I just started doing Big Boy Basics, using the exact routine at the end of the article. (http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=459533)

Switching to all 3x8 would defeat the purpose of the program. Switching up the set/rep parameters allows you to train different strength qualities and maintain higher training frequency.
If gaining mass is your primary objective, 8x3 is a great system. It allows you to train with high intensity while maintaining a high volume. In fact, 'round these parts, this type of training is highly regarded for its hypertrophy effect.
Here’s a article by CW that may help you understand why the 8x3 is essential:

The fact that you don’t like the 8x3 is even more reason to do it. Remember, if you want to gain, you must train your weaknesses. You probably enjoy 3x8 because you’re very efficient at it. The BBB program should not be altered - trust me.
