I’m definitely a very lucky man haha.
Conditioning
Pretty much every day I’m not lifting I’m doing a 2 mike walk with the dog after work or early AM on weekends. Haven’t mentioned it because it’s become such a normal thing.
5 rounds of
10 empty log viper press
6 sandbag to shoulder (120lb bag, very floppy, switch shoulder every rep)
10 BPA
Not quite the conditioning effect I was going for… a little bit more intense than I would’ve liked, but I’m sweating my ass off and breathing heavy so I’ll count it as a win.
So I downloaded a spreadsheet of both BtM and BBBB and plugged my current/most recently tested numbers in. Both programs seem difficult, but do-able… especially in the shadow of deepwater.
I will, as of right now, commit to this setup-
6 week DW Intermediate
Directly into
8 week peak/strength block (obtain max triples on squat, DL, bench, OHP max to be calculated)
Slight deload on S,B,P/1 week DL max test
BBBB
Deload
BtM
Deload
DW beginner
DW Intermediate
I’ll have to get a game plan together for slotting in conditioning on 531, but there’s plenty of time for that. I’m excited about running this and I’m ready for some serious strength gains.
I’ll do a large update with pics and text at the end of intermediate. Until then, just have to keep the focus on getting through these next 6 weeks.
Absolutely excited to see how this all unfolds. Such a fan of this log. You planning on keeping the Deep Water style nutrition through it all?
Absolutely, I feel like there isn’t any other way to eat at this point haha.
I actually may drop the preworkout carbs as well after the last bag and a half are gone.
I really, really, REALLY want to believe in carbs. SO many authors are talking about how important they are. They’re so super yummy and easy and cheap…and they just keep not seeming important. I swore I was going to employ them in this 7 week fat loss cycle…and it just never happened. With all the quality nutrition you’ll have going through you, you may find the same too.
That’s what I’ve noticed over these past 6 weeks or so as well… I haven’t noticed any substantial increase in energy, recovery or a decrease in DOMs. I feel about as recovered as I did the first time through.
The one thing I’m not absolutely sure about is muscle mass… Because short of getting a very accurate scan, how do you measure that? And who’s to say I wouldn’t have gained X amount of mass without the carbs?
I have read quite a few articles lately that say the same as what you wrote- carbs are as important as protein when it comes to building muscle and strength… Personally, I haven’t seen or felt it. I’m obviously very VERY far from being an outlier or even impressive when it comes to muscle mass or strength, so my word doesn’t mean nearly as much as, let’s say, yours or Jon Andersen’s, but I fully subscribe to the Deepwater method of eating. I have noticed zero downsides from cutting carbs. Actually quite the opposite. I’ve lost fat, gained muscle mass, gained strength, and maintained/lost weight.
I DO imagine that, once you start adding insulin manipulation into the mix, carbs become super valuable…and that’s a dirty little secret that isn’t mentioned. People wanna talk steroids steroids steroids, but really, those are pretty predictable in how they work and what they do. It’s all this OTHER stuff that is really game changing.
Totally with you too. Love cutting out the carbs, because now it means more fats, and once I figured out the RIGHT fats to add, I really saw some magic.
I’m wondering. Is there anything WRONG with having carbs even though you don’t train hard enough to NEED them?
I’m personally satisfied not eating them, but I get very resistant when I’m told I CAN’T or MUST do something
Attaching morality to eating is how you develop a damaged relationship with food.
The boiler torture
I’ll be totally honest and say I’m not sure what you mean by insulin manipulation. Are you meaning carb timing? Carb intake in addition to steroids?
See, this is where I become absolutely lost (even more than I typically am). I am honestly so disconnected from the “scene” and sports/strength sports/optimizing performance that basically all of it flies far above my head. I don’t know what TRT is, which steroids do what (or even the names of them) or anything related to any of it haha.
See above, haha. I’m the wrong person to ask. I just know what works for me. In my personal experience, I was just trying different things while running 531 a year/1.5 years or so ago. I blew up to 215ish, slamming carbs nonstop, didn’t gain much strength. I have always had inflammation issues in my joints, specifically in my elbows/forearms/wrists, and once I started restricting carbs it was almost immediate relief. I used to wake up in the middle of the night (typically during the time when I was roofing… lots of carbs and alcohol) with shooting pain up my forearms and wrists, unable to move my arms. It was like my arms fell asleep and someone was shoving hot pokers into them. It legitimately drove me to tears a few times.
It just so happened that Jon Andersen and pwn both eat in a very similar way to the style I was gravitating towards anyway. So, I decided to just get as close to Jon’s guidelines as possible, while allowing myself enough leeway to gain/maintain weight, but also recover. Both pwn and flap had told me that you need to EAT to run DW, so that’s what I did. Lots of meat, a decent amount of vegetables.
So basically that entire wall of text was to say… I just do whatever makes ME feel and perform the best. At this point, low carb is it. Other people can get away with eating carbs, but I run into issues that physically screw me up beyond just lifting.
I mean the manipulation of actual insulin. Bodybuilders have taken to injecting insulin as a means to improve nutrient partitioning, which allow for significantly larger intake/uptake of carbs and producing muscle with minimal fat gain. It’s not steroids: it’s actual insulin.
This came about in the 90s-2000s, which is where you can see the “mass monsters” era coming forward. We figured out steriods around the 50s/60s, and dudes got bigger in that time, but things changed radically when insulin manipulation came into play…and a lot more people started dying.
I’m only vaguely aware of the science behind this stuff, bu it’s useful to know just to kinda know where info is coming from. Similar to how reading a lot of Dave Tate’s early 2000s stuff, it was helpful to understand he was talking about geared lifting vs raw.
I was under the impression you were talking about timing carbs around workouts haha. I guess you’re right, I likely read all of the “carbs=good” from professional/competitive sources. I should definitely be more aware of where I’m getting my information from.
And again, I would have had no idea. I really do wear rose colored glasses when it comes to this stuff.
First shipment of piedmontese came in… This shit looks incredible. I cooked up a Bavette tonight to take it for a test run. It was outstanding.
These are the only performance enhancers I want.
Hell yeah dude! Glad you enjoyed it.
Deepwater Intermediate
W1D1
Squat 10x10 at 275lb
DL 3x10 at 185lb
SS
(Real) Back extensions 5x10
(Last two sets 1 min rest)
Planks and sit ups
4 mins rest on squats. I’m 99.99% sure I’ve been fighting off a cold for the past week. I’ve had multiple negative cov tests, but I can tell when something’s not right in my body. Digestion is off, headaches (which I never get), and just general fatigue. On top of that, lots and lots of weighted walks up and down stairs today which was not fun.
This is typical to how my sicknesses go… a week of feeling “off” and it either
1). Goes away
2). Continue feeling off, but not shitty, for 1-2 weeks
3). Feel like complete garbage for 1-2 days, then back to life as normal.
Having a burrito tonight with a flour tortilla since I haven’t had one in a while. Cut back preworkout carbs to 1/4 of what is directed, which I’m planning on continuing with until the bags are gone.
Also… my heeled lifting shoes are in pieces. Time for a new pair.
I’m definitely a fan of the whole “all bets are off when sick” thing. Jon has even expressed a similar sentiment: eating the demon carbs when recovering from surgery and just needing calories. Burritos are proven to be extra anabolic due to the amiño acids.
Hope you feel better soon boilerman. I hate colds so much, they piss me off. Ever have hot ginger tea with honey and lemon?
Yeah man, they’re the worst. It’s not quite a cold yet, but I’m pretty in tune with feeling good and not feeling normal, and I’m definitely less than 100%. I’ve never had real tea before, to be honest. I think my wife does something similar to what you suggested when she is under the weather though.
lol, I’m happy to have the DW crew behind me for support in burrito inhalation
