Lee haney did them this way and he would use quite a bit of elbow flexion in efforts to maximize the movement given his enormous ass mass. This was done only after maximal scapular elevation/retraction.

I feel you man, I’ve actually never done them because the one time I tried, my ass got in the way.
On an unrelated note, I noticed the other day at a party that I have a bigger ass than most of the girls I know…how sad is that?

Fear not good people, Nate Green is soon to release a ground breaking article about the advantages of behind the back against the ass statics. Ass-holds for short. It will lift and separate the glutes, as well as grow huge traps, a sure hit with the ladies.
Is Nate Green now the target of the bodybuilding forum’s hate? Cause I didn’t get the memo.
lipo
i tend to keep my elbows back and almost move my shoulders diagonally from a forward-down position, really stretching my traps, and then pulling my shoulders up and back, almost pinching my shoulder blades together as i go to the top of the shrug, in doing this my elbows invariably bend and the ass becomes a nonissue for me. just kinda describing this to see if thats how others do them… sure as hell feel it working when im done though

LOL at “hate.” Insert the author of your choice, his was just the first name that came to mind. Actually not, I first thought of Nick Tumminummial<—but didn’t know how to spell that.
Lighten up.

Dude, seriously. I am surprised that any grown man over 200lbs can do them behind the back. If your ass is too big, I guess mine deserves its own zip code and home owner’s association.
I’ve found that doing them with some forward lean in the smith, at least on my frame, lets the start position be at the very bottom of my lower back - I feel the exercise well and can use enough weight progression will be manageable.
Probably depends on body structure if that’s manageable.
x2, and I stand in a way so that in the bottom strech position the bar is closest to my body and as I shrug up the bar moves away from me (due to angle of the smith machine, this way the bar clears my ass as long as I am not standing too close to it).

I wasn’t all that serious when I wrote that! ![]()
OP, do you find it tough to find jeans that fit?
seriously, if you can’t do them behind, do them in front or with a trap bar
Dumbbells?

Ha! Well at least this confirms in my own mind that this is not unusual the more “mass” you accumulate.

That’s odd. I can’t do standard BB shrugs because my penis is too big.
It would be pretty tough to shrug dumbbells completely behind you back, no? I use em with my hands placed at my sides however.

May I offer you a flee collar and a razor?
i guess good old shrugs to the front have gone out of style.

Why do shrugs necessarily have to be behind the back?
^ umm… you didn’t really read my original post eh? I already do barbell shrugs in the front and dumbell shrugs from the side angle. I was looking to maximize the no. of angles I train traps and was looking for ideas.
That part didn’t jump out at me. Sorry
If you have the Hammer Strength shrug machine with the wide handles that people sometimes do deadlifts with by standing instead of sitting on the seat, you can stand facing away from it and do them that way. This works pretty well. Dunno if you train at home or what.
Also, if you have any of the selectorized, pin type benches at your gym with the wide handles you can stand over the bench facing away and do that, but the reps have to be high with the thing maxed out obviously.
