that was fucking awesome. I bet that ref could have taken both those dudes.
The very definition of “OWNED!”

For sure. I like how the ref got into a fighting stance when the guy he rag-dolled was coming out of his corner for some more. That ref would have killed that guy.

Hmmm I’ll give you one guess as to why MMA is having a hell of a hard time in the US.

By hell of a time you mean the one of the fastest growing sports?

Discuss safety in combat sports in another thread, I don’t want another redundant debate here.
Thank you.

Tito vs. Ken Shamrock I

Ken’s defense consisted of using his face to stop Tito’s offense. Ken’s corner threw in the towel but put him in amongst the elite in terms of heart.

Pedro Martinez vs. Don Zimmer

What a brawl!

Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini vs Duk Koo Kim (Spelling?)

Best fight I have ever seen. Those guys beat the hell out of each other. Unfortunately Kim died.

Surely killing a guy has to rank as #1? … was a great fight, but boom-boom was never the same after.
Doo Koo Kim died as a result of fighting too many fights close together. As I recall Boom Boom dislodged a blood clot

Holmes vs. Ali

Supposedly after the fight when Ali was lying down in the dressing room, Holmes came in to see how he was doing and Ali said something like, “I thouht you were my friend, why’d you beat me up so bad”.

I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone get thrown like that with such ease. He literally whisked him off his feet, no step in or anything. THAT is what I call “functional” strength.

1919, Jack Dempsey vs. Jess Willard.

Dempsey knocked Willard down 7 times in the first round. Willard didn’t answer the bell for the 4th round, because he had several missing teeth, cracked ribs, a broken nose and jaw, and his eyes were swollen shut.

Good one! Forgot all about that. Does film exist? From what I’ve read it was absolutely horrific.
I didn’t even think there would be, but…YouTube to the rescue:

Wild stuff. Not having the neutral corner rule really does make a huge difference.

arturo gatti vs mickey ward 1,2, and 3

How many OZs were their gloves back then?

After much thought I’d like to nominate Mankind vs Undertaker, Hell in a Cell.

Or maybe Hogan vs Andre the Giant.

Don Frye vs. Kenta Takayama in Pride. Awesome toe-to-toe. Not much skill, just pure brutality.

On a similar note, Ray Sefo and Mark Hunt’s fight in K-1

Don’t think there’s many that can take more punishment than Takayama. There’s a few Japanese fighters that don’t have great skills but man can they take a hit and keep on fighting.

All of Dempsey’s championship fights are on video. The Willard fight was pretty brutal if all of the injuries he suffered are legit. Dempsey was accused years later of using plaster of paris on his wraps, which is BS.

Tons of brutal fights in the 1910s and 1920’s with Harry Greb, Mickey Walker, Stanley Ketchell, Sam McVey (the Mike Tyson of that era).

Anyone remember the Arturo Gatti - Joey Gamache fight? That was hard to watch. Joey Gamache is having problems to this day because of that fight. Also, the George Jones-Beethavean Scottland fight four or five years back that took Scottland’s life.

I nominate Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura. This fight brings new meaning to the phrase “Don’t Mess With Texas”.

Butterbean Vs. Bart Gunn of WWF, that second knock down…good god.

Jesus H. Christ. That was fucking horrific. He almost blasted him through the ropes everytime he barely stood up. Those guys were hard core.

Jerome Le Banner vs Don Frye

It was a K-1 vs Pride fight, and Don kind of took one for the team. Hilarious commentary:

Bas Rutten: What the hell is going on here?
Stephen Quadros: He’s getting a standing 8 count.
Bas: What…why?
Quadros: Well, he’s getting his ass kicked.

EDIT: Add Kharitonov vs Overeem. Poor Kharitonov breaks his shoulder in that first knee after the takedown, and grows more balls than brains and doesn’t tap out. Instead, he eats about 50 knees to his face.

Don looks like Tom Selleck on steroids.

Does Don Frye epitomize an American fighter or what? Big bushy mustache and red, white, and blue shorts.
