Benching Without Spotters.

Alright so i’m wondering if anyone has this problem… whenever I bench if i don’t have a spotter I just suck, I really can’t bench that well, when I have a spotter everything goes amazing. I realize its a mind over matter thing, but I was wondering if anyone had a good technique for getting over this because it is really annoying.

DBs

There’s nothing that will just up and fix this. Its about you gaining the confidence needed.

Do bench press from the pins. If you fail, you’re still safe because the pins will protect you from the weight crashing down on you.

do you lift by yourself? If not, how hard is it to get a spot in your gym?

I personally can’t bench for shit without a hand off because of my long ass arms…makes me lose all my tightness if trying to unrack on my own…

its not hard to get a spot its just annoying that i try to go like 230 which shouldnt be that hard ( just finally hit 315 recently) and cant bang out as many reps alone as with someone just standing there.

i prefer to bench without a spotter, i don’t like when they place their hands on the bar or something, i really lose my focus when benching with a spotter, i suggest you bench inside a power rack so you can feel more confident.

I highly recommend getting somebody from the gym to spot you. I have a hard time keeping tightness in my back if I have to unrack the weight myself.

Just explain to any new spotter how you prefer they assist you, if they suck ask someone else next time. Repeat until you have a few gym regulars who are able to spot you.

I bench alone at home in a cage. Set the safety stops to where it touches your chest when arched and rests on the rack when flat. Problem solved.

Echoed for truth.

Visual example if anyone needs one

goddamn I wish I had his bench ROM

You probably wouldn’t mind having his deadlift or squat either, haha. Mike T’s a strong mofo for sure.

The only way I’d barbell bench without a spot is in a rack shown in the video above, just deflate your chest so the bar hits the pins, and slide out if you get stuck.

Or, if I was doing something like I,BB where you handle ‘easier’ weights (80%ish) and leave a few reps in the tank.

Bench press alone at home what if you failed 120kg(264lb) - YouTube thats one way to do it

thats not very easy to do with 300-400lb

Point taken!

I think dumbbells are the best bet if you dont have access to a power rack.
