Nutritional Ignorance

It might be surge of testosterone or something, but it really pisses me off when I here stupid comments about nutrition…
Eg,…A guy training at my girlfreinds gym tell her that she doesnt need a high amount of protein, especially whilst dieting, because it turns to fat when not used. I have only made her take in 1g/lb which is probably lower than she really needs. So after discussion with this fool, she has decided to drop her mid morning protein shake…I said cool, give it a try.

This guy is 28, been training for a while. He is currently dieting…He takes in 1 cup of black coffee in the morning, 2 small cans of tuna for lunch, 2 small cans of tuna for dinner and he weight trains 6 days a week, followed by 45-1hr cardio after weights, then again after dinner…so thats 2 fucking meals a day, with all that training too!..he does have a cheat meal once a week, but thats it. Now I have not actually seen this guy, but my gf reckon he aint small, but she didnt say he was big(muscular) either…Having said that, no offence to her, but she aint the greatest judge anyway.

Eg2…My girlfreinds freind has studied nutrition and says that me taking in additional protein, other than say whats in lunch and dinner will make no difference and that it is enough. What the hell does she know about athletes requirements for proper nutrition. stupid grad. She worked for one yr with overweight ppl or something…damn, I am getting even more angry as I write this…

Anyway, just a rant about ignorance in and out of the iron game I guess. Thoughts?

Someone at a social gathering told me drinking too much water will give you diabetes. He said this will chugging a bottle of coke <_<

lol, that douche with the coffee and tuna is probably lean. So every ounce of muscle on him shows. Not that he probably has anything other than small chest and biceps.

I hate people who dont know what their talking about. I wish I could carry around one of those rubber base ball bats that you give kids. And every time someone talks out of their ass I could just beat them with it.

You can’t really be mad at those that take classes on this stuff. Sounds similar to me and my mom arguing about the amount of protein to take. She shows me this stuff in her school books and most of that shit in there contradicts the rules in bodybuilding so you’ll have to give them a break. Besides, I bet the studies in those books are based on “average people”, not athletes or anything of the sort. ^Please don’t hit my mom with a baseball bat. lol

They don’t realize that principals change for different activities. Her book also said that you don’t need all that protein to build muscle. True maybe? But their plateau point for gaining anymore muscle would come ALOT sooner that they think and they’d wonder why they lifted weights and was skinny all their lives.

Sure he may be lean, but he’ll get some seroius mercury poisoning with all that tuna everyday.

What’s a safe amount of tuna that a person can safely eat everyday or every other day without problems? I’m scared to even eat it because of murcury.

Don’t get mad. Just say “hey. If you want to listen to that guy, then go for it. He must know more than me about this right?”

it’s a shame though. it sounded like she was on a good thing. that guy she’s listening too sounds like a complete moron if that’s really what he’s doing.

There’s so much info about diet out there now, there’s no excuse for eating so few meals a day if getting lean is your goal.

What pisses me off more so, is the fact that people learn stuff at Uni and as soon as they get out…they are fucking preaching tabout what they learned and they know it all. I recently graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and know very well that I dont know shit yet. It is all about experience!!!

Certainly with her friend, studying nutrition…she has not an ounce of experience with an advanced athlete or bodybuilding with higher nutritional requirments. She worked with obese people in a hopital for a bit, then went back to university to study accounting. Oh well, guess we will all meet such people through our lives

Anytime you do something that isn’t “normal”, the people that fall into the category with criticize you. While drinking a protein shake, my overweight brother likes to tell me that protein shakes “aren’t very healthy”.

Wow, what facts do you base this opinion of yours on? I can’t tell you how many times people have said to me:“Eating so healthy can’t be good for you.” Would you take a second and just try to comprehend what you just said?

I gave up on people a long time ago. If they want to adopt this lifestyle, they can figure it out on their own just like I did.

Yeah, when I was doing human movement I quite often heard PHD’s and master students in physio, hum mov & nutrition making blanket statements about many things. Saying “No this is a lie or This will always be true”.

And yet, these are people with next to no real world experience, it’s purely academic.

I have helped more people lose weight than that nutritionist who told me that diabetes has no relation to diet, ever will.

Did you know why obese people are likely to have diabetes? Because they don’t exercise. Apparently there’s no ‘evidence’ to show that diet is related.

I just had to shake my head in disbelief.

Yet many more will listen to her than to me. Because she has a masters and is in the PHD program.

That’s the way it goes man. The only people I can really help, are my clients.

The rest can just wonder at our results for all I care.

it works in practice but does it work in theory.

#1 reason why I didn’t do nutrition as a minor right now.

I just don’t get it.

There are lots of things that are being taught to nutrition undergrads that have no merit in the current world of real athletic nutrition.

I suppose the same could be said for many other degrees.

Things become obsolete pretty quickly these days.

As far as the doucher in the gym, just get bigger than him and she’ll figure out who to listen to.

Very true re info becoming obsolete with newere findings…And good plan, I will simply getting leaner and more muscular. Currently dieting, shooting for single figure bf%

You don’t know much about women if you think she’ll care who’s bigger.

I would say you need to get bigger AND more cut before she’ll start paying attention.

Most women want definition first, and then they’ll think about trying to add size. But you have to say shape. if you say size they’ll run a mile.

this is true 96% of the time.

Just as most “gym moron” threads contain people who, to me, seem more like mythical creatures than actual human beings, this thread, too, is full of shit I have never come across in my daily travels.

The worst I have heard (in my nutrition class) was my professor saying that meal replacement shakes aren’t the best thing for you. Other than that, most things I’ve come across at my school seems pretty in line with what you can read on this site.

Hell, other than my mother’s personal trainer who has her on the BOSU craze, I don’t think I’ve come across many idiots in my day.

There is usually a little truth to most things. The problem with book learning is there is no application.

Excess protein like excess any food can be stored as body fat, it’s a survival trait the body has to protect it’s self. Eat lots of fiber and crap out the excess. Like pro swimmers, they develop a dense layer of fat to protect themselves from the constant cold temperature of the water. Protein is the building blocks for muscle, it’s like one plus one equals two.

Eating more than two servings of deep sea fish will come back to haunt you.
One of the biggest problems I have encountered with the book worms is that they want to put everyone in the some hole. I just tell them to F’ off.

It’s like when people at the gym ask me how I got so ripped. I tell them the truth, I work my ass off, this is not what they want to hear. They all think there’s some secret short cut and will keep asking people until someone tells them what they want to hear. Dumb is dumb and there’s nothing we can do about it
