you bet there are “recreational lifters out there that have better lifts than world record holders”???
You cant be serious with this.
I bet there are recreational runners out there who would win the Boston Marathon… but they just love the joy of doing it alone.
I bet there are recreational swimmers out there who would out swim Michael Phelps… But they just love the joy of doing it alone.
I bet there are recreational sprinters out there who would beat Usain Bolt in the 100m… but they just love the joy of doing it alone.
do you see how absolutely dumb that is?
Records are made to be broken and, theoretically, they all will be broken in time… but saying that a “recreational” anything would beat the greatest person at that sport is absolutely ridiculous.
I see how absolutely dumb it is on both sides.
You act like people of this caliber would not be noticed by others, are they hermits living completely apart from society?
This is a possibility. I’m pretty much a hermit and distance myself from society. Although, no superpowers how would anyone know?
You act like everybody that is great at something wants to showcase it.
Being great at something means you have to practice something. Someone can practice their amazing ability in complete solitude their entire life without being noticed for it? Right.
Once again, strongholds post ends this stupid debate.
I agree this is a stupid debate. And, yes I do believe it’s possible for someone to become great at something without being noticed.
If I may use myself as an example. I kicked some crazy as at trivial pursuit. Against a guy that I’ve known for years. You know what he said at the end of the game? ‘I didn’t realize you were that smart’ (read: knew so much useless shit). Why? Because of my level of introversion I don’t go around displaying my abilities errr whatever, fuck.
This may be a reason why all you crazy extroverts have a tough time realizing there are people out there that do things solely for themselves.
You really just compared you winning at a random game of trivial pursuit against a friend to being the best in the entire world at it?
Ok, now go play against the world record holder, if there is one for trivia, and let me know how that goes for you.
You’re gonna need a better example than that, come on…
Obviously it was a ridiculous examples. I was just trying to highlight that not everyone wants to showcase what they are capable of. I think this must be understood.

Until there is some evidence of some random dude being better than MJ or some other stud anyone opposing the majority view point is arguing in hypothetical situations, when we are arguing with facts.

Youtube wasn’t always around. Considering some of you take the word of pro athletes who commented about another player to be false, no one could ever provide proof. Like someone wrote about the Negro League, there is no way in hell we even know about all of the truly best at all sport endeavors throughout even the last 100 years.
Miyamoto Musashi trained in complete solitude for years until he perfected his sword fighting technique. He eventually revealed his skills, killed some folks, and is considered one of the greatest if not the greatest sword wielder of all time.
The thing is was he the best in the world upon completion of his training or was he the best once he proved his worth against the other greats.
Personally I think you have to beat the best to be the best. This goes for street fighters vs. MMA guys, and1 guys vs. NBA, or anything else for that matter.

not one single person in here has argued against this… what has been said, over and over, is that a random person right now ISNT doing it. Will it happen some day? Probably… is it happening right now by some streetballer in harlem? hell no

What? No one is arguing that AT ALL. You’re the guy who said some random in Harlem is better than Micheal Fucking Jordan, he just didn’t get noticed. What I’m [and most of the othersare] arguing is that if someone were to possess world class ability they WOULD GET NOTICED, no matte how hard they tried not to. Your boy didn’t incline 5-hundo for reps, there isn’t some random in the hood with more talent than MJ and the tooth fairy will not steal your business. End of discussion.

This isn’t something that can be argued with facts. On either side. Yeah, one side has facts in the from of world records, etc. But, those only say what someone did in a competition. Don’t many competitors beat these recorded records, but can not be used because there wasn’t whatever parameters in place to record it “officially”? But, we believe these people because they have recorded world records before.
So, why is it so hard for some to believe that there are people out there that have never been recorded in an “official” way that can accomplish world record breaking feats?
What’s so hard to believe? I squatted 905lbs 6 times last night. Prove me wrong.

Perhaps not in Harlem, but what about somewhere else. You can not say with 100% certainty this is the case.

As far as the subject is concerned I believe the difference between MJ and the around the hood guy who COULD be MJ is opportunity. Some of these guys go to shitty schools that get no attention from scouts. Some of them aren’t really into the strict regimen of organized sports and would rather play recreational. Others have attitude problems.
Just because your talented it doesn’t mean that you AUTOMATICALLY will be brought into the profession. A lot of the kids who play in the And 1 league don’t play defense and can’t shoot a jumper for shit. But you know what, there are plenty of dudes in the NBA who can’t do that, shit Shawn Bradley made a career out of being a tall dufus.
He couldn’t do shit other than stand in the paint and get dunked on. He went through the proper channels and got into the NBA.
that’s what separates some talented people from the others.
Shawn Bradley wasn’t just a tall dufus. The guy was 7’6"! He got into the NBA because of his freakish height and he knew how to play the game. The NBA didn’t have much experience with guys that tall and they took a risk with him. The guy was 2nd pick overall. Yeah he didn’t have a great career, but still his height got him into the NBA more than any of his connections.
An unbelievable event is nothing like a repeatable, observable skill. If someone makes a claim of a lift that is higher than any proven lift in the history of weightlifting, I’m not going to believe it. I’m still waiting for Max Charles to bust out some 315lb preachers.

Superman just flew by my house to say that I was wrong. He’s going to have a drink at the beach with Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy (not the dwayne johnson version)

Yes, I can. Basketball [or any sport for that matter] is ultimately about winning. If someone were to possess that kind of talent they would be seen and given an oppertunity on the spot. I dropped out of high school at 15, and from playing in various leagues and open gyms I was seen and given several JUCO and small school oppertunities, and I was no Jordan.
Anyone that truely believes that there is somerandom out there right now who isbetter than the greatest basketball player of all times is either incredibly naive or a fucking idiot.

Quite ambiguous I know. When I reread I knew it would be brought up. My apologies for my horrible inarticulateness.
World record facts are in the form of observable feats confined to certain parameters. Not everyone is achieving whatever it is within these confines. World records, “facts”, in this regard are a moot point.

Without being in the same place at the same time observing the exact same thing as you, you’re right I can not be 100% certain. But, I can be 99.9999% certain.

LWH - sorry for moving away from your thread but some of this stuff is just BS.
2 points and I’m out.
Most of you are fairly young and live in an age where you think everything is Youtube and media ready and so you use that as a point of reference for reality. Not everyone that is big and strong has a desire to lift competitively. Some people actually just like to lift and its recreational.
That said, just because someone in a competitition is listed as the best doesn’t mean there isn’t someone out there better. I incline 315 8-12 reps and honestly- it doesnt hit my pecs because I’m shoulder dominant in all my pressing excercises. Its not difficult for me to believe that a man bigger than me can move a couple more hundy.
As for the PRO sports references - most of those comments are just crazy. I grew up in Chicago and watched MJ play every chance I got. He’s not doing anything more phenominal than any other NBA player today. He was just ahead of his time. Have any of you seen the AND 1 mixtapes - those dudes are sick - and there are sicker ones in the street.
Talent alone doesn’t get you to the pro level. Pro players develop under skilled systems and coaches. Flaws are worked out. They understand playbooks and team concepts. They get vouched for. - Truely, is this any different than a corporate job? I know we all want to believe that if we work hard and are the brightest than you will get rewarded but who you know plays a very imporatant part.
This is easily one of the dumbest things ever written.
Hey! You are just ASSUMING this is one of the dumbest things ever written. Before the Internet people wrote things down on paper. It’s possible there could be people out there who wrote shit loads of dumber stuff than this but never had it published.
In all seriousness, his analysis of Jordan and people who play streeball is ridiculous.
