Aside from supplements, another factor that fucks with teenagers heads is the Magazine covers that promise big chest and arms in 6 weeks, and show some guy who took 10-15 years to build his physique. Naturally when they don’t see any change they get frustrated and think they either need supplements, some kind of magic routine, or start making excuses for themselves, thinking they are hard-gainers, etc.
If you’re 15 or 16 years old and just getting started now, you’re not going to be in awesome shape by the time prom or that summer trip to the beach rolls around. But if you work hard, and stay with it, by the time you head off to college you will be in badass shape.
Im 16 too, and i can Relate myself to the Bodybuilder 30 years ago bearly starting out… Ive thought about Supplements but havent gotten none thanks to the advice from the guys at the gym… Another Reason why is im POOR basically and its hard enough helping to pay the rent with a full time job… So i hope i can Gain some serious gains without these kinda drugs for a good pursue into a Bb-career.

its funny how 30 years ago bodybuilders were self motvated and did whatever it takes to get bigger and stonger while trying to keep and mantain their gains. now in 2008 it seems as teenagers as young as 14 and 15 years old are relying on supplements such as testosterone boosters and pre workout energy drinks to keep them engergized. Apparently these kids have not been informed that their test levels are higher then ever and when it really comes down to it, bodybuilding is really defined as how self motivated and determined you are. I at 16 years old relized that the healthier and more i eat (chicken, brown rice, tuna, eggs, steak… etc.) determines my gains.
This is beacuse i have an extremely fast metabolism and need to eat 6 meals a day in order to not loose weight. in my eyes 50 % of bodybuilding is your eating habits. for example how many times a day you eat and exactly what you are eating. Then when i go to the gym i see 14 year olds on alphamale overtraining their biceps meanwhile they ate a snickers and a bag of chips for lunch. the kid came up to me and shows me his new supplemts he ordered online with a huge grin on his face, he shows me his Alpha Male and nitric oxide pills to give him a pre workout pump and he says dylan this shit is gunna get me jacked. stupid generalization. First off you are comparing older generation bodybuilders to 14 and 15 year olds today. of course there is going to be a difference. “Them damn kids of today are so stupid” is the most ridiculous stupid generalization i’ve ever heard.
You know what that description of the 15 year old describes to me? EVERY FIFTEEN YEAR OLD EVER IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. We were allllll young and impressionable and stupid as fifteen year olds, and the fifteens year olds of today are no less stupid than fifteen year olds of thirty years ago. You know what i’ve noticed…EVERY age group of parents (from 30s to 40s) ALWAYS says man you kids now a days have so little morals. Back in my day… it bullshit.
Every generation thinks the next generation is more corrupt than there’s was when they were young. This is not true, its just we are older now and see the world for how it really is. NOt that i’m not saying kids aren’t stupid, i’m just saying don’t say kids of thirty years ago are less stupid than the current generation. Thank you.
I gotta print this thread to some college buddies. NOExplode or whatever isn’t gonna help you shit if you’re doing tricep kickbacks and eating McDs for post workout.

You’re right that all 15 year olds are retarded. However, 30 years ago there weren’t 50 different bodybuilding rags on the newstand shelf, supplement companies selling garbage, bosu balls, etc. If a kid wanted to build muscle, the only choice he had was hit the iron, and pound the steak and eggs. Granted, it was hard to find good information, but there wasn’t as much bullshit to sift through, nor as many ready made excuses for failure for them to fall back on.
Eh, it’s true.
I started lifting when I was 18, and the first thing my brain thought of was what sups I needed. I probably wasted 6 months not eating enough, and just relying on my p/wo shakes. Thankfully, I was on some other forum and made some friends that explained everything properly.
Honestly though, it’s all the media. When you got the pros all being sponsored by different companies it’s hard not to not buy the stuff when you’re just starting out. You can’t really blame the kids, because they’re just kids… Unless they have somebody with them who doesn’t make a profile and actually cares about the kid then you KNOW that he is gonna go out and buy $100 in protein powders before he even STARTS working out.
It’s a sad truth, but like anything in life… you live and learn, be it the hard (and sometimes expensive) or easy way.
Supplements only allow you to train harder - they do not magically build muscle.
They are also ineffective if your diet is shit.
They’re are that extra 10% if you want it.

I agree that there’s a lot more bullshit going around nowadays, but even when times were simpler, some level of misinformation still existed.
As a young guy, the thing that drives me fucking crazy is this; as much information as there is, people can’t seem to just put the effort in and look around them. If you’re 15-20 right now, you grew up along with the INTERNET! The greatest source of free information ever to exist! If the information on T-Nation existed only in books, and I had to scour the library for it, I may never have found it. People here pride themselves as being some sort of underground secret society, but you can find this site easily on a search engine, and it’s getting more popular. Did I mention that it’s FREE??
Even worse, newbies come on here all the time without having read the articles/posts and say dumb shit. You went on your computer already, you lucked out enough to (hopefully) skip over bodybuilding.com, you went through the trouble to make an account… yet you left the free article library untouched? Do you want the Biotest staff to lift the weights for you, blend up your food for you and feed it to you while they make airplane noises and motions with the spoon? Could it possibly get any easier? Being knowlegable is 99% of the battle and so many just surrender. I cannot understand it for the life of me.
/semi-rant off.

hahahahaah, classic ![]()
But seriously, if one doesn’t read for themself and has everything done for them , not much progress will be made. That knowledge won’t be retained; easy come, easy go. I went to the extreme of studying the anatomy of the body. I learned what each muscle did, how it functioned and even studied the nervous system… All free, on wikipedia. Grey’s anatomy is the shit.
If i had the chance/opportunity, I’d go to school, learn Kinesiology & master nutrition. All for self knowledge, not for the money. In fact, i wouldn’t even practice, all this just to know how to better myself.
–The human body is one amazing machine.

The other day I was at GNC buying some protein and these two kids that were probably 15 or 16 were buying NOExplode. I thought to myself… “man if you are that age and you need to take a supplement for energy then you are going to be FUCKED by the time you are 30”.

dude ur so right… a good friend of mine is always on a preworkout supplement like noexplode nanovapor or Spike and he claims he cannot workout without it. and he just turned 16. the other day he ran out of nanovapor and he said he couldn’t workout so he took the day off. if you ask me all those preworkout sups ar garbage and are more of a mental pump then a physical.
Those bastards at GNC! -lol They should have nametags that read “just because I work here doesn’t mean I have any knowledge of nutrition or proper training methodologies, in fact, it would be a safe assumption that I don’t”.
I swear, every employee at the GNC by me looks malnourished and sickly, and on one of those rare occassions I pop in (people seem to think I want GNC gift certificates for my birthday), I get followed and harassed, and anything I look at triggers “Oh, that’s really good stuff”.
S
yeah i agree mate, im the 1st to admit i rely on supps instead of fixing my shitty diet, good post man ![]()
What concerns me is the seemly overriding desire to maintain low body fat. I am sure if I posted my diet during college I would get all sorts of comments tearing it apart and make changes. Truth is, what I ate (I calculated something like 4000-4500 cals a day) was enough for my body to grow.
Sure I had syrup on my 6 pieces of french toast with white bread each morning. And no, I did not eat enough fruit or any vegetables beyond potatoes, yes white potatoes. But the thing is, I put on nearly 50 lbs of lean muscle and no appreciable fat over two years. Point being, that most teens just need to eat more and worry far less about what they are eating. Cut out the junk, of course.
Some people should just read threads and not start them…
I can’t say much of anything new here, but I work at a gym so I have the chance to talk to a lot of the poeople, being only 20 myself I talk to a lot of the younger guys as well, usually the first thing they ask me is what I am on. Which I only say protein, but then I usually ask them the same things.
Same old same old, and I’m surprised that a few of them tell me of the steroids they are taking, some illegal stuff they need shipped over from the states. From what I know, these guys do not much else but party and drink and smoke, so I only assume there diets other then that are shit as well. Oh well, I’d simply stop asking them what they are taking but then they ask me what I think about that product.
Also, maybe it was already mentioned or commented on, but I’d say diet consists of about 80% of your gains in the gym, not 50%, that’s arguable though.
When I was in High School wrestling, me and my friend wanted to get Hyoooooj. So he had stolen his grandma’s taser…man it gets worse. We went into GNC in the middle of the day and told this dude we like just inherited some money or basically made it out like we had a shitload of dough. Told him to stock us up with everything to get JACKED, ALL OF IT. He got like testboosters, creatine, some wierd polish sounding shit, all sorts of stupid shit. The dude put it all together, he even bagged it up before we checked out. So then we go to pay, and J went like we were going for a credit card, then he just tasered this fag, and walked out with it. Mind you there is only ever one dude up at GNC, and no customers, who the fuck goes into GNC at 12 o clock on Wednesday, so we got away pretty easy.
We took this Tusslemech product called TellSeckz, and it was like a creatine with a shit load of sugar and we took it and were like. WOAH!!! Cuz all the caffeine and sugar went to our heads, we were fucking jumping over benches and shit, sprinting around the gym lol. It was retarded. He actually did get pretty big tho, when he was 17, he was putting up 310 on the bench.
