and was using my pepper spray as a fidget toy… thankfully nothing bad happened but that was definitely not my brightest moment
