Hi, kpsnap. Thanks for the welcome. Love your avi…impressive arms! I’m also impressed with the pistol video you posted. You’re an inspiration continuing to train while recovering. Great work! I can appreciate what goes into a move like that done as nicely as you did in the vid. Not long ago, my trainer challenged me during boot camp to come up out of a “naked getup” into a pistol. I managed but I didn’t think it was good at all as far as form goes. He said at the time that it didn’t matter, that it was awesome that I had just managed to do one. So that one event got me working on pistols at home, and last weekend I managed a PR with unweighted ones: L/R: 10/10 then 10/7 ATG (I get scolded if I don’t squat that low, LOL). Meant to show Rick the next day, but we got right into training. Will have to ask him to video me so that I can see where I need to adjust. Still, I continue to work on them and will eventually add weight.
As for never having picked up a bell, yeah, I find that most people haven’t even heard of them much less trained with one. I think that was part of the draw for me in the beginning; it was something that was working for me, something fun, something I could call my own, since I didn’t know anyone outside of the class who was doing it. Folks have come and gone in those sessions, but there is a core group of people who “get it” and continue to train and improve. I’m not the type to push it in people’s faces, but if someone asks about it, I share. So, while I’ll probably share the KB workouts here, make no mistake, I’m really hoping to log my journey w/traditional lifting and how it will complement what I already know how to do. Having to be patient right now to really get rolling on that consistently due to scheduling issues, but it’s coming.

Welcome to the forum, I just replaced cable pulls with kettlebell pulls…good stuff…very hardcore :-)
Greetings and thanks for the welcome. Rock.n.roll on the KB pulls. I know there are variations on cable pulls but for KB pulls, I’m guessing that would be standing, start w/swing with the bell coming to forehead level and a slight row at the top? Just curious, because I’m trying to think…trainer never really showed us a straight KB pull; we’ve gone from swings straight to the KB snatch (so, I guess the pull is there in the motion, but we’ve never really isolated it as a separate move). Hmmm, I think you just gave me something to try out…

You got it. From between legs behind you to eye level.

Today had a session with my new trainer . . . and he’s walking in carrying kettlebells. Yep, squatting with KBs. It’s an experience.

Goblet squats or front squats( 2 kbells in rack position)

So how was class tonight?
For me it was pretty good I only got swore at 3 times! LOL
Uh…only 3 times that you know of! LOL! Did you happen to catch Howard, Jaime, and me in a huddle after the first warmup? We were lamenting the fact that you were feeling so amped up, because we know it means we will likely want to throw up or pass out at some point! Worst part in my opinion were the squat jumps with the heavy bag - but there was no way I was gonna drop it! I think I chose wisely: ropes/heavy bag BEFORE sled pushes/“box” jumps/hammer strikes was the way to go. I’m still standing… one protein shake and a hot shower later, and I feel good!

ha, no way! Due to the limited number of bells at our gym, we tend to do goblet squats so that each person can pick a weight and go (sometimes for extra “fun” it’s goblet squats & press as we stand, and we hold the bell with the handle perpendicular to your chest as opposed to holding it by the “horns”). On rare occasion, we’ve done front squats w/two bells, rack position. Either way, that’s gonna leave a mark. Two days after a heavy squat session, I’m sure my trainer’s ears burn from all the victims cussing him out as they try to walk. LOL

One KB at a time. First for goblet squats. Then hold with one hand on shoulder (technically between deltoid and bicep). Then switch to other side. Point is to help stability.
I could squat just fine but had horrible time holding it up. My upper body just lags behind. Started with 35 lb but went to 20 when that was too much.
After session, played around to see if I could learn to hold it better.

Kbell starts on the floor?
Swinging motion or a high pull/upright row
or are you describing kbell swings?
1 handed or 2 handed on bell?
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.
I built my own loadable kettlebell for these off some internet DIY videos. Works great and less awkward than cable pull throughs.
Here’s a short video from today’s kettlebell training. Rick is filming and doing the commentary. I’m sure he’ll chime in with technical info. and a little bit on how he builds the moves together for each session. I think the only move we didn’t capture were the halos (hold bell by the horns and rotate it around your head, very close to your head).
Notes:
Each move is done with one hand first - typically starting with non-dominant hand - then repeated on other side.
sotts press - Felt like I stood up a bit early on first rep. Should be: clean - squat - press in the hole - THEN stand.
swing snatch - First rep not as tight at the top as it could be. I grip tighter/punch harder with my right hand (dominant side for me)…bell is practically weightless at the top when you do it right.
split snatch - Needs more hips, but I’ll take the ones I did today!
Turkish Getup (TGU) - Feet seemed to be rolling inward today; need to stay on heels more. Still, these are easy-peasey for me, and I should go up in weight! LOL!
swing jumps - Bell was too light (used 35# here). Usually do these with 40 or 45#bell. Was landing too flat-footed instead of on toes (you shouldn’t hear me when I hit the ground).
Used 30 & 35# bells today. Tend to go lighter like this when we have newer folks join us for the session as they like to see extra reps from me for demo.
Tend to go heavier on Tuesdays when we have more veterans there.
Well, that’s odd…it isn’t playing with any sound for me, so all of Rick’s real time commentary is lost here. Not quite the same to watch the vid without it.
I’m sure he’ll comment and point out anything in particular that he feels is worth highlighting. Enjoy anyway!
