I searched, I swear I did - and it answered most of my questions.
I recently finalized the home gym, and realized I need a rack - I no longer train in a trio, so things like benching got a bit more dangerous with my current no-spot setup. Its a 4 foot wide by 3 foot deep bench rack, adjustable - and was fine when I had friends to lift with.
In short, I’m looking at the (famous around these parts) Powerline Power Rack:
No, I’m not buying it at that price or from that store but they had a decent resizable picture. I know someone in here has this thing, or 50 of you.
Now, its a 2x2 rack. Thats 4 sq feet, or one of my floor tiles. That seems cramped, but logically its enough for all of my movements - except one.
What this tells me is my hands can’t go wider than 24" apart, otherwise they’ll be outside of the cage and thus outside of the J-hooks, so grabbing and racking/unracking the bar would be hella awkward. 24" is plenty of distance for everything except my bench - unless I’m understanding this wrong. Is it possible to bench in one of these cages? I could’ve sworn I saw Thibs doing it in a video once - but maybe his cage was 3x3? Am I misinterpreting this, or is a 2x2 cage really as small as I have in my head?
No, no, no. It’s 2" square tube steel. The distance between the uprights is 42". Front-to-back it’s 24" between the uprights.
This is probably the absolute best home gym purchase you will ever make. I have the TDS model that’s almost identical, and I can’t imagine training without it. Not just from a safety standpoint, either. There are a lot of movements that are almost impossible to duplicate without a power rack.
An extra pair of hooks will make things a lot more convenient, as will an extra pair of pins.

2 x 2 is the size of the steel tubing ( 2 inches by 2 inches square) , not the size of the squatting space. LOL
Its got a standard working space- probably 25 or 27 inches deep, and standard width.
2 x 2 cages need to be bolted to the floor or a platform since they are light and will tip over. Thats really the biggest drawback and the only thing that may be aggrevating.
Thank you both for clarifying that - I was going batshit crazy with those numbers on badly written websites. Bolting it down won’t be an issue, I can run it straight through my rubber mats into the concrete below - thanks for the safety tip, MODOK. My question for JP is instead of dropping 70 bucks on a second set of safety pins, would it be irresponsible to get high-gauge steel pipe in the diameter of the cage holes and just use that as an auxiliary pin set?
You can use pipe, but you run into a snag. The 3/4" pipe won’t fit through the holes, and the 1/2" pipe is kinda flimsy. If you could find some really thick-walled 1/2" and shove a piece of 1/2" rebar through the center, that would probably work.
I have some 1/2" that I use for lighter loads, just to save my good pins some wear and tear. I wouldn’t go much over 350 with them, though.
EFS is having a 10% sale on all racks and benches till Monday 11am. They are very pricey but great quality with useful attachments if you use bands. I placed an order today and should have it in 2 to 4 weeks, good luck.

The first place I looked was EFS actually, and I loved everything I saw. The issue is I’m a currently-broke 18 year old college student because I just blew a ludicrous amount of money on the gym I have now (mats are expensive, as well as all the specialty bars).
In the future, EFS all the way. For now, its overkill.
And JP - thats a genius idea man… I like the way you think.
Tubing and piping are sized differently, pipes are measured by the inside, and tubes, the outside. If you go to Home Depot or a store like that, you will only find piping. This is made of cheap metal that isn’t meant to hold a load, and it will be hard to match to the inside of a hole, like JP said.
There are like 3 or 4 types of tubing, it doesn’t really matter what you get, just go to a stock metal dealer/supplier, and get the right outer diameter, and then get it as thick as they have. this will fit better, be made of solid structural metal, and could even be more sturdy than the regular pins depending on the thickness and tubing type.
Its a half inch taller (maybe just more precise measurements) but I can get it locally (guy selling on craigslist YESS) for somewhere very close to 299. From what I’ve seen of the rack, its comparable to the powerline if not superior. Anyone familiar with it?

Hey if you decide against it, can you PM me the craigslist link? I’m in NJ and looking for a bench with safety bars or a power rack that I can drive to and pickup. I noticed people on CL sell weights for more than the fuckin stores do.

Where in NJ are you? Also, I saw a deal on some really nice new looking oly plates - 375lb for $180 with some curl bars and stuff tossed in. Just gotta comb well

That’s the one I have. Very happy with it. 299 seems high, though. Got mine for 200 with some extras thrown in (dip bars, plate holders, extra weights).

I’m in Northern NJ. Near Paterson area. 375 is not that bad at all. Better than what most douchebags are selling.

I’m putting together a home gym and was actually looking on Craigs list too and also noticed lots of good deals.
Just keep searching it every few days because new stuff pops up on there all the time, but what I noticed is it seems most of the better deals are south and central Jersey.
Im from Newark/Elizabeth area and don’t mind driving an hour to pick up a good deal.
OP, do you know the wieght capacity of that rack? I was thinking of getting it if I don’t find something on Craigs list.

Oh wow, I’m in East Paterson - I just talked to the guy from CL last night, he agreed to sell me the rack. He’s in West Paterson, so a quick 10m drive sometime this weekend.
To the guy asking about the capacity, I have no clue but guys on Amazon had this to say:
“This rack provides much security when lifting heavy. I have no doubt that if I fail on a lift, those solid 1” steel safety bars will take the weight. I have not been able to find a rating on this rack, but I would be surprised if it couldn’t handle 800-1000 pounds."

Powerrack bought, transported, and installed.
Loaded a couple plates on each side, quickly did a rack pull, and dropped it.
Nothing happened.
Thanks for the input everyone, I’ll bump my home gym thread with finalized pictures eventually.
Good shit. I’m still on the hunt. Hopefully I can find a decent deal too.
The company I work for sells the powerline power rack. FYI our price is $379 + $50 drop ship fee. It’s a very popular rack. Let me know what kind of deal you find.

Amazon.com is shipping that rack for free at $321 (no tax):
If I can’t find one on Craigslist I’ll probably get it from there.
