Old timer here, but a little story about 315. I remember when I first did it like it was yesterday. It was in Tully gym at FSU, a hole in the ground stinky weightroom under the basketball gym. I had just turned 19. It was a max effort, barely making it, but it was a big thrill.
However, I learned the importance of the mind in bodybuilding one month later. I had kind of stalled at three plates, and one day I walked into Tully draggin my ass wondering when I was going to get my second rep at 315. As I sat down to bench, this blond-headed dude with an incredible physique asked me…“Mind if I join you?” As I looked up, I was shocked to see it was Dave Draper, the legend. I choked out a “yes, sir” and we started our sets.
Four sets later, I did 5 reps with 315, with Draper's hand an inch under the bar for every rep. I was not about to let "The Blond Bomber" throw out his back helping a novice lifter.
I never saw him again, but I always remember that story when I think I am "stuck" at a plateau. [/quote]
That’s awesome. I always have the best workouts when lifting with someone way stronger than me.
Good work to the OP, I’ve been in a lot of gyms over the past few years and can probably count the number of people I’ve witnessed pressing 3 plates on one hand, so you’re in solid company. Of course, if you read lifting forums everyone on the fucking planet bench presses 315. Funny I never meet them.
Congrats to you sir. I’m almost to my goal of 315 for 5 reps but havn’t hit yet. So far I’ve only been able to put it up 3 times entirly by myself. I’m 18 and would love to join you guys in the race to the 405. I’d definitly be willing to bet a tub of surge on it. My ultimate goal is to 315 for about 10+ reps but that comes with getting stronger anyways…
god damn, there are some strong young bucks on here
great lift man, i just started squating that much and im 21
keep up the good work, and be focused on your goals, even if loosing weight is going to be harder, with some conviction you’ll get it… just look at your bench
I am definitely no expert, so take what I say with a mountain of salt, but I wanted to write down a few things that helped me keep my bench moving up when I was stuck for a bit. Maybe it will help those people who posted that they are close.
When I was stuck at 275 1rm for a while, I came into the gym and decided that I would bench 225 for 100 reps, and that would be my entire workout. I started with sets of 4 and ended up with sets of 1, to get to 100 reps it took me about 95 minutes, but the next week I came in and threw up 285 at a decent speed, did the exact same thing maybe 2 months later when I was stuck at 300, but doing 245 for 100 reps and that got me up to 305.
Another thing that I think helped me was doing some dynamic bench at the beginning of my shoulder day (I use a body part split) I would do 9x3 with 60% 1rm and switching up my grip every 3 sets.
I know this sounds crazy but I tested my 1rm bench almost every monday for the past 5-6 months, maybe I have good joints, because from what I have read that should really mess you up.
I can’t wait to work my way up to 405, but hopefully I can hit 405 weighing 220-230 and not 275.
Thanks, for all the congratulating, I’ll do my best to stick with lifting… maybe I’ll hit 405 before 20
Everyone has different style of training their isn’t really one right way to do it, w/e you have been doing has worked so congratz. I’m currently moving away from my pl hit 300+ bench 400+ squat and dl and I’m now working on speed and Olympic lifting which is a totally different style of training. The one thing about doing high reps-100- is it can be hard on the joints just be careful and avoid injuries.-push yourself but not to the point where you might injure yourself-

Maybe we should start a 315 to 405 training thread? If nothing else it would be interesting to see how three people approach it and what works for them.

Yea I actually had one of the strongest guys in the gym spotting me when I hit it, he had a minor shoulder injury so he only works around 2 plates now, but I have seen him bench 315 for 8 reps before at a BW of 185.
I told him I was only going to do 1 rep, and not to touch it, but once I hit it he made me turn it into a double… a very assisted double… that bastard, my eyes almost popped out of my head.
