Bashing of Bodybuilders: Why?

That’s what I’m talking about! As I ask previously on this board …

“when the fuck did everyone all of the sudden become a fighter?!”[/quote]

Ummm, around 2006 I guess. You obviously didn’t get the memo.

It coincided with everyone becoming pro-level Texas Hold’em players and enjoying Gray Goose bottle-keep service at the nightclubs.

Now, in 2008, every male between the ages of 18 and 35 is a Card-dealin’, arm-barrin’, vodka-swiggin’ sumbitch.

See…just like this guy right here…

Guarantee you that he’s thinking about Texas Hold’em wagers, and the most imposing looking Affliction shirt he can afford for his 60 bucks.

Both are impressive displays of strength. Who the hell is Branch Warren though?
Branch versus Kimbo? How’d that turn out?

Are you being serious with who is Branch Warren or no?

Branch scares little children when he strides by…Rumor is that he even scared Chuck Norris once…/:wink:

People tend to fear what they don’t understand. They see a big guy 250+ and think “oh he’s a meathead” or other stereotypes.

I found a post by IFBB pro Evan Centopani on another forum that i thought fits well here

Evan:
I think that how people perceive you has everything to do with how you carry yourself. Some would say that being bigger than normal or more muscular than average would make most people assume you’re a dickhead. But I don’t think that’s true. I think if you carry yourself with an arrogant air about you or you act cocky then yeah, people are gonna think that. Bu that goes for pretty much anyone.

I will agree that if you’re out at a bar or club (places I don’t go anymore ) people who are drunk and have their beer balls are more likely to try and test you. And I have gotten into fights with people before because I had no patience for their shit but I’ve learned a couple things. For the most part, if I go out somewhere I keep my eyes to myself and if I make eye contact with people I may smile slightly (I just try not to look so serious because people often mistake that as you trying to be tough or intimidating).

In short, I mind my own business and try to be as curteous as possible. And I don’t go out in tight shirts or shirts with the sleeves chopped off or anything like that! If you look like a meathead then people will perceive you that way. I think that if you keep to yourself and are polite and friendly if approached, people respect you regardless of your build.

Ok just so we are getting both sides of the coin here seen as this thread is spose to be about why we think people hate on bodybuilders.
A pro bodybuilder’s physique resembles the trolls from The Lord of the Rings more than they resemble wat the average person would call an atractive body.
Having such massive thighs and body in general does make your junk look kind of puny in posing trunks.

Most people dont get that looking at your body in the mirror is a way of measuring your progress and think you just love your own reflection (and hence BBs must think they are better than everybody else).

TC wrote an article dealing with stuff like this. To me its all ego man. Bicep warriors who weigh 150lbs at 6 foot go in there supersetting there dumbell cheat curls with tricep push downs for that nasty burn to get hyyooggee. During their intense workout they see a guy like my genetic freak friend who weighs 180 @ 5’7 and reps a 300 bench. This kid is a fucking retard with no money and refuses to take protein but those bicep badasses still talk shit cause he inadvertantly busts their ego. It used to happen to me all the time when i first started lifting, now i respect the game and all those “meatheads” i disregarded are now my most valuable gym asset

On the side of the bodybuilder
People hate arrogance and assume that because your well built that you must hink your better than everyone else, that is just they’re insecurity mostly. the biggest guys in our gym are very down to earth and encouraging,if people take the time to get to know them they realise that they are just normal guys who like to lift and be big.

People somehow think that you must be up yourself if you flex in the mirror to see how your biceps are doing, but those same people are jumping on the scales and checking there tummy in the mirror. They’re all methods of mesuring progress, just different goals.
When people actually understand why bodybuilders do wat they do (eat, train etc) they generally don’t make those stupid comments. People will always bash wat they dont understand

yesterday i go up to the front desk to buy a Met-RX Colossal…its a canned protein and this douche who works there is like, do you know what your body fat percentage is? im like, i couldnt care less. hes like, oh so youre just bulking up?

im like yea, probaly for another year…honestly abs are overrated, thats what i think. then i left. it was one of those “you had to be there” things.

I agree that some of the biggest guys at my gym are also some of the nicest and most down to earth. It’s the guys who aren’t that big or strong and have imaginary lat syndrome that give BBers a bad rap. The douche that is always screaming and dropping weights that are ordinary for many average lifters.

I think it is just the human tendency to bash ppl who are different from the norm.

We like to find flaws in everything to perhaps make ourselves feel better?

I don’t know.

I think BB’s have their place in society and I admire the work and dedication they put into their training regardless of reasons why. THey got to where they are at because of hard work and dedication. It is hard to bash that. At least for me.

Do I want to be like that? No. But I do admire those people who do and are like that.

It’s all good.

honestly, yes. Never heard of him. Very impressive, but still. I don’t read any bodybuilding press, I don’t search you tube for training videos, etc. Couldn’t name one competing (currently) BB’ers.

I graduated high school nearly 25 years ago and I think I bought a muscle mag in my junior year…maybe senior year.

I see everyone’s point here. But I do not think its a matter of bashing something because you can’t understand it or don’t know about.

I’ve bashed things that I KNOW ABOUT. I’ve bashed neighborhoods, people, ideologies, bookes, movies, and so on because I DID know about them and after learning what they were about, didn’t like 'em!

this is true i know alot of big guys some pros who are very nice guys and there fun to talk to but its possible that if a big guy is an asshole he might just be an asshole regardless of muscle

It’s not pleasing to the eye for a good many people. I’m talking about physiques closer to Pro-bodybuilders, and not what your typical non-juicing (but dedicated lifter) is going to achieve. For alot of people there’s a point were that “strong, muscular” physique moves into freakish side-show territory.

Like something they’d expect to see standing alongside the bearded lady, or the world’s smallest man. You’re as likely to change how they feel, as to convince this site to put up images of obese chicks in skimpy outfits. Some things just aren’t going to be pleasing to everyone’s eye, and might even be considered “freakish” looking.

I could understand saying something like that if this were Men’s Health.com, or AverageJoe.com and not a site which promotes itself as a BB’ing site. On a BB’ing site you’d think, obviously erroneously, that the people coming to that site might, just might be into BB’ing and might have different ideas of what the term “freakish” means.

Heck, I’d love to be “freakish” and I think that most other serious guys on here would probably feel the same way.

As far as the fat chicks in skimpy outfits, this isn’t heffer-nation.com “the worlds largest chucky chaser website”, so again that example doesn’t really hold much water in this context.

The point was about changing minds on what is attractive.

Were we talking about trying to change people’s minds about what is attractive? Maybe we were and my reading comprehension just sucks. But I was under the impression that the thread was about why PT’s feel the need to rip on BB’ers. Especially those who write for a BB’ing website.
