Biggest Beatdowns of All-Time

I was at the Pernell Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez fight in San Antonio in the early 90’s. Whitaker beat Chavez’ ass all over the ring, but it was called a draw so as not to start a riot in a 95% Mexican crowd. That was really gay. That same night, “Terrible” Terry Norris knocked some dude clean through the ropes, which is one of the coolest things a 10 yr old me had ever seen.

And to the guy who said Foreman is the scariest heavyweight ever, two words : Mike Tyson. For the first 5 or so years of his career, nobody since the turn of the century brought that kind of aura in the ring. The second you heard the metal clanging in the background, everyone in the building {including who ever he was fighting} hair stood up on the back of their necks.

-Fedor Emelianenko vs Gary Goodridge

Gary was a pretty decent fighter, which made the mauling he received over the next two minutes somewhat shocking. Fedor broke his hand from hitting Gary so much and so hard in the flurry he unleashed.

-Fedor Emelianenko vs Zuluzinho

Zulu was undefeated in some shit Brazilian boxing league. He said he could knock out Fedor. He was wrong.

We just talked about this on another thread. But, I think the first Ortiz/Shamrock fight was a pretty good beat down.

I agree.

I think the expression on Bob Sapp’s face after CroCop dropped him was a sign of a good beat-down.

That punch doesn’t look hard until you see it in slow motion. It shattered Bob Sapp’s orbital socket. I think I would lay on the ground and cry too.

What a great round! Thanks for the link.

Heavyweight boxing in the 70s kicked ass.

Too many to name – if you’re talking about brutal beatdowns (and not just beatdowns), in mixed martial arts one that immediately pops into my mind is Mark Kerr’s debut in one of the WVC’s tournaments in Brazil. He beat “The Polar Bear” Paul Varelans to a pulp and then pounded on Fabio Gurgel in the final for 30 minutes until Gurgel’s face was a mess. This was the tournament that earned Kerr the nickname “The Smashing Machine”. He also fought Mastre Hulke in the tournament, but the fight is non-eventful compared to the other two. That’s the only video clip I found.

Also, in Vale Tudo Japan, Gerard Gordeau illegally eye-gouging Yuki Nakai, which caused Yuki to go blind in his right eye. Nevertheless, Yuki eventually caught Gordeau in a heel hook in the fourth round after withstanding an awful lot of punishment.

In boxing, most of the ones that pop into my mind are from fights pre-1960.

Not quite on the level of beatdowns that have been posted but damn, it cracks me up.

best clip ever.

I would say my momma whooping me when I came home drunk, with a hicky on my neck when I was about 12 yo but other than that:

Bobby Chacon vs Azuma Nelson

Hagler vs Hearns

Hagler vs Mugabi

For brutal wars there is the Ward Gatti trilogy.

Holyfield vs Bowe. I think it was round 9 of fight 1 when Bowe had Holyfield seemingly dead on his feet then from somehwere deep down inside, Holyfield rallied to nearly put away Bowe. Gives me chills just thinking about it.

The most recent beatdown in boxing is Floyd vs Gatti.

UFC, Leban getting his ass handed to him by Sylva. This will keep me smiling for a long time.

That was a double beatdown and then some!

Don Frye vs. Kenta Takayama in Pride. Awesome toe-to-toe. Not much skill, just pure brutality.

On a similar note, Ray Sefo and Mark Hunt’s fight in K-1

Not a beatdown… but any of the Gatti Vs Ward were brillant viewing. Those two had so much heart

Sakuraba vs. Ricardo Arona

I sure hope that Sapp didn’t learn his boxing skills from a boxing coach. I’m not sure why Sapp thought it was a good idea to hold his hands at navel level.

Brutal punches can be deceiving on TV. Take Foreman vs. Moorer. When you watch the tape, it doesn’t look like Foreman’s KO punch to Moorer was very hard. In reality, Forearm’s shot was so powerful and direct that it split Moorer’s mouthpiece right down the middle.

I was going to mention Gatti. He’s been in some brutal fights. Gatti had the best chin in the business.

germany vs poland.

sorry, couldn’t resist.
Curse you! I wanted to be the first to say that. But don’t forget Germany vs. France. Twice.

On the subject, Foreman/Frazier, is one of my favs. I haven’t seen many MMA matches though (no cable).

And one of my favorite fights, though not a beatdown, Sugar vs. Hagler. Constant combos from Sugar that looked like they were lightning strikes. Even in the very last rounds.

Anyone Amaury Bitteti and Don Frye.

The knees Don was throwing from the sprawl sounded like cannon blasts.

The Michael Spinks - Mike Tyson Fight back in 1987 - 1988. My friends and I paid the ungodly sum of 45 bucks to watch that fight on PPV - back when fights cost like 20 bucks.

I had to take a piss - and missed the entire fight. It wasn’t a marathon beat down - but Tyson knocked the want-to right out of Spinks in less than a minute.

Or - in less time than it takes a half drunk college kid to take a whizz.

How do you say it? Tyson knocked Spinks the fuck out? Something like that.
knocked him down twice in like a minute twenty. awesome!!
