Back Injury/Hamstrings?

About 10 days ago I herniated a disk doing a clean and press. I have become even more serious about rehab now and want to know if anyone else with lower back problems has noticed a relationship between lower back injuries and tight hamstrings. My theory is that years of leg workouts centered on quads with 3-5 sets of hams at the end have left me out of balance. Now, my hams are always tight and that is throwing my lower back off as my body tries to compensate. Does anyone else think there is a relationship between tight hamstrings and lower back injuries?

Of course there is. This is something you definately need to discuss with your rehab therapist.

Absolutely, I tore both hamstrings running track throughout high school. They were always tight and I had to spend ample time stretching to get them to loosen up. I was training heavy in clean/jerk for college when I ruptured two discs in my back. One of the first questions out of my doctors mouth was, “Have you ever had problems with your hamstrings?”. I’ve used flex bands to stretch ever since and have been relatively injury free.

Thanks for the insight. I love the continual quest of learning about our bodies.

For sure there is a relationship.
I hurt my back, and the physiotherapist noticed my hamstrings were tight. There was the answer. Tight hamstrings will case back problems, and knee problems. The hamstrings pull on alot of differnt muscles and whatnot in the body. I used to get sore knee’s sometimes to. Started stretching, and no more knee problems.
