Benching 505 @ 238lbs

ROFLMAO!!! Yes…it does seem a bit hypocritical doesnt it? I was talking specifically about the legs up bench. I wasn’t wearing my Titan in that one, as evidenced by how slow it creeped off my chest. Good bench BTW. I’ve never tried the elbow sleeves. Do they make much of a difference?

And I plan on being in Ohio for just a few days in December, gonna try and bench with Mike Wolfe and his crew in Celina while I’m there. I’ll try and squeeze into some kind of double-ply, or maybe some super shirt and see if I can give 600 a try. I’ll post it in the records thread, as long as it doesn’t look like total shit!! LOL!! Keep up the good work!

Nice Press!!! I train with Mike on Sundays, so maybe see ya there. We have his charity meet on Dec 3rd in Celina.

Hey ff you probably will see me there! Randy is my younger brother’s father-in-law, and he was just asking when I was going to be in Ohio so I could come bench with you guys!! I’m really looking forward to it.

And Meat, that was in my Titan fury. The most I’ve ever done in a raw competition is 460, which was actually a few years ago. I usually always wear a shirt over my bench shirt cause I don’t like standing out like a sore thumb…if that makes sense. Pretty much no one else at the gym I workout at, at the time I workout there, wears a shirt. So to avoid 50 million questions from the general “stay in shape” crowd, I just throw a shirt on over it. And I put mine on only every once in awhile. I put it on a few days ago for the first time in probably a month, and rammed up 455 with little effort. My long term goal was always 600! I’ve missed it 3 or 4 times, then my shoulders and my lower back started telling me I REALLY needed to back off, so I gave that up for awhile. So yea…competition 500 shirted, 550 in the gym, best competition raw bench 460.

This thread may be the most amazing thing I have ever seen on this forum.

And Nik and Gorangers,

Something else I forgot to add on the deadlift and squat answer. A few years ago my left foot got completely folded in half in a freak wrestling accident with my nephew when I was barefoot. I ended up with what’s called a Lis Franc injury. It SUCKS let me tell you. Google it if you’re curious! ANYWAY, I had surgery in an attempt to fix it. They ended up scraping the cartlidge out from between 3 of my metatarsals where it attaches to the main part of my foot, then using bone cement to fuse the bones together. THEN, they put 3 titanium screws in from the side to hold it all together. If you think that sounds shitty, you’re RIGHT!! lol!! ANYWAY, my foot never really recovered, which actually drove me to retire from the Marine Corps. The main problem I have now is that I can’t really place all my weight on the ball of my left foot without hating life. You can see how that would affect my deadlift and squat endeavors as well. Just FYI!!

Dave

Hey Liquid,

How much do you think a slingshot helps? I saw them selling them at the Arnold last year and thought about buying one. It’s an interesting concept, but I tried on a few and couldn’t find any that felt tight enough to really make a difference. My younger brother was just telling me Mike Wolfe put one on at the END of his workout the other day and did 405 for like 20 or 25 and 315 for like 40 reps before he got bored and stopped benching. Ha!

FF…any word on that??

Dave

Very true. That really sucks, I’d hate to not be able to squat/deadlift at my full potential =/. I just thought it was weird that you haven’t really mentioned anything about them, but now I understand. Care to explain the freak accident? haha Seems like some story.

Yea…we were in my living room and me and my nephew started messing around pushing each other back and forth. He was like 15 or 16 at the time and fricken weighed like 250 or so. Big damn corn fed type! lol! So we kinda got locked in pushing each other back and forth, and I let him start pushing me backward a little. Well my plan was to spin quickly, and as he came into me, use his momentum to hip toss him over onto his back. Well, I spun to the side, he came into my hip, but when I went to throw him, instead of going over my hip, he dropped all his weight straight down, kind of like a wrestling move. When he did that, I was still pivoted on my left foot, so it was vertical. When he dropped his weight…BAM…right on top of my vertical left foot. I heard a really loud SNAP, then after I got him and my other nephew off of me (they both jumped me cause I was down), I quickly walked back to my bedroom and laid on my bed, in MAJOR pain. Within a few minutes, when I went to stand back up , I couldn’t walk on it AT ALL!!

I actually gave it like 6 months to start healing, but it only got worse. Since I had torn all the ligaments and “sheathing” across the top of my foot, there was nothing to keep it tight. So if you can picture this, my left foot just kept getting wider and wider and wider. I pretty much had to have surgery to try and fix it.

It does suck because now I don’t run…AT ALL!! I think the farthest I’ve ran since surgery is 1/4 mile, and my foot killed me for like 2 weeks after the fact. I manage to stay in shape thru a decent diet and a lot of Metabolic Resistance Training…on top of the lifting.

awesome man i hope to be able to do that one year

I missed my freshmen year of football in college because of a Lis Franc injury. That shit fucking sucks. I could walk fine after a couple weeks, but if I tried to put any decent amount of force on the ball of my foot I just collapsed in pain.

I still have a dislocated metatarsal in my left foot from it, and it used to get crazy sore if I was on my feet for a long time. It’s mostly fine now though, 11 years later.

Steel…nice to actually meet someone who knows exactly what I went thru/am going thru. January will be 4 years since the surgery, and I’m still like that, with the putting any decent amount of force on the ball of my foot. It most definitely SUCKS!! So hopefully in another 7 years mine will be back to normal! lol!! Probably not though. So did you actually have surgery on it too, or just let it try and heal on it’s own?

And I saw your deadlift in the PRs thread. IMPRESSIVE!! You made it look pretty damn easy. Looked like you had another 30-40lbs in you for sure!

Just stick with it man and you will get there. I think most, if not all, of the really strong guys in this forum have been lifting for a long, long time! Just be consistent, add weight to the bar when you can, take in enough calories, and, if you wanna be strong, use a program that is geared more for strength instead of bodybuilding. The two are definitely not the same!
