So if you play/watch poker at all you may have seen the some of the recent ESPN coverage. A few episodes ago Ted Forrest was talking about some wagers that he has made and said that someone bet him 30 grand that he couldn’t bench press 225 pounds fifty times in one day. I was watching this recently with some friends and I threw out there that I bet I could accomplish this feat in ten minutes. They agreed I could not and each bet me $100 I couldn’t do it. I will attempt to do it for the cash next weekend. Yesterday at the gym I tried a practice run to see if I was even in the proximity of doing this. I am 22 years old, 6’1", 215 pounds and about 9% bf. I can max about 325 and can rep 225 12ish times.
My plan was to try doing seven sets of 7 with a minute or so in between. I won’t go in to specific specifics but I had a counter and a timer with me, got the first four sets done and then really started to feel it. The fifth set I only got six reps. Then five, and ultimately crossed the ten minute mark with 48 unassisted reps. I will have to be able to get all fifty done next Sunday (five days from now). Any advice? Should I change the rep schedule? More reps early when I have more energy or more sets of less reps? Any pre-contest nutritional advice? I NEVER have caffine and never really have sugar so I suppose I could suck down a coke or two beforehand. Any input would be great. Thanks.
I don’t know about sugar, but the caffene will definitely help. Also, if you do not use caffene, I imagine you do not use ephedrine either. Ephedrine should easily be able to make up the last two reps over the course of ten minutes, for a first time user. Finally, just work on your arch, and find out if your friends will let you lift your butt off the bench.
I would try maybe 10 sets of 5 or 8 sets of 6, then crank out the extra two at the end. You might get the nervous system effect similar to GVT where you struggle a few sets in, then almost get a second wind effect.
I’d say practice the lift every other day til about tuesday or wednesday and then shut it down…ladders will probably work best to get your total up, doing one rep, resting a few seconds, then doing two, resting, then three, etc…til you get near failure, then starting again at one. If you just made 48, you should have no problem adding 2 to your total…just make sure you’re fresh
Coke will just make you bloated. If you want caffine try caffine pills. Although I think you probably won’t need either. If you got 48, buck up and get the last 2. You can do it.
As for reps, you might want to start out with sets of 8, then drop from there. That will keep you a few reps ahead of the clock.
use as much momentum as you can while you’re lifting. don’t worry about doing 301 or 402, do a 101 so you save your energy for those later ones. this is about winning money, not making gains on your bench
yeah dont do the Coke. the carbonation will just slow you down.
but caffein is supposed to increase your pain threshold and increase endurance. and definately load up on carbs a couple days in advance.
If you are not already using creatine, then loading creatine 20 grams/day for 5 days should help.
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)loading 300 mg/kg body weight appx 1-2 hours prior to the event would also help. Be sure to test this earlier in the week because it could cause GI problems if you are sensitive.
im no expert but i think this could make the 50 reps in 10 min rather easy
do one rep every ten sec
the reason for this is to decrease fatigue. because you will be going no where near failure, fatigue will come slower and you should be able to pump out a bit more than 50.
ask any of the trainers affiliated with this site and im sure they’ll tell you that 50sets/1rep is a lot easier than 7/7 or 10/5 with the same weight in the same time period.
if you can do this, the 50/1 leaves time left for mistakes and even doing more reps.
test this out with squats or something, cuz i haven’t personal experience with it so i could be wrong (even though i think im right).
if you try this i wanna know how easy it was so be sure to post.
