'Are You on Steroids?!'

First, let me preface what I’m going to say with the fact that even if you use steroids, you obviously still have to train hard and eat well. I know this, but I would say that the majority of people don’t, and look at it as if you pop a pill, and POW! you’re huge and ripped.

I used to get this a lot, but even moreso now that I’ve competed. When your bf% is so low, no one realizes just how small you truly are because you look so big. One of the “trainers” at my gym walked around my entire prep telling everyone that I was on gear. Not that I care if you are or not, but it was a damn disrespectful thing to do because it was an attempt to undercut my accomplishments, which is what really bothered me. Just this week a young kid asked me under his breath if I was on “The winny” because I had veins showing (and when he was on, he appeared more vascular). Again, as much as I shouldn’t let it bother me, I felt like it was undercutting my knowledge of nutrition and training simply because it implied that I couldn’t possibly be in that kind of shape without some assistance. Obviously if I was 260 lbs with veins running everywhere I too would think I was on something, but in my case,… well, it just shows how uninformed most people are.

I agree with this. My feeling, rightly or wrongly, is that most steroid comments are veiled accusations of cheating.

Which is why it surprises me that people are really taking this as a compliment. With steroids in the media the way they are, most of the time if anyone brings it up, they are NOT complimenting the way you look. They are saying you couldn’t have done that without drugs. Yes, that is a form of an insult when you are really big. They are not saying it like “congratulations on the hard work”.

Yes, I know when you are just getting started, ANY time someone notices your gains you get happy. For those of us who have lifted for several years and are used to standing out, we don’t get all giddy when people notice we lift. If anything, it is almost expected.
This. /thread

“Are you on steroids?” sucks…

I’m aiming for someone to ask me for an autograph…thats when you know you made it…

I’m not sure why you guys think its cooler to act like you’re annoyed with this question.

well consider when you say you arent.

then the other person keeps insisting you are and trys to name off multiple reasons as to why you are.

Well, considering how all the biggest guys at my gym are on steroids (yes, they speak about it openly - they don’t even try to hide it) and those at the summit of bodybuilding are on steroids it’s not ridiculous for people to assume if you body build you take steroids.

Seriously, who was the last relevant, to average Americans, bodybuilder to NOT be on steroids?

Some of you are pissed off many don’t know your hobby as well as you do. Considering how many here, on the bodybuilding forum, cannot name all previous Mr Olympias (without googling them) or even recognize some in pictures I don’t see why it’s a big deal that knowledge of the sport and its history are low.

Anyway, like others have said - you should take it as a compliment.
when did i ever say i was pissed off people didnt know bodybuilding? i dont care if people know about lifting just like i would hope people of other enthusiasms would not expect me to be detailed into what it is that they do.

my frustration is when people don’t shut the fuck up about things they dont know. and it’s not even whether you know about steroids but to assume i’m on them just because of some asinine reason and when i deny to keep pushing it. that isn’t complimenting someone, that’s being a fucking dickhead because youre trying to tease/insult the person.

you shouldnt assume certain habits of people just because of their body comp.

how about i tell every skinny person i see that i think theyre on heroin or have AIDS

and tell every fat person i see that they must have diabetes. and not even fat people, just kinda chubby ones. then when they deny i can say that it’s impossible for them to be telling the truth because i saw on a tv show once that most fat people have diabetes.

word, a compliment is “hey you look good” “hey you’ve gotten bigger” “nice muscles” something to that effect

it stops being a compliment when it’s followed up with anything about steroids or starts with anything about steroids.

it’s like going up to a thin girl and saying “wow, you have a great body there’s hardly any fat on you …do you throw up after meals?”

It’s no biggy really. To the uneducated even relatively small guys seem big i guess. My last girlfriend wouldn’t believe me when i told her “no im not, im tiny” but i guess that’s what happens when you live in a town where a good portion people use steriods from the getgo.

Every fucking day, pisses me the fuck off because they ask when I’m doing my daily cardio of running around and ripping stop signs out of the ground. Did I forget to mention that it’s hard to find pants for my massive thighs?

haha ^ and no its never happened to me, although i get compliments about my forearm size every now and then.

Yep, oh wait thats not what this thread is about.

What we should do in retaliation:

Skinny newbs : “Wow, you’re really thin!! Do you have cancer?”

Fat girls: “Wow, you’re really “plus sized”, do you eat when you’re sad and then cry yourself to sleep?..and then wake in the middle of the night for more cake?”

Fat guys: “Wow, that’s quite an amazing gut you have. Do you have diabetes and drink a case of beer a night?”

I do believe bodybuilding is the only activity where someone can run up to you, point out how you look openly, and then state that you clearly must have done ____ to look that way. Any person taking it beyond “you must lift weights” is being an asshole.

I feel like it’s a compliment if they ask you once and you respond with no then they let it go. I suppose it would piss me off if they kept pushing it, Live, but I always just say no, I’ve never even seen them in person and we start talking about something else. But I see your point, if they keep pushing it, it does seem like they are trying to discredit you or downplay your progress.

To me, X, it’s more desirable to be built than all those things you mentioned. Saying those things is like adding insult to injury more than a situation where someone asks you if you do steroids IMO. I’m sure the fat people aren’t proud of it (although another thread here pointed out that some are, I won’t get into that) maybe the skinny person. But at the very least, it requires more work to accomplish being built than it does to be fat or skinny so you really can’t compare it to that. I guess a better comparison would be “oh, you’re 21 and have your own Porsche, do you sell drugs or did you hit the lotto?”

I don’t get people…

Some people say I’m fat… when I did have a 6 pack (well I’m bulking now)…
Then at the gym, the EXACT same person asks me if I take roids…

This guy is a wimpy ass mofo, so, he can’t tell difference between Muscle and Fat… Pisses me off.

Some people call me roid rage  which I take as a compliment and enjoy denying hahaha

And, I don’t even compare to you guys, I’m only 15

I quoted you, but not everything was direct at you.

Sorry your feelings get hurt when people make assumptions about you based on your hobbies. But then again we all have preconceived notions about others based on their hobbies.

For example, how many here would assume successful rock band members have at least at one point used recreational drugs? Sure, some publicly admit to it, but others don’t.

What about D&D (role playing game) players? Chances are if I told you a friend of mine is a long time hardcore gamer you’d assume he was a nerd or geek… Hardly complimentary.

I can list end list hobbies with false assumptions we have about them. It just so happens that bodybuilding is associated with steroids.

This upsets you? You wish people would take the time to discover you’re a unique and beautiful snowflake? Get real. People have far more hurtful preconceived notions about more important shit like race and religion. People are too stubborn to take the time to learn about these things. People automatically assuming bodybuilders are on steroids, D&D players are geeks/virgins, and rockers smoking pot are well down the depth chart.

Secondly, there is a difference between those who assume you are on steroids but can be easily swayed and those who desperately want to ‘out you’. The first group doesn’t know much about bodybuilding and don’t really care about it. They assume your on steroids just because it seems normal for a bodybuilder to be on them. Can you blame them for thinking this? Again, when was the last time America was exposed to a successful bodybuilder who wasn’t on steroids? I’m serious. When? And then you wonder why they automatically assume this? Luckily these people can be persuaded otherwise if provided some useful information. For the most part they have no real opinion of the sport aside from tidbits of pro level bodybuilding.

Then there is the second group who are made of haters who are bitter. Bitter about being constantly lied to by bodybuilders and pro athletes who swear up and down they are clean only to be busted years or months later. They are sick of the lies, and lets be honest a moment. Go to any steroid subforum on bodybuilding sites and you’ll meet countless guys who lie to people about their usage in “real life”. Do you expect these average joes to ignore all these facts and not doubt anyone with a great build?

Heck, even the bigger, faster stronger steroid documentary has male models (nowhere near ifbb pro size) say that people are fools if they think they can develop a body like their without steroids!

It’s not as if these preconceived notions are coming from nowhere. Are you telling me you cannot see it from their point of view?

For most bodybuilding and steroids will forever be intertwined. Does it suck for those who have never used and had to bust their ass to get where they are? Yup. But that’s life.

Oh - and those who insist on outing you simply have poor manners. They suck for doing that. But I don’t blame them for thinking most are on steroids even if they are wrong. At my gym 15-20% of the regulars are on steroids. And many of them don’t even look that great…

Anyway, I realize what I’m saying is going to be incredibly unpopular - but like I said, bodybuilding hasn’t exactly had many (if any) clean representatives in how many decades?

I cant understand why it seems to be perfectly acceptable to ridicule bodybuilders, when if u did the same to a fat person, ud be mobbed by the whole PC crowd.

Not really talkin about roids now, but if a bodybuilder walked around with his top off, and someone said, “Your muscles look disgusting, you obviously take steroids and you’re a freak” its somehow acceptable, and noone would stand up for them.

If I went up to a moderately fat person and said “damn, your stomach is disgusting, you must sit at home eating pies all day, and take pain killers for the pain from just to walking with all that weight” Id be runnin for my life from a pack of angry PC nobs

One of my favorite responses is “Yeah, but they weren’t very good quality”

Lol shuts people up. I could care less if they thought I was on AAS.

Or I say “Not yet” even though I have no plans of cycling now or in the future.

On another note, what do you think the reaction from most would be if say we were on steroids and answered yes when asked.
horsepuss wrote:

Aside from saying, “they’re bad for your health” I doubt anyone would really give a shit.

People don’t even care to talk about the latest baseball players being outed. Like a lot of shit that gets in the news - it was done to death and now people don’t even want to hear about it.

Yeah, those are called “Haterz”. That is the main reason people bring up this topic in the first place…because admitting that really hard work and dedication built your body doesn’t make them feel as good as acting like the ONLY reason you look like that is because of roidz.

People want to feel relevant. Seeing someone that far removed from where they are makes them feel less than relevant (at least physically). It is a defense mechanism.

Yep. Everyone wants to find/make an excuse as to why you’ve achieved something they could not.
LiveFromThe781 wrote:
i wouldnt mind if i at least looked like i was on steroids.

dudes be comin up to me like, damn you got bigger since last time i saw you…are you on steroids?

somehow i went from getting asked if i was on steroids a lot to getting asked if i play football. only problem with the latter is that i dont know if theyre talking high school, college, pro or pop warner.
LMAO!

I have never had a “random stranger” ask me. If a random stranger, someone I knew I wouldn’t see again, did walk up and interrupt my business to ask I would say yes and fake a roid rage. When I first meet people it gets brought up sometimes. It’s aggeravating. Even more aggeravating is the people, in some cases teammates, who refuse to believe that you’re clean after you tell them dozens of times.
