Applied Nutrition?

Applied Nutrition is a class i must take in order to graduate in Exercise Science. When i saw the name i figured i might get to learn a lot about digestion, absorbtion and the such. What did we do on the first day? We learned how to read a fucking food label and calculate macronutrients. I was always wondering how to do that. The bad thing is those dumbasses in my class were totally confused. I was like are you kidding me. So obviously im bored in class so i start reading the book. I go straight to the protein section. Whats the first thing i notice? Eating more than the recommended amount for athletes makes you fat. Im glad they told me cause i should be getting fat anyday now from the 300+ grams i eat everyday. Then i go to the supplement section(which im told is very unneccessary). Did yall know ephedrine is dangerous and it has been implicated in some deaths and we shouldnt breath when we are in the same room with it? Nevermind that the total deaths are about 1% of the people who have died from aspirin or any other “wonder drug”. Then steroids are called supplements. Did you know if you use steroids you will lose testicular function forever? Somebody better tell Bill Roberts and Brock that shit. I dont think they got that memo. Next creatine may not work. They tell me that there have been many studies that show it work but results are often inconclusive.WTF? Then theres the fact that it may be damaging when used for long periods of time. Oh yea, dont buy whey protein because its found in milk. One cup has 1.5grams. So just drink a glass of milk. And my teacher is one of those bitches with the damn alphabet after her name. But all the letters in the world havent helped her from being a fat ass. And i do mean fat ass. Well i gotta go. I gotta analyze my food label for my class.

Goldberg I can empathize with you big man. I took that exact same class about 9 years ago and the books were saying about the same things then as they’re saying now.

What school do you go to? That class sounds a lot like a basic nutrition class I took here at University of Delaware last year. I felt the same exact way for the first 1/4 of the semester. “Are you kidding me” was my expression when we were learning the ‘difficult’ things such as calculating total calories in a meal. I guess they are all the same across the country. Basic nutrition is for the fat masses of our country who will still be just as fat even after they have taken the course. Oh well, I guess IM just glad I had someone do a really good job of venting for me in the t-mag forum.

I go to Columbus State University in Columbus, GA.

hehe…im doing a double degree in exercise science and human nutrition…i find both to be years behind what i learn off t-mag.

ps… more than 65g protein a day is a waste and will damage your kidneys

Goldberg, I took my Nutrition class at University of Hawaii, and it’s the same shit here too! (Probably the same publishers). I even challenged my professor about the protein issue, but she spit out this jumbled reply and in frustration said, ‘Well, we should get back to lecture’. Lesson learned is that you can’t believe everything that is spewed out in the mainstream, including science books!

You History majors out there correct me if I’m wrong…there is a principle that a lot of History (especailly if it is ancient), is a combination of ACCEPTED truth (something like that…)which is why Mel Gibson got so much flack over “Braveheart” and “The Patriot” and why “The Messanger: The Story of Joan of Arc” caused such an uproar. Both went beyond “accepted truth”. Well…NONE of this compares to nutrition…if you say something long enough…or if its part of FDA bureau-babble, then it becomes “truth”, without ANY basis. Again…that concept of “accepted truth”. (If I’m not mistaken, the high carb, low protein diet is still considered the “healthy” diet, is it not?) Just hang in there, guys…pass the test…and get out of those classes ASAP!

You hit ona couple things that are explained in a couple simple phrases: “there is a huge difference between truth and fact” and “history is written by those who won the war.”

Academia lives in it’s own reality. They live in a world where large amounts of protein makes you fat and steroids WILL cause liver damage, cancer, and impotence. What bothers me is that is the exact opposite of what science is supposed to be like.
