And God said

Okay, the point of my post is not to get spiritual, though the basis for my logic is biblical. Here goes. The book of Genesis states that God created everything by speaking it into existence. We are created in the image of God. It’s also stated elsewhere in the Bible (I don’t recall the exact location) to “state that which is not as if it were”. So we have some of this creative power through speaking. I think this is a principal that’s in the book Psycho-cybernetics. Here’s the point of all this: Recently I’ve been doing some very powerful “affirmation statements” that have been helping my lifts go up significantly. I’m not talking about 100% increases or anything like that, but I’m wondering if any one else out there has tried this, and if they’ve found similar results. Any one?

You have a good point, but I think you are getting a little mixed up. God is very different than we are. He has the power to create - speak things into existence. While we were created in His image in that we have a soul and decision making abilities, we do not have the abilities He has to create life, etc.
However, I do believe in positive thinking. In any area of life, having a positive outlook can help. For example, I know if I go into the weight room with a bad attitude and think that I probably won’t have a good workout or be able to lift very much, then that will be the outcome. However, if I have a positive, realistic outlook, tell myself that I can do it, and get pumped up about my workout, then I will have a great workout. Maybe you do this by telling yourself that you are going to have a great workout. I think it’s a great idea. Keep it up!

Right, I’m not talking about bringing “things” into existence. I’m not trying to border on blasphemy either. I do, however, believe in the power of the spoken word, as it applies to the subconscious mind. Spoken word brings about belief, which the subconscious uses to bring about physical changes which translate into abilities and opportunities. When the Word said “say to this mountain ‘be removed from here’ and it shall be done”, it said nothing about it not taking some elbow grease to bring about the actual event. But the faith and the statement brings about the ability to make it happen.

I have been doing this for many years and found that it does work. I don’t know how but through the years things always change for the better when I speak " life" over them. I think it may have to do with convincing yourself that it will happen and then actually following up on it.I don’t think it is anything mystical. even in bussiness meetings they say to talk this to yourself.

I believe this is Mark 11:23 - “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith” - Matt

Never underestimate the power of the spoken word, nor the importance of visualization. Repetition can be a form of self-hypnosis, discipline, and and stengthening your ability to focus. If you find a phrase or image that works for you, use it. And if you’re having a bad day and don’t want it to affect your workout, a few deep breaths and repetition of your mantra will make you an unstoppable force.

I agree with you. Now that I think about, I often talk to myself under my breath to convince myself that I can do one more squat, run further, make the next shot, etc. I am sure if anyone in the gym was walking by me at that time, they would think I was a little weird. Anyways, I am also going to try to say my goals out loud and see how that works. (By the way, there are other verses in the Bible that talk about saying things out loud - see Romans 10:9-10.)

Coach Davies asked me to add this as he is having trouble responding to the forum today!
